Norman Borlaug grew up in Iowa on a small farm. He worked hard and also had an avid interest in sports. He learned from an early age that there were hungry people and his family always found a way to help the hungry in his town. His great-grandparents fled because of hunger when the potato famine hit during the 1840's. This knowledge of what it was like to be hungry set the stage for his coming life's work.

He began his education by taking classes in agriculture at Iowa State College. His hands-on educational activities taught Norman to spot diseases that were a problem for food crops. He soon discovered that when disease "hit the plants" then "hunger hit the people." Norman became involved with the Rockefeller Foundation, a large humanitarian organization. His work with the foundation was the stepping stone to helping the farmers in Mexico. He later went on to work in India and Pakistan to help with hunger. Norman became known as the "wheat whisperer" with his extensive work with learning to grow better wheat. His large contributions to the field of agriculture and helping to alleviate world hunger by teaching poor farmers all over the world earned him the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1970.
