Sylvia Plath Quotes and Poems

A compilation of the best Sylvia Plath quotes, poems, words and sayings. I love quotes and this famous poet is special in my hub hub.

Sylvia Plath, one of the best poets ever!

What’s interesting to do during rainy days…snogging and cuddling under the warm sheets? Or dvd marathon and eating pizza with your boyfriend? I’d say neither. Why not spend the day reading words from the first poet who won a Pulitzer Prize, Sylvia Plath. Sylvia Plath by the way is also known as Victoria Lucas for using that pseudonym. This writer, novelist is so interesting like my hubs. ;) Ok enough rambling here, let's just go with Sylvia’s quotes and words from her poems. Here we go, Sylvia Plath’s quotes and poetry from her writings…

Let me live, love and say it well in good sentences.

I dreamed that you bewitched me into bed

And sung me moon-struck,

Kissed me quite insane.

(I think I made you up inside my head.)

You ask why I spend my life writing?
Do I find entertainment?
Is it worthwhile?
Above all, does it pay?
If not, then is there a reason…?
I write only because
There is a voice within me
That will not be still.

Perhaps when we find ourselves wanting everything, it is because we are dangerously close to wanting nothing.

I don’t care about anyone, and the feeling is quite obviously mutual.

If you expect nothing from anybody, you’re never disappointed.

Remember, remember, this is now, and now, and now. Live it, feel it, cling to it. I want to become acutely aware of all I've taken for granted.

Out of the ash
I rise with my red hair
And I eat men like air.

You come in late, wiping your lips.
What did I leave untouched on the doorstep… -from The Other

I must get my soul back from you; I am killing my flesh without it.

I love him to hell and back and heaven and back, and have and do and will.

All morning, with smoking breath, the handyman
Has been draining the goldfish ponds.
They collapse like lungs, the escaped water
Threading back, filament by filament, to the pure
Platonic table where it lives.

Private Ground

I must stop identifying with the seasons, because this English winter will be the death of me.

That’s one of the reasons I never wanted to get married. The last thing I wanted was infinite security and to be the place an arrow shoots off from. I wanted change and excitement and to shoot off in all directions myself, like the colored arrows from a Fourth of July rocket.—The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

The silence depressed me. It wasn’t the silence of silence. It was my own silence.

I have the choice of being constantly active and happy or introspectively passive and sad. Or I can go mad by ricocheting in between.

Kiss me and you will see how important I am.

I thought the most beautiful thing in the world must be shadow, the million moving shapes and cul-de-sacs of shadow. There was shadow in bureau drawers and closets and suitcases, and shadow under houses and trees and stones, and shadow at the back of people’s eyes and smiles, and shadow, miles and miles of it, on the night side of the earth. -The Bell Jar

There is so much hurt in this game of searching for a mate, of testing, trying. And you realize suddenly you forgot it was a game, and turn away in tears. - The Journals of Sylvia Plath

And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.

The blood jet is poetry and there is no stopping it.

Dying is an art, like everything else. I do it exceptionally well. I do it so it feels like hell. I do it so it feels real. I guess you could say I've a call.

Life has been some combination of fairy-tale coincidence and joie de vivre and shocks of beauty together with some hurtful self-questioning.

I didn’t know why I was going to cry, but I knew that if anybody spoke to me or looked at me too closely the tears would fly out of my eyes and the sobs would fly out of my throat and I’d cry for a week. I could feel the tears brimming and sloshing in me like water in a glass that is unsteady and too full.—Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar

There must be quite a few things a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them.—Sylvia Plath in The Bell Jar

Because wherever I sat—on the deck of a ship or at a street café in Paris or Bangkok—I would be sitting under the same glass bell jar, stewing in my own sour air.— Sylvia Plath (The Bell Jar)

I also hate people to ask cheerfully how you are when they know you’re feeling like hell and expect you to say ‘fine.'— The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

So much working, reading, living to do! A lifetime is not long enough.

Can you understand? Someone, somewhere, can you understand me a little, love me a little? For all my despair, for all my ideals, for all that - I love life. But it is hard, and I have so much - so very much to learn.— The Journals of Sylvia Plath

There is so much hurt in this game of searching for a mate, of testing, trying. And you realize suddenly you forgot it was a game, and turn away in tears.-The Journals of Sylvia Plath

i am vertical

but i would rather be horizontal.
i am not a tree with my root in the soil
sucking up minerals and motherly love
so that each march i may gleam into leaf…

We should meet in another life, we should meet in air,

Me and you.

Sylvia Plath in Ariel

I felt dreadfully inadequate. The trouble was, I had been inadequate all along, I simply hadn't thought about it.

How we need that security! How we need another soul to cling to, another body to keep us warm. To rest and trust; to give your soul in confidence: I need this, I need someone to pour myself into.

I won’t call you darling; that would be cute. And I’m not being cute, not tonight. I wanted to tell you how you are beginning to be the one I can talk to […] I don’t write this to you, because it is not time. I may never tell you, and in years, I may not need to, because you might become part of my life—-physically and mentally… and there would be no need to verbalize because you would understand. -Sylvia Plath, Unabridged Jounals

And for the finale, my favorite from her poems...this will make you fall in love...

Mad Girl's Love Song--Sylvia Plath

“I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead;
I lift my lids and all is born again.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

The stars go waltzing out in blue and red,
And arbitrary blackness gallops in:
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.

I dreamed that you bewitched me into bed
And sung me moon-struck, kissed me quite insane.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

God topples from the sky, hell’s fires fade:
Exit seraphim and Satan’s men:
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.

I fancied you’d return the way you said,
But I grow old and I forget your name.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

I should have loved a thunderbird instead;
At least when spring comes they roar back again.
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

Grab her books! So so beautiful!
