Many of us have a habit of fooling ourselves, saying, " I wish I could do it , but I am too busy." The truth is - Time is an excuse. If you want to do it , you will always find the time or make time. If it is important you will even cut out the favourite movie or you will surely get up early in the morning- you will not worry about these dark circles under your eyes , if you desperately want it to be done. You will do it. That's exactly what is Ikigai.
Ikigai means the reason to live. Having an Ikigai means you have a purpose , a goal to achieve what you want.
The book IKIGAI: The Japanese Secret To a Long and Happy Life by Héctor García and Francesc Miralles, will give you life- changing tools to uncover your Ikigai, it is a case study of the long-living residents from Ogimi, a small village in Okinawa.


The book concludes with 10 rules of ikigai that the author explains from the wisdom of these long-living residents. Following these rules as the lifestyle habits enabled the senior residents of Ogami to live long and enjoy their ikigai.


The fact is that our lifestyle will be very different from the residents of Ogami. Most of us are living in a city, have many responsibilities, financial stress, relationship problems and many things to accomplish, and so on. Life is full of challenges, and it's hard to follow these 10 rules.


Keep in mind these aren’t rules that you must follow in order to achieve ikigai, but some tips or habits you could adopt to improve your health and well being so you can discover and live your ikigai.


When you are out of your comfort zone, you will try to exercise your creative muscles, achieve your potential, and try to reach unimaginable heights growing financially, professionally, and personally. You will notice a drastic change both in your life as well as in your relationship with others.


You must be wondering ” What rules can I easily implement that will help me with my day to day life?”
1. Be active - Those who give up in life are those people who fall into depression. Staying active means learning a new art, bringing beauty to your home and surrounding, helping those in need, shaping the world, the author says we must be active even after our professional life has come to end .


2. Do slowly – work slowly towards your goal and you will reach your destination, nobody can stop you or there is absolutely no need to hurry to reach there. Everyone of us have limitations, when we leave urgency behind, life and time will take us to a new direction.


3. Controlling one’s diet- This is perhaps the most important point, I must say. According to the authors of this book I read, we should only eat 80% in order to stay healthier and longer. Being healthy and fit works wonders. Controlling one’s diet is an important aspect for a healthy lifestyle.

4. Find good friends - It's not easy to find a good friend these days. But a friend whom you can trust, who really cares for you, should never be forgotten. Having few friends is better than having too many of them. A good chat, sharing stories that brighten your day , getting advice , and having fun is the secret to long life.


5. Get in shape - As we all know,' health is wealth' , life is all about maintaining health and keeping our body fit. No matter how old we are, a healthy body will make you feel young and confident.


6. Smile - one of the hardest things to do, but remember a smile does wonders and will make your life happier . The more you have a cheerful attitude, the more you will have the chance to make more friends.


7. Connect with nature - We humans are a part of nature, and the more you spend time with nature, the longer you will live. Even while living in a city life, our batteries need to be recharged, so the best time is to take a short vacation, a trip to the beach, park , visit forests having breathtaking views near mountains or any wildlife sanctuaries you see around.


8. Give thanks -to your ancestors, to the creator, the nature , for the air you breathe, your friends, your family, and everyone that makes you feel lucky and happy. Count your blessings and see how happiness grows.


9. Live in the moment - The author says stop regretting the past, the future is yet to come with worries, live today , Today is all you have, make the most of it and worth remembering.


10. Follow your passions - Follow your passions, that is for you to discover. That unique talent will drive you and make the best of yourself. The author says the moment you discover your Ikigai, your life will have a purpose, and you will achieve a happy state of flow in all you do . It doesn't have to be anything big, a simple help you do to someone or becoming a good parent . If you don’t find them, then go deeper into your activities and find out what you love to do and what drives you into that flow. The more you flow, the closer you will be to IKIGAI.
After reading this book, I am sure most of you will find a reason to jump from the bed each morning searching for one's IKIGAI.
