What Senior Women Do for Fun! (Hint: Travel, Anyone?)

Jeff has read profiles from 1,700 senior women from internet dating sites. He's written 4 articles on his experience, published on HubPages.

Golden Girls Just Want to Have Fun

As a 65-year old widower, I have been a member of two internet dating sites for the last six months. The 1,700+ dating suggestions I have received have come from a wide range of midwestern women, mostly white and all between 57 and 71 years of age. Unfortunately, I have not found my next romantic mate, but it has been a very educational experience for me, none the less.

I am absolutely amazed by the activities that senior women do - or want to do - for fun, excitement and self-improvement! I know more than my fair share of senior citizens - it comes with being on this Earth for 65 years - and I am frankly surprised by the recreational desires of older women. (Younger women: This is your probable future, so please, no snickering from the cheap seats.)

What do Older Women Want to Do for Fun?

Some senior women give out little information about themselves, either in photos or in writing. Their shyness is kind of endearing, but not particularly alluring for men.

On the other hand, there are two groups of women matches who tend to share a stunning amount of information about their amazing lives.

The smaller of these two groups are the women I call, "The Lady Jocks". These are women who seemingly do almost nothing relaxing, but supposedly engage constantly in: speed walking, running, bicycling, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, horseback riding, motorcycling, mountain climbing, tennis, golf, hiking, skydiving, calf roping, sailplane riding, bull riding, biathlons, triathlons, pentathlons, decathlons, scuba diving, pickleball (a messy and smelly sport), jet skiing, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, orienteering, skating, etc., etc. It exhausts me just reading about their exploits! I can't tell if these women are engaged in all of these activities because they enjoy them or if they just want to show off how athletic and tough they are. I don't know of any man who engages in such a wide range of physical exercises and activities as these women do! I start sweating profusely just looking at their proud action photographs and reading their breathless prose.

Almost All Senior Women Love to Travel

But, there is a third group that I call, "The Travel Junkies". In words and pictures, they always explain how many states that they have visited, which countries they have graced by their presence, the endless variety of worlds that they have seen, the strange foreign people they have met, the violent revolutions that they have survived, the quaint taverns they have become pickled in, the funny statues that they have been photographed with, etc. Some of these world-traveling women have been health professionals (i.e., nurses), but most are teachers and educators! North American teachers may be poorly paid (to their thinking), but they are the most well-traveled group of "poor people" in the entire world! I am not exaggerating! These educators have been everywhere and I don't get the impression that they visited every place known to mankind by hitch-hiking and sleeping in tiny pup tents! If you see a photograph of white tourists (with cell phones and cameras) tromping around in the jungles of the Amazon River basin ... or snowshoeing in the Antarctic ... or climbing up volcanoes in the wilds of Indonesia ... well, chances are good that the group consists mainly of teachers, professors and educationists (plus a few nurses). No one else has the time and money to travel frequently, like these people do! They might all have inherited money from a rich uncle ... ... or maybe ... just maybe ... teachers and educators are not as badly paid as they seem to believe.

Golden Girls in Paradise

So, what do the overwhelming majority of senior women look for in a single man? What would 'Paradise' be for most senior citizen women, in terms of relationships?

(1) APPEARANCE: They want single men who are in good physical condition, handsome in the face, clean with good hygiene. Knowledge of soap and deodorant use is a MUST. Guys who are willing to change their appearance for their woman is a plus - and they are willing to teach men about the proper use of a hair brush..

(2) WILLINGNESS TO TRAVEL: Traveling from one end of the Earth to the other is a major goal for many older women. Being able to pay for it - yourself - is a big plus for men. Being cheerfully willing to pay for his-and-her travel expenses is an even bigger plus. Willingness to frequently travel to the homes of a senior woman's children and grandchildren is a huge, non-negotiable MUST !

(3) WILLINGNESS & ABILITY TO BE ACTIVE: Engaging in the same physical activities as the senior woman is a HUGE plus. Physical disabilities and being unhealthy in any way are huge minuses for males. The man's ability to remain cheerful through the pain and fear, while engaging in life-threatening sports and activities, is sought after by many older women.

You may be asking yourself: "Jeff, what activities surprised you, that senior women don't seem to value or desire?". Stay tune for the second part of this series!

Men, remember to keep telling yourself, "I'm having fun! I'm having fun! If my girlfriend can do this, then I can do this! I'm having fun!"
