Who was Asiya Bint Muzahim?

Some women submit to Allah and no matter what great tyrant comes their way nothing can shake their faith in the oneness of their God. They are strengthened by Allah SWT. Hazrat Asiya was one of those women whose resolve cannot be shaken. She is revered by the Muslims for her strength and status and is one of the greatest women of all time. Asiya was the wife of the pharaoh who reigned at the time of prophet Moses A.S. she was married to one of the evillest men to walk on earth but never lost her faith in Allah.

Hazrat Asiya was the honorable and respectable lady who pulled the baby Moses out of the river Nile. At that time the male infants of Hebrew were brutally being slaughtered by the order of the pharaoh. So the mother of Moses placed the baby in a basket and set it in the river Nile. The basket stopped near the house of the pharaoh and Asiya founded and kept the baby for herself as she instantly felt motherly love for the boy. She took pity on the baby and decided to raise him, and named him Moses.

Hazrat Asiya has been mentioned in the Quran, twice, without her name. One time she has been mentioned when she took Moses out of the Nile. Allah says in surah al Qasas: “and the wife of Pharaoh said: (this child) would be the comfort of the eye for me and you. Kill him not, perhaps he may be of benefit to us, or we may adopt him as a son, but they perceive not (the result of that)”.

When Asiya observed the miracle of Moses against the wizards of Egypt, her heart was filled with faith in Allah. After seeing that miracle, she believed in Moses as the prophet of Allah. At first, she concealed her faith from everyone but the pharaoh became aware of that and restrained her many times to give up her faith in Allah, but this strong and exemplary woman never surrendered to her husband. Finally, her hands and legs were tied and she was placed under the hot sun with a heavy stone on her chest which leads to her martyrdom.

Another time she is mentioned in the Holy Quran when she prays to Allah to build a house for her in paradise near Him, and save her from Pharaoh and his wrongdoer fellows. Asiya bint Muzahim is one of the flawless and ideal women mentioned in the Quran. She was a beautiful and generous lady. She was given a high status in the world but she paid no attention to the worldly issues and she was never influenced by the pharaoh’s brutality. She protected and supported Moses throughput his childhood and raised him into a fine young man. Pharaoh tried so hard to kill Moses but Asiya never let him be successful as she loved Moses as his child. She was well aware of the fact that there is a supreme being above all of us. Asiya sheltered and nurtured Allah’s prophet and in return, Allah guided her to real faith. In the end, Hazrat Asiya bint Muzahim was brutally killed by the cruel pharaoh. On the day of judgment, Hazrat Asiya will be among the first women to enter the paradise.

Asiya was a woman of high status and honor, although she was heartlessly oppressed by her husband still she never lost her faith in Allah. She was the wife of the most powerful and rich man of that time but she had no attachment to this world. No matter what hardship came in her way she never lost the clear idea of who she was and what she believes in.
