In the year 2021, if I was a young person starting out in life, what is the best path to a prosperous and fulfilling life?
Call it a road map or a guide, here are some simple steps.
- July 2021
There are certain sound principles. These have been tested over time and have proven to be valid. Some basic beliefs and some hard work and voila, you are home free.
- time management
Balance and moderation. Too much of anything, is not necessarily good for you.
Time is money. Don't waste time on small stuff.
Sound mind, sound body. Your health is everything. Exercise and eat right.
Practice makes perfect. Whatever you choose to do, do the best you can.
Have a positive attitude, always. The power of positive thinking.
Respect your elders, they have some life experiences.
The Golden Rule...treat others as you would want to be treated. It will come back to you many folds.
Enjoy the present moment.
Your Spirit or your soul requires attention as well as your body.
Bring joy to the people around you.
- self reliance
- hard work
- helping others
- bring joy
Conservative belief in self reliance. It is a virtue to be self sufficient. Once you can take care of yourself, you are more capable of helping others.
Work is a major part of our existence. Working hard and achieving results is part of life.
Learning is not just for school. Life is a continuous learning process. Learning is what makes us better in decision making.
Helping others is something unique to the human experience. It differentiates us from the animal kingdom. This is actually a selfish move. Why do so many wealthy people donate to charities and establish Foundations? Because it makes themselves feel good.
Joy is something we all strife for. If we can bring joy to a kid or some stranger, it is a good thing. As part of our human existence, a brief moment in time, if we made this world a little better, and bring joy to our family, friends and neighbors and colleagues...that is the ultimate reward of a life well lived.
Step by Step
- Get a good education
- participate in a sport
- make some friends
- attend church, Bible study
- do some volunteer work
- write a journal and write down your goals
- save for your retirement
- Find your passion
The steps I outlined are simple and self explanatory. If there are any doubt as to what I am talking about, please send me a comment and I will explain in more detail.
I will say about finding your passion is not easy. Most people, let along students, have no clue what to study or pursue. I will say passion and your livelihood are not the same. It would be great if it was but only a few people get to do what they love and get paid for it.
As for choosing a career, it is ok not to know in the beginning. That is why some people go to college. You are exposed to various topics and disciplines. You have to match your interests with your natural ability. If your are good with your hands, perhaps a trade school is a better alternative.
God gave each of us talents so that we can contribute to society. We have various skills and ability and everyone is needed.
When you adopt a conservative philosophy, and put them to practice, you will see results. It may take a while to materialize. It is very much like investing. You start by putting a small amount of money away and save, and pretty soon that money will grow steadily at first but exponentially later.
Have patience and enjoy the journey.
Live in the present but always reflect on the past. This may seem like a contradiction but it is not. A reflection is like a reality check. Were the principles and beliefs correct and validated?
Reflections are not regrets. Life is a journey of ups and downs. You want to track those steps so you don't end up drifting too far from your goals.
The bottom line is this. You are in control of your destiny. Somethings we have control over and somethings we don't. That is a fact of life.
The Serenity Prayer is a good reminder of that and also an acknowledgement. That is where the wisdom comes in. We only develop wisdom with age and experience and the help of God.
"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference."
I cannot provide any guarantees. I can only make this promise. If you follow these steps, you will live a happier and more fulfilled life.
Life is a journey and it is different for each of us. We each hold the destiny in our hands. Not all people are given this blessing. For the greater part of human history, most people lived under a king, or a tyrant, or a dictator...and were controlled by others.
It was only a short 230 years ago that our country was formed and adopted a new Constitution of government. A government of the people, a democracy and a free republic.
Conservatives value our history, our past and our freedom. Recognizing that we are not a perfect nation, yet we strife for that more perfect union, in hope of making our lives and the lives of our children and grand children better than what we had in the beginning.
