Found in Old Papers

I came across some paperwork from years ago. In it was a story about an event that happened in my childhood.

I had received 4 tickets to a Cincinnati Reds Game for obtaining straight A's in high school.

This is a poem I put together from my notes. This took place on August 17, 1977.

Game Day with Dad

The day looks bright,

traveling my father, and two other friends

to a Cincinnati Reds Baseball game,

when an unexpected trip to Kentucky occurs.

We see the stadium

but somehow Dad misses the exit,

and before we know it

we cross over the Ohio River,

where a sign welcomes us to Kentucky.

Scroll to Continue

Suddenly we find ourselves

on a toll road

thinking we are headed back to Ohio,

but the sign says, “Welcome to Newport Kentucky.“

Finally, Dad stops

and asks for directions,

getting us there before the first inning

since there's a rain delay.

It's full of action,

Pete Rose & Dan Driessen both make homeruns,

then Johnny Bench

flings the bat out of his hand

clear to first base.

They say all's well that ends well,

and I'm smiling

for the Reds win

with a 5 – 1 score.

We arrive home at 2:15 a.m.

finding my older brother pacing the floor,

since Mom was at work

and he had no ideal where we were.

My dog, King

must have missed me too

for I felt his paws jump on my bed

and lay down

protecting me while I fell asleep.

Family Togetherness

The thing I remember most about my childhood is my family being together.

We usually ate breakfast, lunch & dinner as a family at the dining room table.

My parents always included us in their day.

They took time to play games with us each night before we adjourned to the living room as a family to watch television.

There was none of this separation like there is today.

Our television set only received local channels. If we were lucky that was 3 channels plus 2 uhf ones.

It depended on the weather & which direction the antenna was pointing.

Nothing like cable & satellite TV channels we watch today.

Childhood Memories - An Acrostic Poem

Childhood memories

Happiness lurks inside my heart

I recall those youthful days

Laughing at all those silly moments

Dreaming until my soul was content

Hoping each one would come true

Optimistic outlook plastered on my face

Open-hearted even as a kid

Dancing just to see a smile.

Nithya

Thank you.

I'm glad it spurred up some memories for you.

I think it's great to think about them.

The one about the ballgame...I came across notes like one woukd write in a diary...but for me just a notebook where I'd scribble thoughts.

I had almost forgotten about it.

And wow...I'd seen Johnny Bench & Pete Rose.

Have a great day

Beautiful poems expressing your childhood memories. I am glad that you all got to see the game. Your poems brought back memories of my childhood days.

Vidya,

Thank you.

I so enjoy your comments.

Actually the onky one I thought was worthy was the one Hubpages wouldn't let me reprint...saying it would be duplicate.

It has since been published elsewhere so I was abke to provide the link for it. " Family Times."

Have a great day or night gal.

Thank you! My friend described their life as quintessential freedom. Perfect description.

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on May 22, 2021:

AB

I just finished reading your story.

It is so heartfelt and touching.

I love how your parents were so free spirited and so much in love.

That takes a spevial kind of couple & love to survive all that traveling and moving from one place to another.

Thanks for reading my word prompt article and take care.

A B Williams from Central Florida on May 22, 2021:

Hi Brenda, I've just written about my childhood (moreso about my Parents love story) and then noticed your word prompt is 'childhood'. I look forward to going through and reading them.

Family togetherness seemed like plenty back then...now it doesn't exist.

Glad you enjoyed these ones.

The childhood memories are beautifully expressed in both your poems. I enjoyed reading it with a constant smile on my face. Such lovely and treasured memories with my parents and siblings too. Life was simple in those days, and family togetherness was enough to make people happy and content.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful response.

Ravi Rajan from Mumbai on May 22, 2021:

Wonderful Brenda. You have brought back my own childhood memories of playing with my dad, fighting with him ( if I lose !!!), and then doing it all over again every single day of my summer holidays. Thanks for sharing this heart-tugging poem.

My response to childhood

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on May 21, 2021:

Peggy

Thanks.

I'm glad we made it in time too.

My dad even walked to work & came home for lunch.

Families don't spend time together now like we did back then.

Plus we always knew to be home before those street lights came on.

Take care.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on May 21, 2021:

I am glad you made it to that game in time. Our family always ate together too. Those are some fun childhood memories.

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on May 21, 2021:

Pamela

Thank you.

It was a good memory to come across.

Kinda tells me age a bit with Johnny Bench.

I'm glad you had a similar experience.

It's always better when they win.

I went to see Cleveland Browns vs Cincinnati Bengals at the old stadium...it was a great game.

Cleveland won in the lasts 3 seconds.

Take care & have a nice day.

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on May 21, 2021:

Misbah

You are right.

I've had my Google maps take me to a vacant lot.

Have a great day.

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on May 21, 2021:

This poem tells a beautiful story of a precious memory. I got to go see the Cleveland Indians as a child and that was an exciting day. The only down side was they seldom won and didn't win that day.

I like your acrostic poem as well. I think this is an excellent response to your prompt.

Misbah Sheikh on May 21, 2021:

No worries, Brenda. Even my dad takes wrong turns while seeing the google map. And sometimes Google maps also misguides ... Lol...

I like your response to the prompt.

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on May 21, 2021:

Misbah

Thank you ...ot was not what I had planned.

Except for the one at the baseball game.

I honestly doubt that my Dad would have used those maps if he had them back then.

This wasn't the only time we went...and he missed it everytime. Lol.

He does use maps now, but he's 83.

Thanks for liking my attempt anyway.

Misbah Sheikh on May 21, 2021:

Both of the poems are so beautiful, Brenda. I guess you may have wondered writing the first poem what if there was google maps available at that time.. Lol... It would have saved a lot of time and energy of you, your friends and your dad of course.

The song "Blessed" is so nice. The acrostic poem is also very cute.

What a wonderful attempt, Brenda in response to Brenda Arledge word prompt ;)

Lots of Love

Blessings and Peace
