How Do You Get Needed Supplies When You Live on an Island?

Tim Kleyn's creative picture book Set Sail for Pancakes! is a fun read for ages 5-8 with the adventure of acquiring supplies for cooking when you live on an island. A boat is a necessity for getting around when you live on an island and adventures with a storm can definitely be part of traveling around to other islands to gather supplies.

Margo really would like pancakes for breakfast. Grandpa is also hungry for pancakes. There is a problem to be solved. There is no milk, eggs, or flour to make the pancakes. Grandpa has the solution and he must travel to three other islands to get the needed ingredients. He has a map and his boat and he is all set to go around to get the ingredients. He first lands on Chicken Island and gathers the needed eggs. His next stop is Cow Island to acquire milk. Flour Island is the last stop in order to get the needed flour. The problem of an oncoming storm arises while they are on Flour Island. They board their boat and the oncoming storm becomes very frightening. Grandpa eases Margo's fright with a creative use of a banana. They finally arrive home and they also bring with them a surprise ingredient for the delicious pancakes.

Tim Kleyn also used his talents as an illustrator to provide illustrations for his book. The illustrations are engaging with details of the story.

Set Sail for Pancakes! was published by Viking Press, a division of Penguin/Random House and has an ISBN of 978-0-593-40429-4.

*Call attention to the wheat field when they arrive at Flour Island.

*What was the surprise island that Margo and her grandpa landed on just after the storm? What was the surprise ingredient that they gathered for the pancakes?
