Shopping Mall Etiquette 101

Shopping Fun

The time has come for a lesson in shopping mall etiquette. Do you get frustrated with the crowds at the mall? Are you annoyed with the unruly children? Do you cut down your time at the mall due to all the frustrations? You are not alone!

Many shoppers are tired of all the rude shoppers at the mall. There are a lot of inconsiderate (even if unintentional) people out there. Hopefully, some of those inconsiderate (yet clueless) people will read this etiquette lesson and they will learn to change. Even if they do not, there is no reason why we can't have a good laugh about them.

Bratty Kids

Guess what?  Are your children bratty?  Do they run all over the mall and won't listen?  Do they get on your nerves?  If you answered "yes" to these questions, your children are not only annoying you, but they are annoying everyone else at the mall.  If you can't control your child, then don't take them to the mall.  Maybe that sounds a little harsh, but it is what everyone is thinking (but won't tell you).  Your kids are ruining what should be a peaceful day at the mall for everyone else.

Another really important thing to keep in mind while at the mall with your children is the Tot Lot (or whatever your mall calls the children's play area) is not on-site daycare.  DO NOT leave your child playing with other children and walk away.  Have you seen some of the shady characters at the mall?  Some parents assume the play area is being monitored by a mall employee.  I am here to tell you NO ONE is watching your kids if you are not - except maybe a creepy person looking for an opportunity to snatch a child.  So do not leave your child unattended.

Keep Up the Pace

Are you a slow walker? Not a problem. Walk closer to the wall. Do not walk in the very center where everyone else is walking. Sadly, someone will be more inclined to bump you, especially if the mall is crowded.

Are you new to the mall and you want to stop frequently to look at stores? Once again, keep it to the side while walking. You see, there are people who know where they are going and they will run you over to get there.

Are you a stop and go kind of person? When you are walking along do you move quickly, but suddenly make a fast stop? You are just hoping someone will run into you, right? You have to realize you can't do that in a crowded mall. You have to keep up with the pace of those around you. If you are going to come to a sudden stop, you must check to make sure no one is behind you or just move to the side. It is just like driving a car. You keep making stops like that and someone is going to rear end you.

What's All the Yelling About?

Have you ever been in a mall and you see your pal from back in the day on the next level of the mall about 100 feet away? Do you just wish you could yell at him or do you actually yell at him? If you answered "yes" to that question, then this section of this etiquette lesson is specifically for you.

Don't scream all over the mall trying to get people's attention. You see, when you yell in a crowded area like that, sometimes people panic. No one is sure if someone is trying to communicate to their friend across the mall or if they are screaming because they are about to be mauled by a crazed bear that snuck in the mall. Please stop scaring people. You can run after your friend if you need to do so; sometimes you just have to let them go though. Destiny just did not put the two of you together.

The Mall Parking Lot (a.k.a. Hell on Earth)

I know everyone has a beautiful dream about getting that spot right next to the door. It is nice to dream, but it is unlikely it will happen unless you get to the mall at the crack of dawn. Do yourself and everyone else a favor by accepting your fate right now. If you have to park away from the door or on an upper level in the garage, just walk some. Walking is good for you! It gets your heart pumping and burns calories. Using the stairs really helps burn the calories, too. It will be OK; give it a try!

Here is something scary that people need to stop doing. Do not follow behind walkers with your car thinking you will get their parking spot. If you are doing that, I don't know if you want my parking space or you want to kidnap me to perform a satanic ritual that night. Stop creeping out pedestrians!

Just About Enough

I think this is just about enough shopping mall etiquette for one day. I was going to approach the topic of food court etiquette, but quite frankly, I think that is another whole hub. So goodbye for now and tune in next time for Mall Food Court Etiquette 101 .

I hope you've learned something about fellow mall shoppers today. Thanks for reading and see you next time!

Yes, I know what you mean. Some people walk as if they've never been in a mall before or as if they've never seen other people. People seriously need to keep it moving. Thanks for the comment!

"Keep Up The Pace" is my pet peeve at the mall. I am so irritated by folks who don't consider that someone can be behind them, AND the group that has to ALL walk side-by-side! There are times I wish I was a human BOBCAT, and I'd shovel people out of the way! Sounds harsh, but in my mind, it's fun, and it works!

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on April 16, 2011:

Thank you! Keeping up the pace is important to a successful day at the mall. I can't stand it when people stop without any warning.

NateSean from Salem, MA on April 16, 2011:

You are a visionary. Keep up the pace has been so relevant in my recent mall crawling experiences. Especially in the case of large groups of people who are together, but think they are the only people trying to get anywhere.

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on April 05, 2011:

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it.

UltimateMovieRankings from Virginia on April 05, 2011:

I enjoyed reading your hub.....I find your writing to very truthful and funny....keep up the great work

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on April 05, 2011:

I had the same thing happen to me when I worked at McDonald's! Some dude yelled at me one day because his kids placed the wrong order and no one helped them carry the food to the car. That is some nerve when a parent is too lazy to the get out the car and he gets upset with staff for not watching his kids. People are crazy!

Sunnyglitter from Cyberspace on April 04, 2011:

I have seen people ditch their kids in the mall playground. They did the same thing when I was a manager at McDonald's back in the day. One idiot had the nerve to yell at me for not watching her child while she was in the bathroom. Sorry ma'am, I was getting paid to make your food, not watch your child. My title was Fast Food Manager, not nanny.

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on April 04, 2011:

Exactly! Or at least hanging out in the basement and listening to bad music. :-)

Jeanastra on April 04, 2011:

Yeah, those goth kids should be hangin' out in the cemetary looking for vampires! :-p

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on April 04, 2011:

Yes, this is so true. I was kind of thinking of them with the bratty kids section, but I suppose they do deserve their own section. There is one mall near me where just the goth kids hang out. That is so weird to me. If someone is so goth, why are they at the mall? Thanks for the comment and the vote up!

Jeanastra on April 04, 2011:

What about the teens?? I made the mistake of going to a mall with a friend on a Saturday evening and it was full of annoying packs of teens. It was utter HELL. VOTED UP!

Jeannie Marie (author) from Baltimore, MD on April 04, 2011:

Wow! To think I just turned the computer off one night and I got all these comments! Thank you, everyone! I always appreciate the comments. I am glad you understand my frustrations at the mall.

mrsbudryzer from Jersey Shore on April 04, 2011:

I love your etiquette hubs!!! Always filled with humor and honest to goodness truth. Keep at em!

LorreesWorld from Colorado on April 03, 2011:

Oh man, many reasons I avoid malls! lol

Adam from Tennessee on April 03, 2011:

Voted up, funny, useful... I usually go to the mall after all the stores have closed and the front doors are still open. That way I get a great parking space, I avoid all the annoying kids and the rude shoppers, and I can shout as loud as I want. I can't buy anything, of course, but I never do when I go to the mall. I sometimes watch those kids play on the plastic playground, but only to see if one of them falls and hits their head. Yeah, I get bored at malls. Maybe next time I'll take a crazed bear with me.

Paradise7 from Upstate New York on April 03, 2011:

Yeah, I liked it. Good hub. I stopped doing malls a long time ago and just shop online. So much easier. You hit my main reasons, all of them!

Carolyn Gibson from Boston on April 03, 2011:

Very nice Hub. Plan to read the other ones, too,
