The beginning

Iqbal was a spy, he remembered he is called into the director’s office. The chief looked at the man and said, “ you been sitting idle for a long time and you were complaining; Well I am going to give you an assignment; a dangerous one but I am sure you will succeed.”

Iqbal was not used to asking any superfluous questions, so all he asked was, “What is the assignment?”

The Chief cleared his throat and replied, “nobody knows about this, not even the president and prime minister, it’s a hush- hush mission, you will proceed to the United States.”

“ Who has authorised this mission?”

“The chief of our department Lieutenant general Babbar”

“ What am I supposed to do there?”

“ You will be contacted by our agent Sally Field and liaise with her to facilitate two other men from Palestine who will fire bomb the Israeli consulate.”

“ In New York?”

“Yes”

“ This girl, Sally Field? What about her?”

“ Ah, we have checked up on her and she will be your conduit. She is reliable and can be trusted.”

“ What next?”

“ The bombing of the consulate will be in another 3 days, thus there is no time. Your travel documents are ready and you fly out today. You will proceed to New York and at the airport this lady will contact you.”

“ How will I know her?”

“ She will recognize you and contact you and that is all. Maintain silence and don’t contact us till the deed is done.”

Iqbal left the director’s office and drove straight to his hotel. It was a five-star hotel and he went and checked into his room. He wondered how correct the director was regarding the contact he was to meet. How was the boss so sure about her. He had been in the field for 20 years and he knew his onions. He had even spent one year in Agra and the Indians never knew about him.

Iqbal now took the flight to New York. He was traveling first class and he looked imposing in his suit as a businessman. The air hostess served him his whiskey and he wondered how good looking Sally Field was. He hoped she was good looking, because it would be a shame if you have to work with a girl who was not good looking or sexy.

The operation

He landed at the airport and came out of customs and immigration. Everything had gone with the clockwork mechanism and he came into the lounge and looked around he wondered if this girl probably would contact him now.

As he was standing, he felt somebody tap his shoulder. He looked back and was absolutely stunned to see a beautiful girl standing. The first thing he observed was her skirt which was above her knee displaying a pair of the most beautiful legs. Yes, Iqbal thought she is beautiful and sexy and it will be a pleasure to work with her.

“ Sally Field?” He asked.

“ Yes,” the girl replied, “ there is no time to lose and we will straight away go to the bar close by and I will explain everything.”

“OK, let’s go, will there be anybody else in the bar?”

“ One other man will be there, but we have to hurry as we are late as the flight has been delayed by an hour.”

They reached the bar. Shoving through the bar crowd, Iqbal bumped a tipsy woman who spilled her drink on him. She apologized, but Iqbal ignored her. The girl with Iqbal moved to an exclusive seat at the corner of the bar. A man was already sitting at the table. He got up and shook the hand of Iqbal, “ I am Hussain,” he introduced himself, “ and I know you are Iqbal.”

All three sat down at the table and a round of hard liquor was served. Hussain sipped his drink and then drained the glass in one gulp.

"Sorry," Hussain said. " The flight was late and we have to make up for the lost time.”

"Won't matter," Iqbal replied,” There are 3 days for the event and an hour has little meaning.”

“ It has, “ Sally butted in, “ look under the table.”

Iqbal looked and found a taped envelope; He pulled it loose; opened it. Inside were billed $10,000 and the wad would be half an inch thick.

“ What’s this money for?”

“ Your expenses.”

“ This is peanuts,” Iqbal replied,” You want cooperation, I want more money."

“ How much?”

“Another 8000”

“That’s too much.”

“Ok, I will settle for 5, but the bargain is the girl, she will be mine for 3 days and nights.”

Hussain smiled, “ it’s a deal, but Sally must approve.”

Both the men looked at Sally, who stared back without a word and Hussein said,” the deal is sealed.”

He picked up his glass and so did Sally and said,” come on Iqbal let us now drink a toast of success, to the bombing of the consulate.”

Iqbal felt euphoric at the ease of his success and conquest and even at that time the first thought that is coming to his mind was stripping the beautiful Sally and making love to her; what a wonderful bonus for the mission. He drained the glass at one go and very soon Hussein poured him another peg. He consumed the second peg also and looked at Sally and said,” after this my dear, we shall go to my hotel room.”

“If you are fit and alive,” she replied softly.

“ What do you mean?” he asked a little irritably.

Both Hussein and Sally kept silent and Iqbal had an uncanny feeling that something strange was happening. He couldn’t pinpoint what it was but definitely, his sixth sense told him something was amiss.

As he drank his third peg, he smiled at Sally and said,” we are going to work together, and don’t look at me like that, it looks like that you are going to kill me,” he laughed.

Sally smiled at Iqbal and said,” no Iqbal, I am not going to kill you but Hussein has already done it; he has put a trans-dermal drug in your drink. It will take a little time but it won’t hurt."

Last gasp

Iqbal tried to get up, as the realization dawned on him that he had been tricked and he was going to die. He realized he couldn’t get up and his vision was getting blurred. The last he saw was Sally and the man called Hussein just get up and walk away and soon they had intermingled with the crowd and vanished even as Iqbal collapsed on the table; dead. The last thought in his mind was not of Sally but that he had been beaten at the game by American and Israeli intelligence.
