When Me? If Not? Why Me?

Kenneth Avery is a Southern humorist with well over a thousand fans. The charm and wit in his writing span a nearly a decade.

. dad, just my mom, I get hungry.

. dad, just my mom, I get hungry.

I just asked for a crumb, not that I am not that dumb
I just asked for a bite to eat, I'm not begging you see
Just feed my little stomach, for it is very numb
When me? If not? Why me?

There's never been a contented day in my eyes
Just dirty groans from cold soup.
I just gave up, hoped to starve and see if I dies.
When me? If not? Why me?

Mama brought me meat and cried in the serving
I thought I was hungry until the moment when she cried.
No, your slim, dim son, mama, is not deserving.
When me? If not? Why me?

I couldn't eat one bite of the best she had
I wouldn't dare hurt her even more.
That would make her feel so bad.
When me? If not? Why me?

Just mama and me, no daddy to be found, not one
Staring into a empty plate that once had hot soup.
I'll breathe today and crawl away in the July sun.
When me? If not? Why me?

Face into face my one bite drops to my plate
Taking hope from my hour, no debate.
I'll walk the shade, tap the water, can't be late.
When me? If not? Why me?

My life, young, dark, a blur indeed
No one points my way to walk.
It would be best, if I were just a seed.
But no. I'm flesh. I can talk.
When me? If not? Why me?

Nothing noble or good about starvation.

Nothing noble or good about starvation.

Makes one think. When me? If not why me?

We never know what will happen, I guess we just keep trying and not disappointing others.

I often wonder about why me? when things do not come together as planned and other times What if it was me? So I am posting and writing as much as I can and joining in the challenges given by Vocal and hoping that someday it will be Yes, me! and I will be the top poster or winner of a prize.I saw your thought about staying on or leaving HubPages for me it is just nostalgia because I joined at a time when I did not think I could ever make any money online but then suddenly I gained so many online friends and it became home. However, with my poetry, I really have not made a cent just stayed because it was a place I had learned to like. Now I am all over the internet and I wonder if perhaps it is time to move one but somehow I still linger.I am leaving the decision for the future right now and concentrating more on actual money-making writing deals. You might enjoy reading an article I wrote on Vocal Media about my adopted cat Sid, I miss him a lot but I know he is content and happy to be with his Papa up in heaven.

What a fun, thought-provoking poem. I enjoyed both the content and wordplay. Thanks for sharing
