Latarsha Woods is a first-time author, wife, and mother of three young daughters. Her new book My Melanin is Poppin’ on My Beautiful Brown Skin started out as a poem about self-acceptance and self-love that was developed into a children's book. The poem was written by Woods to answer her daughters when they questioned her about their different complexions.

Because the poem was a great encouragement for her own children, Woods wanted to share it with other children and their parents. Her book is a good resource for parents to encourage their own young children.

The Author's Goal

Because there have been many protests against racial injustice, the mother's goal was to uplift and encourage her children. It was after her oldest daughter began to ask questions about racism, and her second oldest asked why their complexions are different shades of brown skin even though they are sisters. Those questions opened the door for many other conversations about race and culture.

The illustrations in the book show that all three of Woods' daughters have different complexions. The daughters have biblical names: Destiny Grace, 12, Trinity Faith, 7, and Serenity Joy, 4. The characters in the book are based on the children's middle names: Grace, Faith, and Joy. The book celebrates the children's different features from the texture of their hair to the different shades of their brown complexion.

Woods says she has already seen a positive impact the book has made on her girls. She hopes it will empower other young black and brown boys and girls around the world.
