Tired And Yet You Can't Sleep

By No Means Of My Own

I was in a world different than one I have ever known

My eyes closed and my body still

Fast asleep I couldn't be happier

Little by little my cat Charlotte put an end to that

She began to poke and prod me

I find it funny because it is people that prod animals

Not the other way around

Yet the more I try to sleep

The less it becomes possible

So as I lay there helpless

Our Charlotte becomes more and more persistent

After a few waves of my arm

In an attempt to pat her

She is pleased for a few seconds

She has bigger aspirations

So she is not satisfied for long

She gives me a few blows of her paw

Then out come the claws

As she moves back and forth up along my side of the bed

She tucks her head under my hand

Scroll to Continue

I begin to pat

When I stop

She jabs at me like a fighter

Careless and unprotected

My left my side vunerable and exposed

She reminds me in a flash

That I am weak and still in shock

Hey, stop that

As I pat her once again

Trying to give her what she wants

As soon as I stop

She hits me with my guard down

Just as quick as before

I suddenly jump up

O.k. o.k.

I am awake

I roll out of bed reluctantly

As each foot hits the soft carpet

It gives me a false sense of security

Unstable on my feet

I slowly move forward

A little top-heavy

Like a drinker who had one too many

Charlotte cuts in and out of my feet

Reminding me I am here daddy

I walk out into the kitchen

Now I have reached the linoleum floor

Firmer under my feet

I am able to keep a better balance

I notice her food dish is empty

So as I pour her food

It clanks loud against her metal cat bowl

Like a slot machine paying off at the casino

Rattle, rattle, rattle

Then I pull up the container

Not to pour too much

A small win

Not the jackpot

As I put it back on the shelf

Where it had it's own spot

Our cat Charlotte is not amused

She does not even head near the dish

She snubs her nose up in the air

Saying you made me wait

I am going to make you wait

I look around the house in darkness

As I head back to bed

Charlotte cuts me off at the pass

Like an Indian that will not let me go any farther

Unless I meet her demands

To remind me I have not forgotten

And you still have a price to pay

I pause for a second or maybe two

I know she is not going to let me sleep

I can't think

So I head back into the kitchen

I sit down at our laptop

Now responding to comment three days overdue

Brought me back to a time when I was a young boy

No different than returning a late library book

Now I have to look up to an elderly woman

Five times my age

And ask for forgiveness

She won't buy my sob story

You owe me fifteen cents

That's a nickel a day

She wasn't going to budge

I was caught in a crossfire

There is no way out

I remember it well

So at my weakest moment

You win

I gave in

I tumbled faster than a crumble cake

Just out of the oven

As I foggily

Desperately fumble around with my fingers on the keyboard

Trying to bring my next thought into focus

Here I am two hours later

The sun is up and my cat Charlotte

Sound asleep

There is no justice

Chrish Canosa I love animals and I was so pleased to have the opportunity to love Daryl. I am proud to have his picture on my profile because it reminds me of him and I can often think back to the good times. Charlotte has her own spirit that keeps me puzzled and somewhat confused. She is all lovey-dovey then she is on her own and can't be bothered with us. I love telling stories about both. They are my family. I am glad you enjoy my poems. I will try to keep you interested and excited with more stories. Thank you for reading and taking the time to comment. Happy Sunday.

Oh I see , I'm sorry to hear about Daryl. Their names are so cute!

I look forward to see charlotte in one of your articles in the future!!!

Great weekend to you all out there :-)

Chrish Canosa Charlotte is off sleeping. She loves us then leaves us. Daryl was in the picture is another cat we had before Charlotte. They both where together for a little bit. Thank you for sharing. Keep on writing.

Chrish Canosa In my profile it was our beautiful cat named Daryl. When he became sick we thought it was time to look for another cat. We got Charlotte as a kitten and Daryl took her under his wing and taught her everything. He passed away a year later.Daryl lived to be 17. Every cat has its own unique personality. Thank you for reading and caring. Have a super night.

Yes I LOVE that feeling

When you know someone is always waiting at the door to greet you it's priceless!!! Is that charlotte on the profile ?

Chrish Canosa Our cat is our baby. She teaches us simple love. She waits when we come home and greets us at the door. There are times she likes to be left alone. Then other times she wants to be the center of attention. She definitely keeps us wondering what she will do next. She never really speaks. A quiet meow from week to week. We must have the only cat who doesn't know how to talk. Thank you for all your nice comments. Have a fine night.

Wow charlotte is a spoiled little one

Haha , id love to have cat but probably my dogs won't like the idea. And mom as well

Charlotte is so blessed to have a daddy and mommy like you, and so as you two. They are an angel in disguise

Have an awesome day :-)

Brenda Arledge My wife and I have no children so our Miss Charlotte keeps us busy and filled with many different surprises. I try to post as many hubs about her and my wife because they make up ninety percent of my thoughts.Thank you for reading and helping me with Hubpages. I hope we both may continue to write and share many more stories in the future. My Charlotte is asleep and I don't dare to wake her. Sometimes I think they both want to drive me crazy. (lol) Have a lovely night.

Dream in,

Ha Ha... didn't you know that Cat's rule the house?

Kitty cats have a mind of their own.

I love it when my kityy comes into the bed waking me up...or cuddling as I fall asleep.

They can be quite demanding.

They have their mind made up. They even pout like little kids if they don't get their way.

Great write.

Lee A Barton On a busy day they seem to make us smile when we forgot how to. On a quiet day, they give us the excitement we need sometimes too much. They have a mind of their own and yet love to be together when the time is right for them. (lol) Sometimes they catch us off guard and keep us on our toes. Our cat Charlotte is full of so much love and yet she gets wild and crazy. I wonder what she is thinking? If she could only talk. Thank you for reading and sharing. I hope you have a wonderful Tuesday.

John Hansen I thought we were in control. Sometimes it feels like they have us wrapped around their little paws. Either way, I love our pets so much. They never cease to amaze and amuse me at the same time. Thank you so much for commenting and please send a big hello to all your furry friends.

John Hansen from Gondwana Land on August 16, 2020:

OhI can so relate to this, Dream On. My own cats do the same. They do all they can to try to get your attention, especially if they want food or just to have you all to themselves. I am always stumbling out of bed half asleep to attend to their commands. Nice write, thanks for sharing.

Lee A Barton from New Mexico on August 16, 2020:

Been there! Really love the ending!
