Rainbow Mountain - A Short Story

Author:

Mountain

Bill Holland issues a challenge and we all come galloping with our Swords and Staffs aswinging!

Okay you get my point! lol!

So here's my little contribution Bill and thanks for making me get up off my backside and write again. Been ages!

'I call it rainbow mountain because it reminds me of the one in Peru, but this one was different, very different. This one was not of this world'.

'My name is Jennifer Dalton and I am a geologist. When I was asked to come and take a look at this amazing phenomenon I presumed it was just another mountain. Little did I know what I was letting myself in for. This was unworldly. The colors sliding down into pools of liquid gold as the suns rays stood at noon, took my breath away. As I got nearer I realized that something wasn't quite right'.

'For starters the more I ascended the mountain the farther away it seemed to be. it was teasing me, goading me into its trap of beauty. Each color shimmered and beckoned to me, reaching out on strands of sunlight reaching towards me as if to say, come closer. And I did. Or at least I tried to'.

'But let me start at the beginning, where all good stories start. I was in Egypt helping a colleague search out new minerals and veins full of gold. Not something you would expect out there but Mother nature is always out to delight and confuse us'. Little did I know that when the phone call came it would change my life.

'Hello, who is this?'

'Hi Jen, how busy are you? I have got something that is going to blow you away! How quick can you get here?'

'Where's here?' After listening to the voice at the other end I wrote down the coordinates and turned off the phone. I could feel the excitement beginning to stir like butterflies and quickly I went over to my colleague and said I had to go, and go now.

'What is it Jen?' Sara stood up and rubbed her forehead with the back of her hand.

'I don't know yet but it sounds intriguing!'

'Good luck!' She said turning back to the dig.

'I caught the first plane out and headed towards who knew what, but hey, I loved new discoveries, and this was exciting'!

Old red barn

Old red barn

I remembered driving past an old railway yard, but my mind has been doing funny things since I started out. Did that carriage move as I drove passed it? Why did the colors on the carriages seem to flake and fall as I sped past?

Shaking my head I realized that I must be tired, so turned onto a side road hoping to find a town where I could lay my head for a while. But there was only an old red barn on the side of the road. I found shelter at the side of the old place and pulling up I decided to sleep for a while, then drive on in the morning. No one was about, it felt safe and soon I felt myself drifting off.

The morning brought little respite. I still felt fuzzy and strange. My memory also felt shot to pieces, maybe I was going down with something, I didn't know.

I drove on and soon came to the coordinates that my colleague had given me. At first I couldn't see anything at all. It just looked like any other mountain. But there was one thing very strange about it. It was glowing!

Shaking my head I searched for Dr. Jack Graham the guy who had phoned me. We had been friends for many years and I found it strange that he wasn't here to meet me. I still felt fuzzy but decided to carry on alone.

I started to climb.....

Rainbow mountain

Rainbow mountain

I am feeling really strange. The lights, oh the lights emanating from the surface of the mountain. Is that sand? I believe it is, why sand?

I reach down and run my fingers through the dust. It tingles, a soft scratchy feeling, and the light and color gets brighter. My eyes are stinging now, and I can't feel my legs. The multi colored mountain is eating me, that's what it feels like! Why am I here? Who am I? I need to lie down, just for a moment, not for long just.....

'Jennifer! Where are you? JEN...?'

'who...?' 'My mind is swirling with colors, lovely beautiful colors.....'

I feel myself being dragged away, something slapping my face, what?

'Jen wake up!

Suddenly the ground started shaking. A deep rumbling was felt coming up from the earth. Dr. Jack Graham grabbed Jen and ran down the side of the mountain towards his car.

'What the hell were you doing up there?' He yelled.

'I don't know, it was you who told me to get out here, what the heck is that?' I struggled to get up, my head still felt hot and woolly.

'I never told you to come here? I went to look for you in Egypt, they told me you had received a phone call from me, and well, I didn't know what to think, so I came after you'.

Suddenly there was a blinding light, and the earth seemed to sigh then crumble. Jack grabbed Jen and pushed her into the car. Putting his foot to the pedal the car juddered and then seemed to leap down the mountain. Looking back over his shoulder Jack blinked and swore.

'What the hell?' The light was blinding and then....

Lights appeared in the mountain..mountain? no, this wasn't a mountain anymore. The lights from the huge Spaceship seemed to chase them like a colored silken threads, spiders webs! Jack thought with a sick rush to the throat, and then with one swift move, a grind of gears, and tyres that spun like the hounds out of hell Jack, the car and Jen shot down the hill, straight through the woods and onto the freeway.

Ten minutes later they slowed and stopped.

Jack leaned over the wheel and wheezed 'what the hell was that? No don't answer, lets just get the hell out of here!'

Jen nodded, and shaking took his hand.

'Next time you ring me make sure I am talking to the real Jack okay?'

After the car zoomed off the earth seemed to settle and sigh. until the next time.
