Little Mouse - Poem
To My Children
My children are the testimony of my life and the reason I have such love and joy. As a mother I have loved and nurtured them, taught them and gave to them all I had to give.
When the time came, as difficult as it was, I watched them set sail on their own voyage of life, knowing each one has their own path to follow and their own dreams to fulfill.
Some of my poems are little snippets of their lives, moments in time that have warmed my heart. Little Mouse tells the story of my youngest daughter. Born into a poverty stricken Romania, right after their 1989 revolution, she was placed in an orphanage with hundreds of other newborns.
After piles of paperwork, six long weeks in this very foreign country, and hours of patiently waiting on Romania's adoption courts, I carried my three and a half month, under seven pound, little girl home to Germany.
As she grew, her love for cheese and a book about a little mouse's birthday inspired this poem about her.

This little poem is about my dear great niece Lilly. Her sweet smile melted my heart the first time I saw her. Perhaps, after reading these words, she will melt your heart too.
Little Mouse
A little mouse came one day,
From a land so poor and far away
She came to live within my house,
This tiny, little, baby mouse
Her hair was golden in the sun,
Her smile would capture everyone.
Her eyes would sparkle, her laugh would please,
And when you held her she gave such a squeeze.
This little mouse brought love and joy,
To every person, girl and boy
She loved to sing and dance and play,
Every morning was a bright new day.
When I would rock her every night,
The moon was shining high and bright.
Gazing down on my little mouse
I’d thank the Lord He blessed my house.
I prayed that she would someday know,
How blessed I was to watch her grow.
To love her as she grew each day
And swell with pride as she found her way
In the darkest hours of my days,
When I wandered in a desperate haze,
My little mouse was the only one
To breathe life and light into my sun
And when she’s grown and gone her way
I pray that she’ll look back some day
And know I gave her all I had
And she’ll be thankful and very glad

...I am but sincerely a child in your sweet poetic arms - such a wonderful sentiment - and though my eyes are open when I read these beautiful words - I really don't want to open them either - I just want to sit here and dream .........

My eyes are wet with tears, Miss_jkim. Not only are your little mouse story and poem lovely and touching, but I'm instantly reminded of a poem about a little mouse which my Dad used to read or quote to me often as I sat on his knee soaking up his attention.
In it the little mouse was too curious and didn't always listen to her elders.
Sure enough, she got too close to the cheese in the trap one day and SNAP, the trap came down. It was a typical German-heritage poem with strong moral to it and I loved hearing his resonant voice reciting it, though, of course - I hardly took it personally. But it stayed with me & I'm sure it's helped me back off from some mousetraps I could have just as easily gotten too close to! I think I have a copy of it written in his handwriting in my keepsakes. I must find and scan it.
Thanks for sharing yours with us! I love it too!

it makes me feel like a little boy again - and that's saying a lot because I'm 94 years old!
Probably one of my favorite poems here at hubpages for its joyful simplicity but also for its profound undertones of wisdom and poignancy and innocence!!!

Indeed, green tea-cher, that says it all.

From your poem I can see that both your daughter and yourself have benefited from a very special relationship. You have both been blessed. Very nice. I love the line " My little mouse was the only one to breathe light and life into my sun". This line says it all.
