Louise Saved My Life
I was at K-mart walking around aimlessly with my son one afternoon. Things were bad; I needed to get out of the house for a while. It was summer; the weather was nice so my son, and I went for a little walk. We ended up at K-Mart of all places. The last place I should have been was at a store buying anything, but here I was and we had been through so much that I thought we both deserved something small. My son picked out a leap frog lap-top computer, his third one in the past few months, seems they are easier to break than one would think. If that’s what he wanted, I guess I could give him this one happy thing. We walked around the store for about an hour looking at everything and truly looking at nothing.
I had a lot on my mind. His father had left; my car blew up, so having no way to my job (an hour away) I had to give it up, and we were losing our house. Perfect. I tried different agencies, but no one could or would help us. We were going to be homeless by the end of this month. Having no real family to help me out, I was very scared. So like I said, with very little money left and no source of income, this was the last place our walk should have ended up.
I wandered into the book section and started looking over the titles, romance, romance, and more romance; the last thing I wanted to read. Then I stumbled upon a little book called You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay. Yeah right, my mind went over all the things that would be in this book. I put it down at least two times. However I decided that I really didn’t have anything to lose by reading a book that although will be dumb will at least have a positive message. I could use any form of positive that I could get right now
Louise L. Hay-Explaining How What We Think Affects Our Life
I never heard of her and assumed the book would tell me to eat a healthy diet, if you’re depressed to see a doctor, exercise, tell people you love them, blah blah. You know like all the other self-help books out there. Whoever this lady is she has never been in my position, how could she possibly know how to help me?
That night after putting my son to sleep, I got into bed and bawled. How could things of come to this? How could this be happening to me? What am I going to do? I cried for the next two hours.
I opened the book and found I had judged this little book too quickly. Her goal was not to fix my situations; it was to fix ME. To figure out why I put myself in this position, so I could get out of it. She taught me what we think about ourselves becomes the truth for us, every thought I have creates my future. This little lady knew more about me than I did. She did not allow me to blame it all on my son’s father. She made me take responsibility for the part I played in it. Without taking responsibilities for your actions, by blaming others for everything you will never learn from what you have done and how your reactions led to where you are now. People will do whatever it is that you allow them to, and you, and you alone own your reactions to what they do. Those reactions count more than what that person did to you. You either accept something or you don’t, but if you do accept it, then you cannot blame someone else. Powerful stuff, I had never taken such a hard look at myself before, Louise made me. Honestly, I probably never would have if I had not found her at K-mart that day.
I won’t go into the book anymore other than it completely 100 % changed my life. I have never read a self-help book before that day and never have read one by anyone else after. I will read and buy anything that this woman puts out.
I will admit that I have an extremely depressive personality and sometimes very negative views. I find it difficult to believe in anything and harder to believe that a book can make you better. I’m only being honest because if something like this can work for me who, besides all the problems, I was going through at that moment, has suffered from bipolar disorder and anxiety my whole life, and it worked for me; it is almost a given that it would help anyone else.
I will never be done reading this book, every so often I check back in with Louise when my mind and thoughts start going down the wrong path again. That’s the beauty of it, it is something that you will read for the rest of your life. I recommend it to Everyone. Thanks Louise!

Wow! You've been through quite a bit. Just goes to show that tough times don't always last, and we can get to the good ones if we don't allow the bad ones to bring us completely down. The book you mentioned sounds like a really good read. Glad to hear this particular book changed your life. Voted up, rated useful, shared.

Thank you happyboomernurse :) I love hearing from other Lousie "followers" lol. I am forever grateful that I found her book on that day, although I think it actually found me. Her teachings are so simple and easy to apply but so life changing, I re-read it anytime I need an extra boost here and there.

I love Louise Hay's attitude, teachings, books and lectures and have been a fan of hers for years. Sounds like you really "got" what she was saying in "You Can Heal Your Life" and immediately started applying it and that it's helped you make changes in your attitude, beliefs and life.
This is a great hub and I hope it inspires others to read her books. Voted up across the board except for funny.

I have a similar story to yours. I was working at a job where I was being constantly bullied by the men in the office. So many things in my life was going wrong and I was contemplating suicide. Then one day my voice was gone. I was only able to speak slightly above a whisper. There was no explanation for it. I saw a nose and throat specialist and was told that my vocal chord was paralyzed. He was dumbfounded because this sort of thing is rare and usually happens to elderly people whose bodies are shutting down. I was devestated and I was given no hope that my voice would ever return. Needless to say, everyone at my job thought I was faking. My cousin was getting married and treating me more like a servant and also could careless over what was happening to me. Just like you, I went to Target just feeling like I needed to treat myself. I stumbled across her book. Within six months my voice returned and months after that, I finally found the strength to leave my job. I don't talk to my cousin, in fact, I've eliminated everyone who was bringing me down. My life really did change. Right now, I'm going through some tough times financially and I haven't been doing positive affirmations in the way I used to do. I need to get back to doing that. Thank you for writing this hub. Voted up, useful and beautiful.
