When I was young

Do you believe that one day in my life, I once became a librarian's enemy number one?

Back in my early elementary days. I am one of those students who go to the library and treat my librarian angry and more angrier.

What are those who makes her angry?

First, as I enter, my shoes was messy. Then, I go within the aile of each shelves and run with a noise. I pulled some of the books away from the shelves and return to different shelve. Another one, I tear some of the pages. No wonder those things will make my librarian got mad at me.

Until one day, my librarian will not going to tolerate anymore my wrong doings. She pulled me, near to her table. She tooked her meter stick and then slap my fingers.

Of course, my immediate reaction was to cry out loud. Burst into tears and said "One day, if I will become a librarian, I will not hurt the students!"

I said that but I did not mean that. And the following day, I did not visit the library anymore. I do not want to see my irate librarian. I do not want to be slap again.

I said to myself, I will not go to the library for the rest of my life.

Need to go back in the library

Since elementary, after that slapping incident, I did not come to the library anymore. I was afraid to go back.

I manage not to go to the library until second year high school. I only instructed my classmates to borrow some books. They will use their own library cards and I will borrow it when we were in the classroom.

Until such time in the third year, I have no choice but to follow my English teacher instruction. It just so happen that she was also the Assistant Librarian of the school. Every time, she's not ready to teach her lesson, she will obliged us to go to the library and read something. Read a literature that will enhance our English language. Crazy but I have no reason to object.

That first day to step again was one funny moment in my end. As I entered the library, I bumped my head at the door. I did not know what happened because I was the last person to enter from our class that time. My classmates laugh at me. At that point of time, I want to back out. I do not want to go inside the library. But before I did that, my English teacher was at my back and she pushed me then say "Where are you going?"

"I want to go to the restroom mam?" With a question in my mind if I really need to go to the restroom.

"No, go inside the library!" She just said that makes me more frightened.

Then in few minutes, my classmates were looking at me. Some of them were murmuring. Some were laughing without noise. Some were just staring like an animals. Crazy to think that I was forced to find my chair.

The English teacher said "Okay, go find one book that you have to read and we will have a graded recitation tomorrow!"

My classmates stand and go to different shelves. However in my case, I did not stand. I do not know that time, how to stand. How to manage to go to the shelve.

In after few minutes, my classmates have their book picked and started to read. Me, nothing. My English teacher grab one Encyclopedia volume and placed in my table. I was shocked that time. I am thinking if I will not follow, a librarian will slap my fingers again.

With tension, I easily opened the Encyclopedia then started to read. No idea, if I did understood what I've read however I manage to picked some important words. I just write some of those words.

And that's the start my story.

My ring finger. The result of slapping

Taking Librarianship

After that third year high school reading activity, I manage to go back always in the library. And in that case, I included Bachelor of Library and Information Science as one of the priority programs to choose in enrolling college.

And then, I enrolled that program. Although, my first choice was Bachelor of Arts in Journalism but the schedule that time was night time. And my father did not allow me to enroll with my first choice. I manage to enroll my second choice which is about Librarianship.

Then after four years, I graduated with that program. Although, I am working in the school library that time after graduation however not considering as a librarian yet because I was not able to pass the Licensure Examination before. It took me seven years before I passed.

I am now a Librarian

After passing the Librarian's Licensure Examination in 2005, I manage to go back to the librarian who happens to slapped my fingers just to inform her that I am now a Librarian.

I also did go back to my Reading teacher who forced me to enter the library to inform also that I am now a librarian.

I'm sorry that you had that early bad experience at a library. I worked as a librarian and we tried hard to make our library welcoming for all.

I'm glad you grew to value the library and choose it as a career.

Thank you for sharing this Luis. It is amazing that something that once scared you became your career. I am glad you went back and told the librarian and teacher about your career choice. I worked in a library for 10 years. At one stage started to study a librarianship course but didn't complete it. So, well done.

This story is definitely a story of conquering fears. We never know why things happen the way they do, but everything happens for a reason and look where you ended up after all that mischief and mishap... the library.

My elementary librarian then returned with a smile after stating I am now a Librarian. I do not know her reason of that smile, if she's happy or not.

DreamerMeg from Northern Ireland on November 16, 2019:

That must have been a severe caning to make you so frightened of the library. I am glad you were able to overcome the fear, even if it took your teacher pushing you through the entrance. How did the librarian who caned you react when you told her that you were now a librarian?
