Poem: First Sign of Spring

I am a writer. My passion is poetry. I feel words connect people together and help us to understand the feelings we share.

Poem Summary

First sign of Spring is a short poem composed from a word prompt challenge. The prompt is "Spring".

It tells the story of how she anxiuosly awaits crocuses to peep through the snow in her flowerbeds.

Letting her know Spring is on the way.

First Sign of Spring

She anxiously pushes back the snow

covering her flowerbeds,

hoping to find crocuses

peeping their tiny heads through the barren soil,

alerting her of Spring.

Excitement rushes through her body

as she sees the reflection of a purple bloom,

amidst a tiny green sprout,

bringing us the first true sign

of the new season.

Tiny Gems

I absolutely look forward to these tiny plants each year.

I was raised with this folklore that usually seems to be true. Whenever I see them pop their little heads through the ground, I know Spring is not too far away.

The same goes for hyacinths and then tulips.

To include these gems in your flowerbed, plant the bulbs before the first chance of frost.

Misbah,

Thank you.

I absolutely adore crocuses.

I look forward to seeing them each year.

I actually write a different poem called The first demise of Winter https://letterpile.com/poetry/The-First-Demise-of-...

About this very thing.

I checked my flowerbeds yesterday & sure enough the little crocuses are peeking their little sprouts through the ground.

Spring is on the way!

Take care.

Misbah Sheikh from The World of Poets on February 27, 2021:

Linda,

Thank you.

That is great news!

Canada is not too far away from me.

I'll be checking my flowerbed later this week.

Have a great evening.

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on February 21, 2021:

John,

Thank you.

Usually when it comes to word prompts, I only write a short poem.

It leaves the option open later for me to add on to them.

I absolutely love crocuses. They are beautiful & that first sign of Spring makes me smile.

Take care and enjoy your evening.

John Hansen from Gondwana Land on February 21, 2021:

A short poem but you captured the moment and expectations of spring’s arrival. The crocus are lovely. Thanks for sharing the videos too, Brenda.

Linda Crampton from British Columbia, Canada on February 21, 2021:

I was pleased to see that you had created this article. This morning I noticed that the first crocus flower buds had emerged beside a walking trail that I use. I was very happy to see them.

Louise,

I must say...it's probably mine too.

I love getting outside & starting on my flowerbeds.

Thank you & enjoy the day.

Louise Powles from Norfolk, England on February 21, 2021:

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on February 21, 2021:

Rosina,

Thank you.

It is just a little poem which I can eventually expand if I decide too.

The object is to just get one's thoughts churning.

This one I wrote rather quickly.

Awe...to feel the air of Springtime sounds terrific.

Enjoy it.

They are one of my favorite flowers.

It honestly feels like they can touch a part of one's soul.

Thank you.
