Review: Fleur Britten Writes on a Topical Subject for Young Girls in Debrett's 'Etiquette for Girls'

An Air Warrior and devotee of Lord Krishna has published over 120 short stories and 15 books on fiction and 4 on military history.

Before I write anything further I think it is important to understand what etiquette means. We need not look beyond the definition given by Merriam Webster which can be read. It is the conduct of a person in society and office that creates an aura around that person. In other words, it means how to conduct yourself so that the people you meet are favorably impressed with you as a woman of substance and charm.

Etiquette is not a constant factor throughout history and it has been changing over the centuries. Earlier women were not allowed to go out of the house but in the 21st-century there is what is called the emancipation of girls and women and now there are no restrictions on them and they can proceed and do any work which men can do and that includes even the Armed Forces.

In such a scenario there was a need for a book or a guide for young girls on how to conduct themselves in the office as well as when they meet men in their life. I don't recollect reading any book on such a subject and all credit to Fleur Britten who has written such a wonderful book, which is a tremendous guide to a young girl and a woman in the modern world.

Fleur Britten was earlier working with the Sunday Times in London but with the advent of the pandemic, she decided to branch out on her own. She has written six books that have been well received and one of her books which I really like is Debrett's etiquette for girls.

Debrett is the publisher of this book and it has an association with Fleur Britten. It's a publishing house that is over 200 years old and is one of the respected oldies in the game.

The Book

The book ‘Etiquette for Girls’ was published over a decade back but its popularity has not diminished. The basic thrust of the writer is to try and give courage to young girls on how to conduct themselves in life. A very significant portion of the book concerns what is called 'managing men' because this is one aspect, young girls are going to come across again and again. A girl could meet a man in a bar and decide to have a one-off fling or it could be a long emotional involvement and there is also a chance that an older man could make his presence felt in the life of the girl. The 21st-century is fraught with such tales and incidents and I can assure you that this is common all over the world, perhaps not in the very conservative Muslim nations.

Etiquette in Other Fields

Britten has written pages on dating and love affairs. She gives good advice to young girls on how to dress for the occasion and how to conduct themselves during a date. There are also pages devoted to how to conduct yourself in case you were thrown into high society and attending something like a horse polo match where some royal parsonage may play. I have no hesitation echoing her thoughts on polo matches because I play a lot of horse polo myself and this is an excellent place to strike a relationship.

She even brings out how to dress in the office and how to conduct yourself there so that you endear yourself to the men and impress the boss as well.

Last word

Fleur Britten also touches on a very important aspect and that is a conversation because this is something that will bring out the essence of the girl. She discusses this in detail and any girl reading this can understand how to make conversation which is suitable to the occasion. Her tips on how to dress for the occasion is a plus point, that can be like a beacon to a young girl.

Etiquette for Girls explains how to behave in every social situation, from flirting to one-night stands and breaking up. What to wear, dining out, socializing and entertaining at home even traveling in a private jet. All in all, it's a wonderful book and I think men can also find time to read it.

Britten is an independent-minded girl and she lives alone with two children ages six and nine and a couple of cats. She has written a number of books which are very popular as well but definitely, this book on etiquette for young girls takes the cake.

Thanks Emge. Very proud of you! Some readers either don't seem to appreciate the value of the book or have given up. A society will decay without leadership. In the same way, morals and etiguette are imperative! We suffer because we have neglected many. A great read!

What an interesting book and topic. It sounds like a book that would have been written in Victorian times and not today, which makes it all the more fascinating. Thanks for the review.
