We all do some work in our lives. It could be our house or workplace or outdoors or even during an outing, we take up some task. Some people are able to work a few type of jobs while many others are capable of doing a variety of jobs from helping their wives in kitchen to running a big business. Different people have different approach to their work and some attend to it seriously while there are some who take it casually. That is what makes a difference in the quality of output produced by these different people.
Why do we work
Many people have a very casual attitude towards work. Surprisingly they often ask as why at all they should work. They also tell that if they do not have money then they will do some work whatever available and earn some money. After that they will be happy to spend that money in the indulgences they like and then go for some other job to earn some more money as and when it is required. This is really a very grave situation if a person is so much lethargic and lazy in his life considering working as the last option,
On the other hand there are people who do their work sincerely and try to make a career in a particular field. They act in a focussed and concentrated way to do their work and take full responsibility for it. They learn new skills and methods and then they also earn their livelihood out of that. Some of them even make their work as their passion area and do it with utmost interest.
It is very clear that we work to earn as well as to engage ourselves in positive territories bringing happiness and prosperity in our lives.
How to bring proficiency in work
No work is small and no work is big when we really want to do them patiently in a correct and proper way. Historically, it is seen that humans have a peculiar tendency of doing things by resorting to short cuts. The hilarious part is that no one knows what these people do with the time gained or saved in such processes. We have to understand that short cuts always tend to bring errors in our job performance and sometimes the results could be disastrous. I remember a case related to one of my friends who did his Master's in Science and joined an Electronics laboratory as technical assistant. He learnt the responsibilities quickly and started to discharge his duties. One day his supervisor called him for a job to be done on urgent basis and he was asked to do it in bare minimum time. As this was an opportunity to showcase one's knowledge and calibre the assistant did it hurriedly and forget to connect a part in the assembly and when he called the supervisor for checking and testing it before giving it for use then while testing the assembly burst and burnt as soon as the electric power was put on. Supervisor was shocked to see it and was worried for the commitment made by him for the delivery of the assembly. The assistant was helpless and was repenting on his haste. The lesson learnt was that one should never be in a hurry while doing a job.
Job or task may be technical or managerial or white collar or a hybrid of all these but it has to be taken up with confidence and calibre for completing it. In case of doubt regarding the performance it would be better to refuse the offer rather showing enthusiasm for it but not able to deliver it.
There is no magic potion for working perfectly but there are some common measures and ideas that one can take and keep in mind and try to follow for a better outcome.
Have patience:We must keep in our mind that every job requires some time to do it and there are already standard norms for them. It is necessary to adhere to those guidelines and respect them. Hurry will never work and it will in fact create mistakes, errors, and flaws in our work.
Follow the sequence:Every work is to be done in a sequence or order for optimal utilisation of time and resources in hand. Some people try to skip some steps in between to save time but that would be not advisable as it might affect the quality of the work or quality of the product to be made. The basic mantra in this regard is that the SOP (Standard Operating Practices) should not be compromised till a better and authentic SOP is available in the matter for the worker or user.
Do not feel shy in taking help:While doing a job there are times when one is stuck at some point and is not able to find out a way as how to proceed ahead from that point. In such situation one should take help from anyone who knows as how to do it. We should not feel shy to ask our junior colleague or anyone else because if we do not tell them then how they would know that we are stuck at a point. Once they are aware then it is up to them to help or not but they know our needs and definitely we require a helping hand to come out of the crisis. Once we are out of that problem we can thank them and also help them when they need us in future. Cultivating good relations with colleagues is always a rewarding thing in itself.
Check progress intermittently:Sometimes a job may be elaborate and lengthy and doing it in one go may be risky as any small error crept at some place might become a big problem later and tracing back the process becomes a herculean task. So, it is imperative that one should stop at places in between the work process and look back and check the progress so far and see if any correction or modification is required. Taking these measures will definitely help and chances of achieving better job performance increas significantly.
Do not reinvent the wheel:We have to use the existing knowledge and fundamentals in our work flow and should not waste time in working out the basic things repeatedly. It is prudent to use established and authentic practices without doubting their validity or effectiveness.
Keep the group people in the loop:Whenever we work in a group it is necessary to keep a cohesion between the group members and that will be achieved only when the group members keep a continuous communication and exchange of information with each other. So for a better outcome in any group task activity, it is necessary that people should work closely and in perfect unison.
Keep notes:This is an age old technique but people are ignoring it nowadays. Anyway, some people are using their smartphones to jot down some important points while working so that they can refer to it if such a need arises. Some people believe that one need not to jot down as one can simply memorise those points. I strongly feel that one should not be so over confident of one's memory. It is always better to note down the things as there is no substitute for record keeping.
How to cope up with failures
Sometimes we take up some job or task and try to do it in the almost perfect fashion and complete it with all the care as was supposed to be taken in the matter. All said and done, unfortunately due to various factors which are out of our control, we fail in our endeavours and feel discouraged. Even the most intelligent, smart, and knowledgeable people face such setbacks in their lives and feel helpless in such a situation.
So, sometimes failures will be there but they are to be taken as the experiences and learnings for the future. I strongly believe that failures teach us much more than the successes and we have to learn from those failures for changing our strategy or way of tackling issues and problems in our lives. We must understand that a perfect job may not necessarily materialise in success but that awareness should not deter us from attempting other jobs in a perfect manner.
Points to ponder
Doing things with precision and in perfect ways inculcate improvement, learning, and confidence in us. If we do things in a shabby manner then we lose that great benefit. People who are interested in their progress and development choose the path of doing things in the best possible manner. One interesting thing in this context is that there is nothing like hundred percent perfection. It does not exist in the real world. We can only go on improving ourselves doing better and better than the earlier times. So let us not run after the elusive hundred percent perfection and focus and concentrate simply for continuous improvement.
While laziness is the biggest enemy of action, the casual activity is the great enemy of perfect working. Inclination and hard work are the essential elements for working in a desired arena and concentration, optimal use of available resources, and focus is required to do it in a perfect manner.

Thanks Umesh for the great article. I feel perfection is a double-edged sword. It might either make you better or might make you worse if you devote too much time on doing something useless. The best way to do things would be to run after excellence. Once we follow excellence perfection would come automatically.
