Hubpage Anniversary

I just arrived at my 12th anniversary at Hubpages. I have seen many people come and go, but there are still some authors who have chosen to stay. Through the years new friends have arrived. I have wonderful friends from around the world. I never thought I would be able to connect with so many people worldwide.

Authors like cats because they are such quiet, lovable, wise creatures, and cats like authors for the same reasons.

A Good Life

I continue to write, mostly medical articles since I was an RN, and I can help people be more aware of symptoms of various medical problems. Many people have shared their problems with me, and I appreciate all the support and friendships that have occurred over the years. I typically only write one or two articles a week, as medical articles require research and are time consuming.

I wasn’t sure what to write for this anniversary. However, I got thinking about something that occurred when I was young. I had two loving parents. We played board games and we went on picnics in the summer. My mother made great potato salad, while my dad cooked on the grill. We didn’t have a lot of money, but we had love.

Birthday Party

The one thing my sister and I complained about was not having a cat or dog. Both of my parents worked, and they felt we couldn’t train a pet. Once we got a kitten, but a few days later they said the cat had to go. My mother had several African violet plants, and the kitten tore them up. The day the kitten was leaving was upsetting for us. My sister pretended to be sick, and she stayed home from school with many tears.

For my 16th birthday I was allowed to have a slumber party. I invited all my friends. They knew I wanted a pet so badly, so they chipped their money together. They got me a canary, along with bird seed and the cage. I was allowed to have the bird. I was so surprised!

My Precious Canary

For my 16th birthday I was allowed to have a slumber party. I invited all my friends. They knew I wanted a pet so badly, so they chipped their money together. They got me a canary, along with bird seed and the cage. I was allowed to have a bird. I was so surprised.

Please, Can We Have a Pet

My sister and I begged for a sweet pet

We didn’t get one, we were upset

Both parents working, they said no

We didn’t weep, we took it like a pro

Finally one day we got a pretty cat

A week later my parents wanted to chat

The little cat tore up my mother’s plants

We knew we had trouble with a glance

They said our cat just had to go

Heartbreaking news, we said no

Our parents rule, we thought too strict

Then my sister pretended to be sick

My sister cried a lot, but it didn’t help

Loving that cat, she couldn’t help herself

I told my friends how sad we both were

They cooked up a plan causing a stir

A birthday slumber party was the plan

I invited friends, the whole darn clan

They chipped in together for a gift

Getting a dog or cat was a myth

Arriving finally the pajama party

All were excited, all were hearty

A pretty canary who sang so sweet

Bird seed and cage made it complete

My sweet friends gave us our pet

The singing canary, we were all set

A dog or cat was not meant to be

We were still happy don’t you see

Hi Rinita,

The canary was a wonderful surprise, but as an adult I have always had dogs and cats. I love pets.

I am glad you liked the poem, and I certainly appreciate your comments.

Blessings!

What a sweet story and a lovely little poem. I'm glad you finally got the canary. Did you get any more pets once you grew up?

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on August 17, 2021:

Hi Shauna,

I love your childhood memory. I remember garter belts and fishnet stockings, but my mother would not have allowed those either. That is a great memory!

You make a difference as well. We all have our parts to play.

I appreciate your comments, always!

Thank you. Stay safe and healthy!

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on August 17, 2021:

Happy Anniversary, Pamela!

Your childhood story is touching and brought to mind a birthday story of my own.

When I was about nine or ten, I wanted fishnet stockings. My mother said absolutely not! So I coerced one of my friends to buy me a pair for my birthday. Needless to say, my mother was livid when I opened the gift during my birthday party. Back then, fishnets were worn with a garter belt. My mother simply thought I was too young and that the getup was not becoming of a young girl. Now I can't even remember whether or not she let me keep them. I'm thinking not!

And, yes my friend, your presence here on HP absolutely makes a difference! I hope you stick around for a long, long time.

Congratulations on your Hubiversary. 12 years is not something to be scoffed at. You were probably one of the founding members. I came along in 2013, so I just passed year 8 in April. Everything joyful comes in twelves, twelve tribes, twelve apostles, etc. etc., so I predict a great hubbing year for you.

Hi Lora,

I hope that the medical articles have helped people who are suffering from various health problems,

I was loved even though sometimes life was hard or when we didn't like our parent's decisions. We were loved. I agree that money and/or gifts do not take the place of love.

I am happy that I have written for Hupages for the past 12 years, as I have made mane friends.

Thank you for your vey thoughtful comments.

Lora Hollings on August 14, 2021:

Your article is a beautiful tribute to your dedicated writing at hubpages for twelve years. I think many people have found your articles related to health to be very enlightening, Pamela. I know that I have and appreciate you sharing this knowledge with us. I also enjoyed your poem. You are so right when you say that you had the most precious gift of all- growing up and that is to be loved by your parents. Money cannot possibly take the place of love.

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on August 14, 2021:

Hi Rosina,

Do not worry if you are late as you did respond, and I consider you a good friend. I appreciate the congratulations.

I couldn't find a good first song that fit the poem and story but I thought Dancing Queen fit the slumber party when I got my canary,

Thank you so much for your comments, Rosina. They are always appreciated. I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Rosina S Khan on August 14, 2021:

Congrats Pamela on your 12th HubPages Anniversary. I really loved your poem about having a pet as a canary when a dog or cat was not possible during your childhood. Plus I really enjoyed "Dancing Queen" by ABBA sisters, one of my favorite bands.

Sorry Pamela I am again late to respond. We had some family problems and I had to hold long discussions with my Mom. I had my lunch after 4 pm and that's how I got behind schedule.

Your presence means a lot to us and we would like you to keep writing both poems and medical articles. We really enjoy them.

This article was great too and I enjoyed it too. Thanks for sharing.

Sp Greaney from Ireland on August 14, 2021:

Congrats on being here for 12 years Pamela. You had a really great group of friends there and that was such a sweet thing that they did for you both. Parents can be stubborn sometimes. The poem is such a sweet tribute.

Hi Linda,

This was a fun article to write for my Hubpage anniversary. I treasure our friendship, and I love the education you have given me about food.

I am glad you enjoyed my story. I have had cats throughout my adult life. I love them too.

I appreciate your comments, as always. I hope you are having a very good weekend!

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on August 14, 2021:

Hi Flourish,

We really were sad about not having a pet, so I have always had one as an adult. I was very excited about the canary though. My mother found the kitten a new home.

You are so right about pets and kids destroying things. They all need training!

I appreciate all of your comments. I hope you are having a great weekend.

Linda Lum from Washington State, USA on August 14, 2021:

Dear Pamela, happy 12th anniversary. I am truly glad that you are here on Hub Pages and that we have become friends. You certainly DO make a difference. I enjoyed your story, and the re-telling of it in verse was very sweet.

I have always had cats and can't imagine life without them.

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on August 14, 2021:

Hi Peggy,

I thought you had been here as long as I have. I really hope I have helped some people.

The canary was very special to me. I have had several dogs and cats as an adult, and I loved them all. It is nice that you grew up with them.

I attended several slumber parties too. They were fun and I'm glad it resurrected some memories for you as well.

Thank you so much for your comments. I always appreciate you and your wonderful articles.

I hope you are enjoying your weekend too.

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on August 14, 2021:

Hi Liza,

Thank you for the congratulations. I appreciate all of your comments.

I hope I have helped some readers. I enjoy writing on Hubpages.

Have a wonderful weekend!

FlourishAnyway from USA on August 14, 2021:

Aww it’s sad that your parents couldn’t be a little more tolerant of your sweet kitty. Pets sometimes destroy things just as kids do. I hope his like ended up okay. I’m glad you got a bird. Congratulations on your HP anniversary.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on August 14, 2021:

Hi Pamela,

We are some of the old-timers here on HP. I have also been here for 12 years. Amazing how time flies! Your medical articles are all so educational, and undoubtedly help many people.

Unlike you, my brothers and I grew up with dogs, cats, birds, and at one time even had an aquarium. My mother loved her canary singing from the cage in the kitchen. My brothers had parakeets. Our love of dogs and cats have continued. I am so glad that you got your canary as a gift from your friends.

I had a group of girls and we shared many slumber parties between us when we were in high school. Those were fun times. Thanks for sharing your memories and resurrecting some of mine about the slumber parties decades ago. Enjoy the balance of your weekend, Pamela.

Liza from USA on August 14, 2021:

Congratulations on your achievement, Pamela! I'm in my third year, and I love writing on Hub Pages. I am sure your contributions to HP have helped many readers out there. Have a wonderful weekend, and please celebrate your accomplishments!

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on August 14, 2021:

Hi Brenda,

I was quite happy about the canary as by this point I was just happy to finally have a pet. I really enjoyed that little bird for about 6 years.

Thank you for the congratulations and all you sweet words.

I have enjoyed all you beautiful poetry, and I am happy you are here also.

Have a wonderful weekend!

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on August 14, 2021:

Pamela

Happy "12th" Anniversary !

I'm so glad you are still here on Hubpages.

Your words of encouragement always help me.

In your poem you show us there is always another way.

If not a cat or dog, a bird will do just fine.

I can picture the kitty digging up the plant & the heartbreak you both felt.

Go Celebrate! Have a nice dinner.

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on August 14, 2021:

Hi Greg,

I love cats to, and I just lost one about a year ago that I was very attached to. He was the first male cat I ever had, and he would come when I called his name. I guess all pets can have their issues.

I am glad you appreciated my story. I am glad you hear a calm and kind voice. That is a beautiful compliment.

Thank you so much for all your nice words.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on August 14, 2021:

Hi Misbah,

Thank you for the congratulations. I hope my articles do help people, and I will keep writing. I enjoy it.

I appreciate your comments, Misbsah. You are so special, and I hope you continue to write also.

Blessings and much love to you.

greg cain from Moscow, Idaho, USA on August 14, 2021:

Pamela - you make a difference, without question. Yours is a calming and kind voice, which is always a pleasant add in any online forum. I especially loved the story of the cat, the canary and the sleepover. It was kind of tragic, I think, but with a happy ending--my favorite kind!

I'm a cat guy, have had cats all my life, but they are not without their issues!

Anyway...most importantly here: Congrats on your 12 wonderful years here on HP! I for one am glad you're here.

Good week.

Misbah Sheikh from The World of Rebels. on August 14, 2021:

Hi Peg,

I appreciate your friendship and the fact that we do interact with people from all over the world. It makes the world seem a bit smaller. Haha.

I'm glad you had a dog. I was thrilled when I got the canary. It was such a thoughtful gift from my 16 year old friends. I am glad you enjoyed this article.

I appreciate your comments. I hope you have a great weekend!

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on August 14, 2021:

Hi Bill,

I am glad to be a part of this community. Being a story teller is too cool for words, and so enjoyable,

I appreciate your thoughtful comments. Have a great weekend!

Peg Cole from North Dallas, Texas on August 14, 2021:

It is truly amazing that we, as writers here, can interact with people from all over the world. I'm glad to have met you and always learn something from your informative medical posts.

This one was delightful allowing a small glimpse into your childhood. We always had a dog but when we tried to add a cat into the family, the same thing happened to us as children. Mom did not appreciate the cat tearing up her indoor planter so she went back to the shelter. Glad that you got a chance to have a canary. They can be so much company.

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on August 14, 2021:

Happy Anniversary, my friend! I love your birthday story. You are a storyteller, as we all are, and isn't that just too cool for words? I'm glad you are a part of my community of writer friends.

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on August 14, 2021:

I am glad you enjoyed the poem, Miebakagh. Thank you.

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on August 14, 2021:

Your poem is a delight. That I forget to mention. Thanks again.

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on August 14, 2021:

Hi John,

I thought you had been here about the same as I, and I know Bill and Manatita have also been here a long time. I have missed some of those that left. I have had fun with the poetry, but I don't hold a candle to your skill. I am just having fun.

I appreciate your comments. Have a good weekend!

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on August 14, 2021:

Hi Miebakagh

We were loved, and my parents did put our safety first, as parents should. Sorry you had a bad experience with a cat. I have had cats and dogs as an adult, and I have found it takes a lot of time to train them, which would have been hard when I was a child.

Thank you so much for your nice comments, as always.

John Hansen from Gondwana Land on August 14, 2021:

Pamela, congratulations on 12 years at HubPages. I think I am approaching that too. Time goes so fast and many great writers have come and gone in that time. Here is to many more years of your wonderful medical articles, and now poems too.

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on August 14, 2021:

PamelaO, I wouldn't go for a cat, just for what she did to your mum's plants! My first child and son at 3 had similar encounter with a live cat. It was raw on his skin! I've watch canary birds sing and compete with each other in singing. It was a beautiful sight. I'm glad that your parents puts your safety and protection above harmful animals. Happy 12th anniversary, and happy hubbing! Thanks.

Pamela Oglesby (author) from Sunny Florida on August 14, 2021:

Hi Manatita,

Thank you for such sweet comments. I am glad you like my poem, and my account of an event in my early life.

Blessings and much love to you.

Pamela your presence does make a difference and your poem is excellent! I enjoyed your short account of early life as well. Congratulations on 12 years at Hub Pages. John and I are probably quite close. Much Love.
