Introducing British Author Charlie Higson: A Man With Multifarious Talent and a Top Children's Books Writer

An Air Warrior and devotee of Lord Krishna has published over 120 short stories and 15 books on fiction and 4 on military history.



Charlie Higson is an English writer, who is also an actor and singer. He was born on 3 July 1958 and is presently 62 years old. Apart from writing books, Higson is also a producer and writer for television. Higson is thus a man with multifarious talents and has been a success in other fields as well, apart from his writing. He has acted in many TV serials and films.

Higson had his schooling at the Seven Oaks school and went on to attend college at the University of East Anglia. His elder brother was on the teaching faculty of this university from 1986-2008.

Higson’s foray into writing began in the early nineties and his first novel was published in 1995. Titled,’ Full Whack’, this novel brought him into the limelight as a writer. His second novel, ‘Getting rid of Mister Kitchen’ appeared in 1996. These two books established Higson as a writer of some standing. His novels took a look at dystopian life in an imaginary world where people lead dehumanized and often fearful lives.


Writer par excellence

In 2004 Higgins was commissioned to write a Young Bond series of tales on the famous character created by Ian Fleming for young readers. The books were to concentrate on the days Bond spent at Eton. Since Higson was himself educated at the Seven Oaks school, he was the most competent man to pen the young Bond series. The earlier director of MI5 Jonathan Evans was a contemporary of Higgins at school.

The first Young Bond novel ‘Silver Fin’ was published in 2005, in both the UK and the USA. Next year in 2006 the second Young Bond series titled’ Blood Fever’ was published followed by ‘ Double or Die’ in 2007. Higgins wrote two more young Bond novels ‘Hurricane Gold’ (2007) and ‘By Royal Command’ (2008). Higgins wrote 5 Young Bond novels that established him as a writer of the topmost calibre.

Higgins now ventured into the field of zombie-horror series books also targeted at children. The first in this series ‘The Enemy’ was published in 2009. The book was published in the United States in 2010 by Disney –Hyperion. The second book ‘The Dead’ (2010) was followed by ‘The Fear’(2011). His fourth novel in the series ‘The sacrifice’ was published in 2011. Charlie plans to continue the series and presently has planned a total of seven books in this series.

In 2018 Higson wrote a fighting fantasy gamebook titled, The Gates of Death, which was published by Scholastic books as part of their campaign to relaunch the Fighting Fantasy franchise. He is a long term FF enthusiast, having attended Fighting Fantasy Fest 2 in London the previous year and also made a cameo appearance in the Ian Livingston gamebook Blood of the Zombies

These books by Higgins have established him as a writer with a vast following. His books in particular are the favorite of children. Higgins is also a gifted artist in other field and has been a lead singer of a band’ the Higson’s’ from 1980-86. Higson while in the university met Paul Whitehouse, David Cummings, and Terry Edwards, this was to be a fruitful association. All of them joined together and formed the band The Higsons, of which Higson was the lead singer from 1980 to 1986. They released two singles on the Specials, 2 Tone records label. From 1994-2000- he acted and wrote comedy for a BBC show, ‘The Fast Show’.

Higson has continued his acting career in many shows after 2000. He is a recognized name on British television. He has appeared in an online version of the Fast Show sponsored by Fosters Lager. Higson is a happily married man. He lives with his wife and three sons in London. He married in 1995. Higson is one writer who does not have any scandal trailing him. He is a very talented man but his fame rests on his books for teens and children; that is a quality that is not easy to replicate.
