Inspirational Quotes - Love Is

Ed Monkton

Love is a temporary madness.  It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides.  And when it subsides you have to make a decision.  You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part.  Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion.  That is just being ‘in love’ which any of us can convince ourselves we are.  Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away and this is both an art and a fortunate accident.  Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.  Louis de Bernieres

At the touch of love, everyone becomes a poet. Plato

Life has taught us that love does not consist in gazing at each other but in looking outward together in the same direction. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Love is an irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired. Robert Frost

Love is a gross exaggeration of the difference between one person and everybody else. George Bernard Shaw

Love is the only sane and satisfactory answer to the problem of human existence. Eric Fromm

Love is, above all, the gift of oneself. Jean Anouilh

Love is what we were born with. Fear is what we learned here. Marianne Williamson

One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life - that word is love. Sophocles

People who are sensible about love are incapable of it. Douglas Yates

The supreme happiness in life is the conviction that we are loved. Victor Hugo

There is always some madness in love. But there is also always some reason in madness. Friedrich Nietzsche

There is no disguise which can hide love for long where it exists, or simulate it where it does not. -La Rochefoucauld

There is no remedy for love but to love more. Thoreau

They do not love that do not show their love. The course of true love never did run smooth. Love is a familiar. Love is a devil. There is no evil angel but Love. William Shakespeare

To love someone deeply gives you strength. Being loved by someone deeply gives you courage. Lao Tzu

Where there is love there is life. Gandhi

Who, being loved, is poor? Oscar Wilde

Woe to the man whose heart has not learned while young to hope, to love - and to put its trust in life. Joseph Conrad

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. The Bible - 1 Corinthians 13:4

Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love. Charles M Schulz

Bob Dylan - The Wedding Song

I love you more than ever, more than time and more than love,
I love you more than money and more than the stars above,
Love you more than madness, more than waves upon the sea,
Love you more than life itself, you mean that much to me.

Ever since you walked right in, the circle's been complete,
I've said goodbye to haunted rooms and faces in the street,
To the courtyard of the jester which is hidden from the sun,
I love you more than ever and I haven't yet begun.

You breathed on me and made my life a richer one to live,
When I was deep in poverty you taught me how to give,
Dried the tears up from my dreams and pulled me from the hole,
Quenched my thirst and satisfied the burning in my soul.

You gave me babies one, two, three, what is more, you saved my life,
Eye for eye and tooth for tooth, your love cuts like a knife,
My thoughts of you don't ever rest, they'd kill me if I lie,
I'd sacrifice the world for you and watch my senses die.

The tune that is yours and mine to play upon this earth,
We'll play it out the best we know, whatever it is worth,
What's lost is lost, we can't regain what went down in the flood,
But happiness to me is you and I love you more than blood.

It's never been my duty to remake the world at large,
Nor is it my intention to sound a battle charge,
'Cause I love you more than all of that with a love that doesn't bend,
And if there is eternity I'd love you there again.

Oh, can't you see that you were born to stand by my side
And I was born to be with you, you were born to be my bride,
You're the other half of what I am, you're the missing piece
And I love you more than ever with that love that doesn't cease.

You turn the tide on me each day and teach my eyes to see,
Just bein' next to you is a natural thing for me
And I could never let you go, no matter what goes on,
'Cause I love you more than ever now that the past is gone.

Leo Buscaglia

Love is always open arms. If you close your arms about love you will find that you are left holding only yourself.

Love is life. And if you miss love, you miss life

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around

Death is a challenge, it tells us not to waste time. It tells us to tell each other right now that we love each other.

We need others. We need others to love and we need to be loved by them. There is no doubt that without it, we too, like the infant left alone, would cease to grow, cease to develop, choose madness and even death

Happiness and love are just a choice away

Love withers with predictability; its very essence is surprise and amazement. To make love a prisoner of the mundane is to take its passion and lose it forever

Like any other living, growing thing, love requires effort to keep it healthy

When love beckons to you, follow him, though his ways are hard and steep. And when his wings enfold you yield to him, though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you. And when he speaks to you, believe in him, though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.

For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning. Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun, so shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself. He threshes you to make you naked. He sifts you to free you from your husks. He grinds you to whiteness. He kneads you until you are pliant and then he assigns you to his sacred fire that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart. But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure, then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not nor would it be possessed, for love is sufficient unto love. When you love you should not say, 'God is in my heart,' but rather, 'I am in the heart of God'. And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.

Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself. But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:

  • To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
  • To know the pain of too much tenderness.
  • To be wounded by your own understanding of love and to bleed willingly and joyfully.
  • To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving.
  • To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy.
  • To return home at eventide with gratitude.
  • And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

Children need love most, when they deserve it the least. Susy Yelh

We must love one another or die. W. H. Auden

The most human thing we have to do is to learn to speak our honest convictions and feelings and live with the consequences. This is the first requirement of love and it makes us vulnerable to other people who may not accept us as we really are.

But this truth, our vulnerability, is the only real thing we can give to other people. Father William DuBay

Love is real, real is love,
Love is feeling, feeling love,
Love is wanting to be loved.
Love is touch, touch is love,
Love is reaching, reaching love,
Love is asking to be loved.
Love is you,
You and me,
Love is knowing,
We can be.
Love is free, free is love,
Love is living, living love,
Love is needing to be loved.

You don't have to go looking for love when it's where you come from. Werner Erhard

Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
There's nothing you can do that can't be done.
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung.
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game
It's easy.
There's nothing you can make that can't be made.
No one you can save that can't be saved.
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you
in time - It's easy.

All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
There's nothing you can know that isn't known.
Nothing you can see that isn't shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be.
It's easy.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
All you need is love (all together now)
All you need is love (everybody)
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.

I love this Russ.. from the words to the videos and the pictures I can look at this one over and over again! I usually have a difficult time getting Gibran but interesting it was the one that moved me the most.

Thank you for this wonderful Hub!

Thank you Larry. I'm sure I've said this to you before. I really appreciate that you are one of the few people that take the time to take in all the details as well as sense the bigger picture. You seem to get the subtleties which makes it all worthwhile.

Larry Conners from Northern Arizona on September 19, 2009:

LOVEly quotes, Russ...Some of them got me to thinking about the shallowness of love in our culture now...I noticed a Hub forum yesterday titled " This one is for the ladies, but men can read it too !! "...It suggested that women can say " I can do him " or " He can do me anytime "...I didn't comment but other women that did struck me as sexually immature and their chances of finding a truly respectful love were not likely in their future...love has become a cheap commodity for some, and commitment is laughed at by our latest generation...Most have no idea what these quotes mean, what love means, or what love at a deep emotional level would be like...Love to them is more akin to lust and self-gratification.

Being from an older generation, I can say that I most sincerely relate to these insightful quotes on a personal level...How fortunate to still be amazed at the power of a new and true love....Larry
