Mirrors-See Beyond the Reflection

Mirrors-See Beyond the Reflection

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder-We have often heard this phrase, first coined by Plato, the great Greek philosopher. What exactly does it mean?

The paraphrase of Plato refers to the subjective experience of beauty. It means that beauty is not intrinsic to a person or thing. It is personal experience of objects. Without a beholder or person who appreciates the beauty of a person or thing, beauty would not mean anything.

Your self-worth is determined by you. You don’t have to depend on someone telling you who you are

— Beyoncé

The Concept of Beauty

People place great value on physical attributes but in reality, these attributes do not define a person’s beauty. Outward beauty is a gift which cannot be created by us. But Most people also agree that beauty is skin deep. That is inner qualities like kindness, goodness, truthfulness is what make a person beautiful than mere physical appearance.

Yet youngsters today give a lot of importance to what other people think about them. So, they spend considerable time and money on improving their looks. They are never satisfied with images they see of themselves in the mirror and are constantly finding faults with their own appearance. As a result, they are at the mercy of others to pass judgement on their looks.

Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.

— Maya Angelou

Self -Acceptance is the Key

When children are taught that physical beauty is superficial and not as important as a person’s intellectual, emotional and spiritual qualities, the concept of beauty can change. It must start with self-acceptance. So much of heartache, disappointment and depression can be avoided if children are taught to accept their looks and work on improving qualities like punctuality, love, tolerance, from a young age.

They have to learn to love themselves first just the way they are and deserve to be treated with love and respect. There is so much more to each one of us than mere physical beauty. Circumstances arise in life which can be good or bad. How one responds, especially to adversity depends on one’s character and resolve. It depends on inner strength. Inner strength and resilience can be developed with conscious effort. When we consider challenges as opportunities we grow. The resolve to overcome any obstacle makes us strong.

Word Prompts Help Creativity/ Week 19-word Prompt "Mirror"

Brenda out friend and fellow writer and talented poet gives us a word prompt every week so that we can come up with creative responses. This week she gave us the word prompt “Mirrors”. An interesting word prompt and many of my HubPages friends have already submitted some awesome poems and stories. After much thought, I came up with this poem and I hope Brenda and my friends like it.

About this Poem

In this poem the father reassures the daughter who is not happy with the way she looks, when she sees her image in the mirror. He encourages her to look at herself from his eyes and see how beautiful she is. He tells her that the mirror reflects only the surface and she is much more than what it shows. He advises her to develop inner strength and concentrate on the important qualities that define a person. Her hard work will be rewarded and her dreams will come true when she develops these qualities and that is what is more important.

Not happy with the reflection in the Mirror

Not happy with the reflection in the Mirror

She sat in front of the mirror

Tears streaming down her face

She did not like what she saw

This is not me she cried.

The mirror lies said her dad

Scroll to Continue

Do not believe what it says

It reflects only the surface

You are more than what you see.

Just be yourself. Let people see the real, imperfect, flawed, quirky, weird, beautiful, and magical person that you are.

— Unknown

See yourself through my eyes

They reflect your true image

Truth shines in your eyes

Kindness illuminates your face.

Stop searching for beauty in mirrors

Be the mirror reflecting hope

and make the world a better place

Just by being you.

You are brave, you are talented

You are worthy and beautiful

Be the mirror that reflects light

And the candle that spreads radiance.

Your Life is valuable

Be grateful for what you have

Don’t be harsh on yourself

Others opinion matter the least.

Everything is within your power, and your power is within you.

— Janice Trachtman

Find strength within yourself

Love the person that you are

Your hard work will be rewarded

One day your dreams will come true.

Thanks Flourish for the visit and comments. A pleasant countenance, good behavior, good values make a person much more beautiful than mere physical attributes. There is much more to a person than the outward image reflected in the mirror.

FlourishAnyway from USA on July 06, 2021:

This is a very wholesome message. Beauty has seasons to it so we need to accept that outward appearance while wonderful to appreciate is not all there is.

Keep inspiring us with these wonderful word prompts every week. Take care, stay blessed.

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on July 04, 2021:

Sorry I couldn't get to this ealier, but I wanted to take my time to read it properly.

You did a fantastic job.

In your Poem Mirrors-See Beyond the Reflection you point out that the phrase "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" means that beauty alone means nothing without a person to appreciate it.

You tell us people put alot into their outward appearance, but true beauty is skin deep.

Those inner qualities are what makes a person beautiful.

Yet youngsters today care more about what others think and spend a considerable amount of money & time to fix their outward appearance.

You point out that children should be taught to respect their inner beauty and learn how to love themselves at an early age.

If we work on improving these qualities, it helps us to face adversities in life.

We are strong enough to handle obstacles & resolve them.

Then you share a magnificent quote about still waters & still minds.

Your poem, "Not happy with the reflection in the Mirror" you remind us to look past the reflection we see in the mirror.

To find our inner strength and become who we are on the inside.

To develop qualities that shine like a beacon of light for others to follow.

Your reward will be great, so stop searching for outward beauty.

Be the best person you can be. Stop being so hard on yourself.

Your dreams will one day come true.

Great work on this article.

I posted a link in the article already.
