Is Textbroker legit?
Textbroker is a writing site that pays per word count. The pay depends on the quality of your work, which is rated by the editors at Textbroker. Clients give descriptions of what they want in an article and you have a selection of articles to choose from. You write the article, and if they are happy with the article they will accept the article and you will get paid. If they are not happy with the article, they will ask you to revise. And YES Textbroker is a completely legitimate way to make fast cash- although the work may seem tedious, you have a lot of earning potential. Textbroker is not a scam.
What's the deal with Textbroker and taxes?
Welp- Textbroker does not take out taxes from your pay. Textbroker is required to tell the IRS every person who makes over $600 on the site. So, if you plan on trying to use this site as a source of income- then you need to fill out a W-9 form and apply for an Employer Identification Number (you can apply for this online). YOU are responsible for sending your income tax to the IRS.
What else do I have to send in to Textbroker?
You have to prove you are a US citizen. There has been a rise in the amount of people who've applied to Textbroker and were not a US citizen. It is now required that anyone signing up for Textbroker send in a copy of their driver license. You can block out sensitive information.
Why has my Textbroker account been put on hold?
Luckily, this only happens once. After you have written your first 5 articles, Textbroker is going to put your account on hold. This hold prevents you from writing more articles until the hold is lifted (the maximum time for the hold is 2 weeks). They will lift the hold once they have rated all of your articles, so they can either up or lower your initial rating. *They cannot rate your articles until all of them have been accepted by the client.
How does the Textbroker payouts work?
In order to get paid by Textbroker, you must have a Paypal account. You are paid immediately after your article is accepted by the client, as I said before. You can request your pay out as long as your Textbroker account has at least $10. You can even get paid every week if you want- but you must request your pay-outs by the end of Thursday night in order to get paid by the end of the day on Friday.
How responsive is the Textbroker staff?
The responses from the staff are informative and fast. They are very polite and actually will read your emails. The response is not just some pre-typed text. I sent them a email and usually get a response with 3-4 hours. (Maybe that's just my luck!)
What is the Textbroker pay rate?
Pay rates at Textbroker depend on your quality level. This rating is given to you by Textbroker editors.
Here is the scale:
1 Star- You're Banned
2 Stars- $0.007 per word
3 Stars- $0.01 per word
4 Stars- $0.014 per word
5 Stars- $0.05 per word
So if you wrote a 100 word article, you would receive:
2 Stars - $0.70
3 Stars- $1.00
4 Stars- $1.40
5 Stars- $5.00
*2-star and 3-star writers do not have a lot of options for work. Most clients are looking for writers of 4-star level or higher. You cannot make a living being a 3-star writer at Textbroker.
How do you get a 5 star level rating and keep it?
Your writing style and tone must be pleasing and your grammar must be perfect. And stay perfect. In fact, if you make any grammatical mistakes the first 2 months you have the 5-star level, you will demoted to 4-star. You must have at least 10 articles at the 4-star level and pass Textbroker's Proofreading Test.
What else is on Textbroker?
You can select the articles you want to write, but there are other writing options offered by the Textbroker site. You can have:
DirectOrders: which involves a client requesting you to write for them exclusively. You can set your price per word.
TeamOrder: which involves you joining a writing team on Textbroker and the client sets the price per word. You know the price per word before joining the group. There is no limit to the number of teams you join.
ExpertOrders: These orders are harder to get because this requires you to have specialized knowledge. You get paid $0.20 per word. (That's $20 for a 100 word article)
Is Textbroker worth it?
This really depends on you. If you want to make good money from Textbroker, you must be good at researching and writing and outputting articles quickly. You can only select one article at a time. So you must complete the article you have opened, in order to move onto the next one. Textbroker is not a scam site. Yes, they actually pay you. If you are not a fast writer/worker, that can be changed. It will take practice. Set goals for yourself and watch your time.
Also, if you can't see yourself writing technical articles Textbroker shouldn't be in the cards for you. If you're good at researching though, this shouldn't be a huge issue.

I’ve had an account with Textbroker for quite a while, but haven’t done any work for them for a couple of months. I did have a regular client through Direct Orders, which was great, but when that one stopped, I found that going back to the usual sort of work on offer wasn’t very interesting. Good Hub, voted up.

These are very interesting details that I didn't know about, even though I actually have an account at Textbroker. I had a hard time finding assignments there. I ended up doing work at Blogmutt, which is pretty good. But the freelance thing can be a lot of work for not much pay.

Also- you can post your own writing gigs on there for some extra cash. :) Good luck!

Ok - Thanks... I'll check out the Fiverr site too..

I really need to update this. The Textbroker site has occasionally categories missing (sometimes only showing 4 categories!) and, their number of jobs available to level 3 has dropped tremendously. Wondering if there is some sort of glitch.
And about monetizing, something easy you can try- have you ever heard of Fiverr.com? Real people offer services or other things for just $5. I have had some luck with them. There are many trusted sellers that can help boost your traffic and increase your earnings. Weed through the comments and see what others say about them and don't be afraid to ask them questions. I've used some services on Fiverr for my traffic here at HubPages- I do not regret it and have found the services to be a great value. I've used my analytics account to determine what kind of traffic it was- couldn't be more pleased. You'd be surprised what $5 can get ya!
My best recommendation to you is to build up your writing on HubPages and show that you consistently publish engaging content and then apply to the Apprentice program. They teach you a lot about online writing and SEO. You'd be very successful with the program! It's 6 months- and after my 6 months, I've found my earnings are (ever-so-slowly) increasing.

I have never heard of the site before.. I am looking for ways to get my writing out there in the hopes of getting an agent for a novel I'm working on.. I'd love to be able to make a living at writing but it is not an easy thing to do.. Especially while working full time. It is nice to know that there are other options. I am still trying to get my Google AdSense set up on here so I can monetize my site.. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have written a few articles for them and they are a legitimate company to work. One negative that I see so far, is that the pay is really low for the amount of research that goes into writing some of the articles. Another thing, is that they don't have much work right now in the assignments.
Shasta Matova from USA on November 02, 2013:
This is a good critique of Textbroker. I realized that I needed to write articles quickly in order to get any money on the site, but when I included the time it took to just find an article I wanted to write, I realized how abysmal my hourly rate of pay was.
Ceres Schwarz on November 01, 2013:
Interesting hub. I've heard of Textbroker before. It is good to know that it is not a scam and that you actually get paid. It's also good to note that the staff of Textbroker actually take the time to read and answer any e-mails they might get though the pay rates don't seem all that high at all and some people might think it's not worth it while some might not mind at all.

You might get bored pretty fast- it's nothing exciting. But it is nice to get money that quickly!
