Words of Advice from Harry Potter

The Series That Started a Phenomenon

The Harry Potter series is perhaps the most popular grouping of books in the world. While the books may have been written for children there is certainly nothing childish about them. Having read them as a child and then again as an adult I can honestly say that I found a deeper meaning behind the entire series. As a child I found the story magical, the characters easy to relate to, and full of advice. As an adult I realized that this book was more than just a battle between good and evil. There are themes of racism, death, and overcoming all obstacles. Rowling has even stated that she believes that moral significance of her work to be obvious and that she had no intention of hiding anything in subtext.

Each character in the series has had some words of wisdom to pass on. As including ever profound quote would most likely result in a completely new book, I have just complied a list of the ones that had great meaning to me in one way or another.

Book Two: The Chamber of Secrets

"Never trust anything that can think for itself if you cannot see where it keeps its brain."

"Hearing voices no one else can hear isn't a good sign; even in the wizarding world."

"When in doubt, go to the library."

"It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."

"Fame is a fickle friend. Celebrity is as celebrity does."

Book One: The Sorcerer's Stone

"It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live"

"It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends."

"Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself."

"The trouble is, humans do have a knack of choosing precisely those things that are worst for them."

"Books and cleverness! There are more important things- friendship and bravery."

"There is no good and evil, there is only power, and those too weak to seek it."

Book Three: The Prisoner of Azkaban

"I solemnly swear that I am up to no good."

"I don't go looking for trouble. Trouble usually finds me."

"Mischief managed."

"What you fear most of all is fear. Very Wise."

"You think the dead we loved ever truly leave us?"

"You sometimes have to join forces with those you'd rather avoid."

"I want to commit the murder I was imprisoned for."

"Then you should have died! Died rather than betray your friends, as we would have done for you!"

"Don't let the muggles get you down."

Book Four: The Goblet of Fire

"It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be."

"If you want to know what a man is like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals."

Numbing the pain for a while will make it worse when you finally feel it."

"Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are the same and our hearts are open."

"Time will not slow down when something unpleasant lies ahead."

"Curiosity is not a sin. But, we should exercise caution with our curiosity."

"Play to your strengths."

"There are those who'll turn innocent occasions to their advantage."

Book Five: The Order of the Phoenix

"Wit beyond measure is a man's greatest treasure."

"Indifference and neglect often do more damage than outright dislike."

"Things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end, if not always in the way we expect."

"We can't choose our fate, but we can choose others. Be careful in knowing that."

"Some wounds run too deep for healing."

"Anything is possible if you have enough nerve."

"The face that you can feel pain is your greatest strength."

"It's best to know what the enemy is saying."

"Authority figures always attract trouble."

"Nothing like a nightmare to give you all sorts of ideas."

Quotes from J. K. Rowling Herself

"Jane Austen is the pinnacle for which all authors aspire."

"It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might have well not live at all, in which case you have failed by default."

"Books are like mirrors- if a fool looks in, you cannot expect a genius to look out."

"If 'fat' really the worse thing a human being can be? Is 'fat' worse that 'vindictive', 'jealous', 'shallow', 'vain', 'boring', or 'cruel'? Not to me."

"There's always room for a story that can transport people to another place."

"The best of us must sometimes eat our words."

"The only way out is through."

"If you don't like to read, you haven't found the right book."

"No story lives unless someone wants to listen."

Book Six: The Half-Blood Prince

"It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and darkness, nothing more."

"Accidentally rudeness occurs alarmingly often."

"When you have seen as much of life as I have, you will not underestimate the power of obsessive love."

"Killing is not so easy as the innocent believe."

"We must try not to sink beneath our anguish, but battle on."

"Age is foolish and forgetful when it underestimates youth."

"Time is making fools of us again."

"It is impossible to manufacture of imitate love."

"There are much more terrible things than physical injury."

"The trouble is, the other side can do magic too."

"Have you any idea how much tyrants fear the people they oppress?"

Book Seven: The Deathly Hallows

"Do not pity the dead, pity the living, and above all those who live without love."

"Every human life is worth the same, and worth saving."

"All is well."

"It was not, after all, so easy to die."

"Power was my weakness and my temptation."

"Contemplating the task ahead would not make it any easier, or the water any warmer."

"And then he treated death as an old friend, and went with him gladly, and equals, they departed this life."

"Parents shouldn't leave their kids- unless they've got to."

"I have seen your heart, and it is mine."

"You are the true master os death, because the true master does not seek to run away from death."

Understanding was coming so fast, it seemed to bypass thought."

In The End

The seven books that make up the Harry Potter series have so many life lessons buried within their pages. Each character grows throughout the books and they pass along what they have learned to the reader. Yes, the books can be dark at times and death with depressing topics but that is life. If you have never read the books you should give them a try, especially if you have seen the movies. It has been said many times before, but as it is true I will say it again: the books have more to offer than the movies.

I hope that everyone can experience the same joy in a book that I have in the Harry Potter series. If not in this book, then in a another.

The quote "We can't choose our fate, but we can choose others. Be careful in knowing that." never appears in the text.

I reread the series every now and then and I always find something else that speaks to me. I just love the world that J. K. Rowling created, and I feel like I have grown up with the characters. Professor Dumbledore is one of my all time favorite characters.

These books remain my go-to source for words of comfort, wisdom and magic. I've read them more times than I can remember. I love that you've collected all these great and powerful quotes and recognize quite a few of them as belonging to Professor Dumbledore. He is one wise wizard.
