Word Prompts Help Creativity / Week 19

I am a writer. My passion is poetry. I feel words connect people together and help us to understand the feelings we share.

Article Summary

Word Prompts Help Creativity / Week 19 is an article I write each week hoping to inspire our creativity.

I choose a single word prompt encouaging others to write a poem, a short story, a song or any combination.

The only requirement is to relax and have fun while writing.

"Billy Collins on How To Write Poetry - by NPR"

Introduction

My muse has been on vacation for much of this week.

I've only gotten the bare minimum finished. Only the absolute projects I had to do.

I apologize for not jumping on here reading and commenting on everyone's work, but I just didn't have it in me.

Sometimes my mind gets too cluttered to snap out of it and this was one of those weeks.

I can only hope this week will be better.

Inspiration

Billy Collins tells us in his video that if a poem isn’t working, we should stop writing it.

Don’t force it into life.

When I’m writing I usually can tell if my idea is good.

I’m not sure how to explain it , but it’s a feeling that overcomes me.

My attention spikes until I’ve written the first draft.

I might write a line or two, or a couple of stanzas then set it down for a few minutes to grab a bite to eat.

But while I’m eating, a thought pops into my head either about the next part or a way to rephrase what I've already written.

It constantly nags at my brain until I have it completely done.

Then it gets put away for the night and I go to sleep.

In the morning, I read it again. Then I usually change a word or two to make it tighter.

As for the ideas that fizzle out, I keep them.

I hope one day to revisit them and watch my muse come to life creating a precious gem.

Word Prompt = Mirror

For this week's word prompt the word I have chosen is a bit different.

The Word Prompt is "Mirror."

A mirror is a polished or smooth surface (as of glass) that forms images by reflection according to the definition in Merriam-Webster.

When you hear this word you might think of seeing your reflection in the mirror.

Or you might remember that superstition about breaking a mirror and getting 7 years bad luck.

Maybe your mind remembers a favorite tune. I know mine has, but I can't recall the name of it to share it with you.

Or when you look in the mirror you see grey hairs & you wonder when you became old.

Maybe you see a reflection of your strength. Always reminding yourself to have courage and not give up.

This word prompt is different and might be a challenge.

Maybe we'll create a humorous viewpoint or reflect on a mirror in a more serious way.

We'll see what direction our muse takes us.

I'm really not certain what this prompt might inspire.

But let's pick up our pens & jot down a few lines. Maybe we'll surprise ourselves.

Have fun writing!

Life is a mirror and will reflect back to the thinker what he thinks into it.

— Ernest Holmes

Highlights This Week

Each week the submissions to this word prompt are excellent!

It truly is difficult to choose a favorite one.

Keep up the great work! I love being wowed by your awesome writing.

Misbah shares an inspiring message.

In her poem, "Silence A Message to Convey" she tells us silence doesn't show weakness or a means to avoid arguments.

It shows respect.

She tells us that to the Eastern culture silence is an ~

"active way of searching within, of better understanding oneself."

In America we seldom do this one.

Take a moment to read her work. The link is below.

Ravi Rajan has written us several unique Haikus on silence. They are magnificent.

My favorite one is The Silence of Confusion.

Which one is yours?

If you haven't read his work, the link is below.

Vidya D Sagar reminds us that when negativity takes over our thoughts, we need to take time to meditate in silence. We should ask for help from the divine.

Take a moment to read Vidya's work by following the link below.

In my piece, I show both the negative and positive sides of silence. It can devaste our world or bring us answers.

Silence can soothe our soul if we embrace it.

I've placed a link below if you would like to read it.

John Hansen's Muse Strikes Again

John's response to this word prompt is Superb! Not to mention witty.

It flows perfectly & paints a picture in our minds.

He shows us how we get used to all the chaos & the noise around us.

Then when those quiet moments of silence strike out if nowhere, we don't know how to handle them.

In his cute, witty manner he tells us how silence is lurking in the background screaming.

That it actually has a sound. It howls & bellows like a bear that's just woke up from his long nap and if all the noises ceased we'd hear the sound of silence.

It's not tranquility after all for the silence overwhelms you making it feel like it's ripping off your arms.

Just listening to it echo through the halls is enough to hear the deathly spirit call.

The ending of his poem tells us not to speak, for the silence in our head is a curse with which we are blessed.

John ends his piece with a bit of information on Tinnitus, which is the perception of sound when no other external sound is present.

It clearly shows a different aspect of the sound of silence for those who suffer from it.

This is a wonderful response that I'm certain you will all enjoy.

Take a moment to read his work. The link is below.

Pamela Oglesby Takes Us On A Peaceful Journey

Pamela Oglesby's writing never disappoints us.

It's hard to believe she didn't acknowledge herself as a poet before starting these word prompts.

In this week's response she takes walk through the forest with her delightful words.

Her acrostic poem paints the perfect picture of sitting quietly watching the birds, the squirrels, and the clouds as one enjoys nature.

The words in her poem "Forest - Silence" flow so peacefully.

She shows us how worries fade away as we take a walk in the forest embracing the peacefulness of the quiet trees.

Continuing on the journey listening & watching nature, like the birds, squirrels, the sound of buzzing bees and the sun glistening through the trees.

Taking a moment to sit and breathe in the fresh air. Observing the wild flowers as she wonders what the squirrel sees.

Feeling the presence of God as she takes the time to pray.

As she enjoys silence and the beauty of nature she really hates to leave.

This is a fantastic poem which everyone should take a moment to read. It's absolutely beautiful!

The link to her piece is below.

Read everyone's work.

I missed a few people this week, like Misbah, Ravi Rajan & Alyssa.

I know Misbah is suffering from Covid and we all want her to rest up and come back when she feels up to it.

Alyssa usually graces us with a unique piece later on and it's worth the wait.

But Ravi I haven't heard from at all.

Does anyone know if he's doing okay?

These are both awesome poems.

I love the second one the best.

If you go to the author's view you can post a comment on the one on Letterpile and it will go back on the news feed.

The other one you would have to post on forum under community.

I will share the links for you & try to get them on the word prompt article.

I usually post my comments beneath your article, but for now I will post them here.

Vanita

In your poem, "Mirror"

You tell us that we shouldn't blame the mirror for the refection we see.

It is us who needs to change the manners in which we live our life.

It won't let me vote on a star though??

Vanita,

In your poem, "The Mirror" you tell a story about being given a mirror.

You loved the beautiful reflection until you came across an imperfection.

Like an ugly curve & what seemed to be dust. It was the first of many.

You try to remove the damaged part but you end up scratching the mirror and it didn't dissapear.

It's beautiful reflection is now marred.

You don't want to give up or lose it.

You hold it yoo tightly and then it breaks.

You are left alone with the broken pieces as your tears flow.

This is an awesome poem.

It tells how we fall in love with someone and want that love to last.

We see the relationship as a thing of beauty we want to hold.

But when we see a side of the person we don't like we try to change them.

We hold on so tight for we fear losing the one we love, that we end up breaking the relationship into pieces.

It shatters and you are left with a broken heart.

The response to your prompt last week had so many good results. I am so glad you enjoyed my contribution as I really enjoy writing poetry. I don't know why I waited so long to begin as I have always loved poetry.

I have read "Paradise Lost" and Wordsworth. I don't know if I spent 10,000 hours reading poetry as Billy Collins suggests.

This is a good article, Brenda. It gives us the many responses to your last prompt. You have opened a door to creativity for so many of us. I appreciate your efforts and your work. I know it keeps you busy.

Thank you so much for your prompts and your comments, my precious friend. I am looking forward to the responses to 'mirror'.
