It's Been Awhile Since You've Been Gone~ A Sister's Love

A Sister's Love

On March 23,1963, My little brother came into the world and we instantly became best friends.

In 2006, I said Good-bye to my little brother who lost his life to cancer. He left behind a legacy of love, fatherhood, devotion, and friendship.

Today, I celebrate not his death, but his life through words, music and sight.

Todd Edward Hunt, was an amazing man who gave his love unconditionally.

Happy Birthday little brother! I miss you!

It's Been Awhile Since You've Been Gone

It’s been awhile since you’ve been gone

But the yesterdays are clear~

I still can see your smile,

And your voice, I still can hear.

It’s been awhile since you’ve been gone

I thought I’d be the first~

To leave this earth and say goodbye

And let you quench the thirst.

It’s been awhile since you’ve been gone

My silence is no more~

My heart is missing you so much

Please walk through my front door.

It’s been awhile since you’ve been gone

And yet you’re here with me

On hard days when I need you most

Your spirit is the key

It’s been awhile since you’ve been gone

I remember that day of such

For on that last day that we spoke~

You said, “I love you, very much”

It’s been awhile since you’ve been gone

My precious baby brother

Best friends we are and will always be,

They’ll never be another.

It’s been awhile since you’ve been gone

Your birthday is today,

I’ll light a candle just for you

To celebrate your day.

Happy Birthday Todd, I love you!

Hi Lisa ~ How beautiful this tribute is to Todd. I do remember reading your Mom's writing about him too. Your poem is extremely touching and the video, although sad, is also adorable and something your family will continue to cherish. No doubt Todd is watching over you. Sending you big hugs!

Martie, my dearest "Hub-sister", your words are not only touching but so loving. Thank you for your sweet spirit. Toadd was an amazing man, he is missed constantly. I believe that the best way to accept, understand, move forward and remember is by always sharing with one another. Hugs to you my dear friend and God Bless. :)

Martie Coetser from South Africa on March 25, 2012:

My heart goes so out to you and your mother, Rustic. It must be absolutely awful living with the longing for one's brother or son.

And yet, it has to be done. There is no way out. This is a lovely tribute to Todd and an excellent way to ease the pain of longing...

Voted up and heart-touching!

(OMG, I am crying my heart out, just figuring myself in your shoes. May I never receive this cup of pain to drink.)

Hugs to you and your mom... :)

Voted up. Awesome.

Mom (vocalcoach) Hahahaha Toe toe in the tub? Oh My Gosh.. I was thinking about that as I wrote the poem! I was laughing so hard. Do you remember when you would hear the icecream truck on the next block and as soon as it reached our block, you would have me play the piano as loud as I could to drown out it's music, just so he wouldn't throw a tantrum for icecream?...lol

You are so welcome mama for the tribute! Happy Birthday to our boy! Love you!

Liz Rayen (author) from California on March 23, 2012:

CC~ Thank you so much. I am so sorry for your loss as well. You are right, we will never forget, nor should we. Some days are easier than others, but with love and support from each other, we move forward. I have a deep understanding of death and Although Todd was taken from us at such an early age, he had mission to fulfill somewhere else.:) Today, I celebrated his birthday and life which was a happy place for me. *HUGS*

Susan, Thank you so much sweetheart. Your tears are felt so strongly with me this evening. *HUGS*

Bee.. Thank you my new found friend. I am sorry for your great loss as well. May we both find peace and happiness in their lives and be all the more richer for it!

Linda, I am so sorry to hear of your loss as well. It's never easy to hear of another's loss, but it is easy to give compassion and support to each other. Hugging you BIG from afar!

Thank you billybuc! Your support is amazing and so very appreciated! :)

Thank you Richira. He is at peace and looking down on us every day! *HUGS*

LORD, you are so right. Todd had an infectious laugh and every time I have a challenging day, I hear is laugh and some smartie remark making fun of how serious I'm taking the situation. Thank you for your tears my friend. Your compassion is so greatly appreciated. *HUGS*

Cindy, you have hit it on the head. Yes, I feel him all the time. It's our human right to be selfish and want our loved ones back, but our obligation to allow them to move on to their next journey. I miss him constantly, but all I have to do is close my eyes, and he's right here reminding me our much he loves me! *HUGS*

Maria, my tears are flowing because of your sweet words. Thank you so much for such a beautiful compliment. You are such a wonderful woman. *HUGS*

Audrey Hunt from Idyllwild Ca. on March 23, 2012:

Lisa, this is such a lovely, tender tribute to our Todd.

I know it wasn't easy for you but it's a touching and oh so kind gesture.

The video is precious and brings back many memories. Do you remember "Toe toe in the tub?" It starts out "Me big Indian Chief." :-)

Thank you baby girl for the time and work you put into this. I miss him terribly as I know you do too. You're just the best. Much love. Mama

Maria Jordan from Jeffersonville PA on March 23, 2012:

What a beautiful tribute to someone with whom you had a very special relationship. It is good to have wonderful things to remember about someone, and although they may be gone, you still can close your eyes and feel them close once again for a moment as you relive a special time. Truly, truly beautiful.

LORD De Cross on March 23, 2012:

Aw, what a beautiful tribute. I lost one of my older brothers a year ago to a car accident. There are no words to alleviate the pain...just time. But, even with time, we will never forget. Ever. Such a wonderful poem. Voted up and beautiful.
