My Inbred Cat

I have an inbred cat. His parents are brother and sister. From the same litter. They were adopted by my mother, who failed to spay or neuter them. A situation that was quickly remedied at my insistence.

My cat is black and white. When he was born he was round. Like a tiny little soccer ball. As a kitten he waddled when he walked. And he grew from a soccer ball into an itty bitty cow. Leading to the nickname of cow cat.

Cow cat came to live with me at nearly one year of age. After I decided that it was about time mother thinned out the herd. He was so gentle that I knew he would get along with my 16 year-old cranky kitty. I was right. He never even so much as hissed at her for the year they spent together. She, on the other hand, let him know more than once who was boss.

He loves his favorite chair

He loves his favorite chair

From the moment he was born I knew my cow cat was, let’s just say, special. He was always oddly attached to me, just like his daddy. I was happy to pay more attention to the waddly little cow cat than I did to the others. He seemed to need it. I have had cats all my life. But none like my cow cat. For one thing he is huge. Roughly 20 pounds. Not fat. Just a very big boy. I find it sweet that sometimes he likes to sleep on my pillow. Right above my head. But I wonder. If he rolls over, will he smother me in my sleep? And it is cute when jumps onto my chest at night. Except I do like breathing. Especially with an intact sternum.

Cow cat does not come when called. He is a stubborn kitty. Not so unusual for a cat. Cow cat does not do anything when called. Occasionally he will twitch an ear. Or look around very subtly. As if he is looking for the source of the sound that is coming from right behind him. I wonder sometimes if he knows he is being called. If he realizes that the silly human that is whistling and tapping the floor and making weird noises and gestures is trying to get his attention. By the looks of him, I wonder if he knows anything is going on at all. He just sits. So I have just given up calling him. I just go get him. And pick him up. And he goes limp. Why? I don’t know. Does he know? Perhaps.

Cow cat doesn't understand dinner. He doesn't come running at the sound of the can opener. If you are wondering. Cow cat can hear very well. He can smell too. And his eyesight is just fine. I have checked all three. I have seen these senses in action. But sometimes I wonder if something prevents them from all coming together like they should. I am reminded of this at dinner time. He learned very quickly the location where I set his food down. And he learned to proudly sit in his “food place” and wait for dinner. Not so strange. What is odd is what happens if dinner comes and he is not sitting “at ready”. Then it seems that he can’t quite figure things out. I know he is hungry. It’s past dinner time. And he was just begging for food. I know he can smell the food I just put down. I see him sniffing. I know he can hear me tapping the dish. His ears are twitching. Yet he cannot seem to locate his dinner. So I pick him up and set him at his dish. And he eats.

Cow cat is also a nervous eater. I have to be sure not too much dry food is left out. Should he be startled from his nap he will run to his dish and eat. If he is playing and the dish catches his eye, he will stop and eat. If he gets excited by something he sees or hears outside, you got it, he eats. It’s amazing he is not 40 pounds.

Cow cat watches a lot of TV too. Too much I think. And he really does watch . You can tell he really likes something when he sticks his nose closer to the screen. He loves commercials and bad reality TV. He does not swat at the images like other cats. He doesn’t even move from the couch. Unless it is to run. Oh yes. Images of dogs and, oddly enough, marathon runners have sent him running at top speed to hide in a bedroom. Eventually he will come out and sit at the end of the hall. Once he is sure it is safe, its back to the couch.

Cow Cat hates snow but loves that chair. I did eventually bring him inside!

Cow Cat hates snow but loves that chair. I did eventually bring him inside!

Cow Cat Almost Had a Friend

Cow cat is determined. If that is the word for it. He has sat and stared at the same patch of foliage for hours. Literally. Barely moving. Even when called. Not a twitch. Until he got hungry and came in for dinner. And then back to the very same spot for another 2 hours. What was he looking at? I have no idea. All I can assume is that something, a chipmunk perhaps, ran into the patch and cow cat was waiting for him. And waiting. And waiting. Until it got dark. And he came inside. Cow cat will sit under the bird feeder for a whole afternoon. Crouched as low as he can get. As if that will hide his huge black and white body. I can tell that he wants to catch a squirrel more than anything. Do you suppose he realizes that at some point he will have to move if he is going to get it? I am sure he does. He is waiting for the perfect moment. He will be waiting for hours. Cow cat’s sitting habit that I really can’t figure out happens in my garage. He sits on the roof of my car. He loves that spot. Maybe there are mice that run around and that is a good vantage point. But how on earth is he going to catch one from up there? Or maybe he is just thinking. Meditating even. Maybe he is The Fool on The Hill, only he is the cat on my car. Only cow cat knows. Or does he?

At his latest trip to the Vet cow cat displayed some of his very special behavior. He got a new vaccine. No needle. It uses compressed air. And it made a very loud sound right on his rump. Cow cat didn’t even jump. He did, however, calmly look around in front of him for the source of the sound. The Vet never saw a cat react like that. I mentioned that he is a bit odd. And that his parents are litter mates. I asked if this could have anything to do with it. He said it could be possible. Hard to tell.
The vet asked me if he is functional and if he is happy. And I sad that he is. And I love him. To which the Vet responded “Well, that’s all that matters.” And he’s one hundred percent right.

FlourishAnyway - yes. cow cat is a big boy, yet he jumps like crazy. he just now figured out how to reach the bird feeder. I had to raise it up. only took him a year :) Bay Bay sounds like such a sweetie. Cow would love him! It is amazing how unique each and every cat is. The oddballs always seem to find a special place in out hearts.... thank you for stopping by.

FlourishAnyway from USA on September 20, 2013:

Cute hub. Cow Cat is beautiful and so huge! I think I have his kindred spirit. We don't know about the parentage because mine was a stray kitten. Bay Bay is only 2 years old but is deaf, doesn't see well from cataracts, and he has a lot of problems thinking. We have to help him decide things, like whether it's time to eat or go into his bedroom at night. He rough plays with the other cats and doesn't seem to understand when they are annoyed with him. But we love him immensely.

Dana Strang (author) from Ohio on March 31, 2013:

AdmiralJim - Thanks for stoppong by to read about my wacky cat. He has developed a few new quirks! So cute... I never thought about fictionalizing him and making a series. I love that idea. I am going to start making notes. Maybe something will come of it. :)

James from North West England on March 31, 2013:

Cats are full of strange idiosyncrasies, and this was an endearing account of your affectionately named 'cat cow'.

I'd love to see him fictionalised, I think he'd be the perfect centrepiece for something surreal, possibly in an anthropomorphic role.

Lovely writing. :)

Dana Strang (author) from Ohio on March 17, 2013:

jcressler - Cats are so fantastically full of personality. And sometimes the personality is a little left of center! ... I would love to meet your daddycat. He sounds fun. It's funny, I call my Cow Cat;s father daddycat!

James E Cressler from Orlando, Florida on March 16, 2013:

I love my daddycat, but I have learning and accept that he is OCD and often is on a dry drunk. All cats could use prozac!

Dana Strang (author) from Ohio on January 15, 2013:

Hello Mary!

He did fall off his chair, of course. He is such a goof! I thik he looks so miserable in the photo in the snow, but he is the dummy that didn't know enough to come inside! He eventually caught on...

Everyone should have a cat. They are such interesting little creatures.... Your "snobby schnauzer" would certainly hate to share somebody as wonderful as you, and would probably dislike kitty pounces! :)

Thanks for the votes!

Mary Hyatt from Florida on January 15, 2013:

I would say your inbred cat is "different". I love your photos, especially the one of the cat sleeping on the back of a chair! That must be hard to do without falling!

This Hub make me want to go out and get a cat. My snobby schnauzer would not go for that, though She wouldn't want to share her house.

Voted this UP, etc.

Thomas Byers from East Coast , United States on August 21, 2012:

A really great Hub. Really great. I loved it. He's about the same size and color of one I had in New York City that was killed because of a pigeon. He loved to play on the fire escape and I lived on the 9th floor of a 15 story building. Sox while I was trying to get him to come in chased a pigeon off the 14th floor fire escape. He was killed on impact.

But he was the most intelligent cat I ever had. He would watch TV for hours and would turn it off when he was through. If he forgot all I had to say was Sox TV and he would go turn it off. He would also turn lights off and on and gave the two poodles down the hall a rough time. He would run out the cat hole in the bottom of the door and get them to try to chase him back through it. He was of course waiting for the first dog through the hole and would slap it silly. You should have seen a poodle try to turn around on a dime. LOL.

He had several soft balls and he loved to play fetch for as long as anyone would thrown the balls. I miss him a lot because he was so smart. I got him in Vermont from a farm with a basket of kittens and I kept him for 8 years. Some day I may try to get another but it would take a lot to be as smart as Sox.

Thanks for you r Hub it made me think of Sox the Wonder Cat.

MissyGear on August 21, 2012:

My cats hate those needle free vaccines. They will put up with almost anything until that thing goes off. Then they make the most ungodly sounds I've ever heard and try to flee as though their very lives depend on it.

Your cat reminds me a bit of my first cat Mama Cat. She was so fat we thought she was pregnant, so we just called her Mama. The name stuck and so did she. She was a special cat too, but that's what makes them so lovable.

ThoughtSandwiches from Reno, Nevada on August 21, 2012:

Awww...cute little (actually big) incest kitty. Cow cat is awesome and so are you for being so patient with him! I like to think when he's staring off into space and we are not sure what's going on in between those twitching ears of his that maybe he's mentally practicing Latin or calculus or something. You just never know...

Great story!

Nellieanna - Cow cat is certainly spcecial/ He just had his yearly vet visit and he was such a good boy. Everyone was so amazed...

What an adorable story of Winky and his kitten girlfriend. Unfortunaletly we sometimes forget how young cats can have their first litter! That is whi it is important to spay and neuter early. I hope the kittens did well.

Nellieanna Hay from TEXAS on August 02, 2012:

Cow Cat is adorable. I'm convinced that black and white cats are special. They are kind of the Labrador Retrievers of the feline world; - such gentle beings.

I lived on a farm once where there were a number of cats. The black and white male cat, Winky, took a young female kitten under his wing as her mentor. They were always together like friends. They weren't spayed, though, and she became pregnant with his kittens. She was barely more than a kitten herself, and had no idea how to be a mama, and in fact - deserted them. So Winky looked after them. We fed them when she wouldn't nurse them, but he seemed to know they needed bonding they'd missed with their mother, so he would lie down & let them pretend to nurse! It was amazing.

Dana Strang (author) from Ohio on August 01, 2012:

Mr Archer - you are absolutely right about cats personalities. so storng, and each so unique. I had a cat once that loved to sit on paper - newspapers, wrapping paper, even notebooks. He also loved to sit inside brown paper bags. Isn't it amazing the odd things that pets do? :)

Mr Archer from Missouri on July 31, 2012:

Cat's have such personality. Each one is their own "person". We have one, a stray that adopted us, that is so old and arthitic, yet wants to lay on the paper when my wife reads it. She lays the paper on the floor in front of her chair, and leans over to read. Spooky shuffles over and lays down right on the paper, drawing her front paws up and looking like a seal. My wife gently pushed her away, sliding her a couple of feet across the floor. Spooky gets up and shuffles right back. Time after time after time. That is the only play she will participate in. But when she wants to do it, she does it. Great hub, and funny. Good job!

Cow Cat. Awesome. We had a black and white cat that was orphaned waay too early and she was a foster kitty by the time she was 5 weeks old. Her name was Zoe, but...teehee...we nicknamed her Bastard Cat. It was actually a complimentary name - she didn't put up with any nonsense from humans or other animals. Even our big wolf-hybrid mix didn't mess with her. We had a big black cat come along and he fell in love with her. We originally named him Frodo, but then after we saw him chasing Zoe, we started calling him Pepe...Pepe Le Chat. Now, his new nickname is JonCougar Meloncat because he is very large and very round. Haha. Thanks for the awesome read. Hubhugs!

Good work.

prairieprincess - I bet Cow Cat would love Jo. Or he would totally ignore her. He goes one way or the other :)

Glad you liked the hub, I will pass the news along to my kitty. He will be very pleased.

Sharilee Swaity from Canada on May 15, 2012:

Dana, this is so sweet. Your kitty reminds me of my cat, Jo. We laugh and say she's not the smartest kitty but she is the sweetest. It's so awesome that your Cow Cat has a human that loves him and accepts for who he is. And it sounds like you have a lot of fun with him. Loved this hub!

Lucky Cats - Thanks a million! He really is a blessing to have. Such a sweet little friend. His latest thing is that he now loves my boyfriend. He is always so happy to see him. When he comes to visit Cow Cat has to sit on the sofa with us and demands all of the attention. Its too cute.

Dana Strang (author) from Ohio on May 15, 2012:

Linda- Sometimes I think he wants to be a cat supermodel. He loves to be groomed and photographed. What a goof.

UP Funny Awesome Beautiful and Interesting. Cow Cat is lucky to have you, and you are lucky to have him. Beautiful picture, too.

Awwww how sweet!! I like how you displayed Cow cats frontal and one backside! Too cute! I could honestly say this is the first time I ever read a story about an inbred cat!:))

Jools99 - Thanks for the vote up! ... Cow cat really is a sweetheart. Lately, he gets so excited when my boyfiend comes over because he loves to sit on the sofa with us. It is so cute!

Jools Hogg from North-East UK on May 12, 2012:

Aw, Cow Cat sounds like a right little character but very loveable. I really enjoyed this article.

Voted up.

Hyphenbird - Thanks for reading. This has turned into quite a popular little hub. Perhaps I should tell cow cat he is a celebrity. Though I don't kkow that I should feed his ego. He definitely knows he's pretty. He hates to be wet, or dirty, and will beg to be brushed. What a diva! :)

Brenda Barnes from America-Broken But Still Beautiful on May 01, 2012:

Cow cat sounds like a confused little fellow. I like the idea of trying natural herbs as one Hubber suggested. But you take such great care of him that he is happy and healthy. That really is all that matters. He sure is pretty.

Patty - wow. Thanks so much. It was fun to write. HubPages is my first attempt at writing and I am enjoying the experience. Hoping I can turn it into something "real".

What a delightful hub you have a lovely flowing style that is a joy to read thank you so much for sharing your special (in all ways) cat with us. Voted up and hit funny and interesting too :-D

cookies - Thanks! I was just reminded of this hub at dinner tonight. Cow cat loves beef and I shared some of my steak with him at dinner. He could smell it and was begging. So I caved in. I hand fed him a tiny piece and I put the rest on the chair he was sitting in. He saw me put it down. Well, he sat on it! And then begged for more. I finally got him to eat what I gave him after positioning him properly. What a goof!

Cow cat is unique, like every animal. Reminds me of the last cat I had - he was a rather large cat as well and loved to eat. He didn't watch a lot of TV because I don't but he did watch when the opportunity presented itself. My cat would come when called though and was pretty smart. I had to chuckle when you wrote that Cow cat runs to his food bowl when he wakes from a nap - I do the same thing! Kisses to Cow cat! Bless his big heart!
