A Poem About Being Feeling Alone In A Relationship - I Am Alone Anyway

Night after night

Day after day

I don't know what has happened

We've suddenly nothing to say.

Well, that isn't quite true

From my side of things,

I just get caught up in the silence

That your silence brings.

We used to talk,

We used to laugh,

Our own private jokes

Left other's thinking us daft!

We used to touch,

We don't anymore

I don't know if you've noticed

Many things are not as before.

You aren't engaged

In the little aspects of our life

Sometimes I forget ,

That I'm even your wife.

Scroll to Continue

I feel more like a roommate,

An acquaintance or friend,

Not the person you vowed

To cherish until life's end.

We're in the same room

We share the same bed,

But I know longer sleep

Your chest beneath my head.

I go to bed most nights

Sad and alone,

Quietly crying tears

That to you are unknown.

While you work on some project

Or hang out with a friend,

I'm alone in our room

Waiting for it to end.

If you don't want to be here

Then you need to go.

If you don't love me

You need to say so.

It's getting to the point

Whether you go or stay

Will not really matter,

I am alone anyway.

How your words intense with lots of character and meaning life can be cruel I only know too well.

Nicole K on January 06, 2016:

Very well-written poem! I love poetry. Maybe I'll post some of my own poetry on my page someday as well. You've inspired me ;)

Amanda on August 21, 2014:

@Ruchira - Thank you so much for the gift of your time, your kindness, your support, and your follow, they are not only welcome, but always appreciated! Sometimes people are going so fast, that they lose the very nuances of life....It is a sad sad situation, but maybe writing about it, by shining a light on it, we are helping in someway to effect change. Here's to hoping anyway, Thanks again! :)

Ruchira from United States on May 27, 2011:

Beautiful Poem K.Burns Darling.

I too ride the same boat of thoughts and emotions. I guess in this rat race, people are so busy with their work that the meaning of life is getting lost and alas, some people are getting burnt by it.

Will be a pleasure to follow you sista and read more of your brilliant work :) Cheers!!

@Clairepeek - Thank you so much for the generosity of your time, your comments and your kindness, they are always welcome and appreciated here! Yes, it is a sad situation, and you are right, it is all too common. I am happy that you liked it, and I too hope that my friend will be happy again someday soon! Thank you again!

Clairepeek on May 27, 2011:

This is a beautiful poem that touched me deeply because you explored a human feeling that, whether in the same situation or not, we all have experienced at some point. It is a sad reality you described and although I am glad that you are not living it, I hope your friend will soon be happy again.

Nice writing.

Kristen Burns-Darling (author) from Orange County, California on May 27, 2011:

@writer20 - Thank you so much for your kind words, and no, it isn't my story...I was having lunch with a girlfriend, and she was talking about her relationship with her significant other, and the phrase, "I'm alone anyway" kept playing through my mind and just wouldn't stop until I wrote this poem. Funny thing is that I had been struggling with a pretty nasty case of writer's block, and was so relieved to have actually finished a piece that I hit publish without ever looking back.....problem being, most people know that most of my poetry is personal...needless to say that that next day I had a lot of explaining to do...not just to my hub pages family, but to my actual friends and family as well....Thanks again for the generosity of your time, your very kind words, and your support....They are always appreciated, and very welcome here!

Joyce Haragsim from Southern Nevada on May 23, 2011:

Beautifully written although rather sad.

I hope this is only a poem and not you're real life.

I'm sure your navy husband gets on the skpe and talks to you.

Kristen Burns-Darling (author) from Orange County, California on May 21, 2011:

@Kathleen Cochran - Welcome again to Hub Pages, I think that you will find it a really great and supportive place to write! I really enjoyed your hub and being first a Marine brat, and then a Navy wife, I really identified with it...You don't happen to have any tips on my next phase do you? Just when I thought it was safe...I Recently learned that I am about to be promoted from "Navy Wife Retiree" to "Navy Mom" The adventure just keeps going on! LOL... Thank you for the generosity of your time, for your kind words, and for the follow, they are always greatly appreciated!

Kathleen Cochran from Atlanta, Georgia on May 21, 2011:

I'm new to Hubpages and came to your page because you generously commented on mine. Seems like you are where I was about 10 years ago. I'll keep an eye on your hubs! Don't have any poetry on mine yet, but if you're interested I'm on Writing is the best therapy!

Kristen Burns-Darling (author) from Orange County, California on May 19, 2011:

@Little Kim - Thank you for your time in reading this, and for your kind words, it is indeed a sad situation, and one that some people live needlessly when all they have to do is talk to one another!

Little Kim from Any town U.S.A. on May 19, 2011:

Powerful and sad that so many people are living like this.

@Raghav - Thank you so much for your time and your kind words, and I agree with you, when the love is true, people can find their way out! Thank you again for your kind words, and for the follow! They are always much appreciated!

Raghav Rathi from Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. on May 15, 2011:

Really sad but I think this happens in most marriages. Sometimes our own ambitions block the road towards love and this makes knots in the relationships.

But if the love is true, they will find their way out...eventually.

But it needs a lot of courage, will power and tolerance.

A great poem by the way, something with which most can relate to,

@Fucsia - Thank you so much for your kindness and your time spent in reading this piece, they are always appreciated! Although most of the time my poetry is personal, the inspiration for this piece came over lunch and a girlfriend's words, as she was speaking the phrase, "I'm alone anyway," got stuck in my head and kept playing like a broken didn't stop until I wrote this poem. It is her story and not mine. I am happy to report that after 22 years together, and 19 of those married, my husband continues to be my best-friend and soul mate. Thank you again for your kindness and concern, and for the follow they are always appreciated!

Very well written poem ,but very sad. I know that this is a problem for many couples, particularly after many years togheter. But we are never alone, because we are part of the Universe, we are the World, we are ever all togheter: humans and animals and nature. I do not know if my words help you, however i think that if you learn to see the things to a different point of view, bigger than our small problems, you can feel better and find the strenght to do positive actions.

Kristen Burns-Darling (author) from Orange County, California on May 11, 2011:

@Sharyn - Thank-you! It is true that one of the saddest things in life is that we can be surrounded by people, and yet still feel alone. Thank you again for your time and your support, they are always appreciated!

Sharon Smith from Northeast Ohio USA on May 11, 2011:

This was a very well written heartfelt piece. It is sad that too often we feel alone even if someone is right beside us. Best wishes for happiness.

..a very brave, courageous and bold piece of writing - so honest and harrowing I would say - almost hard to read but it reveals the beautiful soul in you - as a person and as a writer!

Kristen Burns-Darling (author) from Orange County, California on May 10, 2011:

@ Sunnie Day - You are so right, marriage is work, Sometimes people don't realize this, and that may be why my husband and I are one of the three couples left that are still together out of all of our friends who got married during the same time period... (You know that time period between when you are in your early twenties and early thirties when you seem to be going to a wedding every couple of months?) Thank you for your time spent reading my work, and for the follow...:-)

Sunnie Day on May 10, 2011:

Very heartfelt poem and one that many couples can relate to..Marriage is hard work and sometimes many do not know how to rekindle something that was lost but it can be done. Very good poem K.

Kristen Burns-Darling (author) from Orange County, California on May 09, 2011:

@Eiddwen - You are such a darling, and your words are so kind, but this one isn't about me. I was talking with a girlfriend who is having marital problems and the phrase "I'm already alone" got stuck in my head, and out popped this poem. I was so excited to have finished a piece, (I have been suffering with writer's block for about three weeks now)that I hit publish without even thinking about it...Michael and I are doing well, and continue to be happily married...I am sorry if I worried anyone. Yesterday's poem though, that one is about me. Thank you again for the time you take to read my work and for you compassion, they are much appreciated!

Eiddwen from Wales on May 09, 2011:

This is a beautifully written and also sad hub.

I do feel for you but I do hope that by writing it and sharing it with us all on here will help in some way.

HubPages is such a warm and caring community and I feel so honoured and humbled to be a part of it.

I know I can't help you but I want you to know that I do care and send you loads of hugs.

Thank you for sharing a little of your life.

Take care and God Bless you.

thebluestar, Hyphenbird, Daydreamer Too, and Poohgranma, Thanks everyone for your kindness and your concern, it is so greatly appreciated. Sometimes when writing I forget what a lovely and caring community of people I have been blessed with in my Hub Pages family, and this was a reminder of that. With that said, I know that most of the time my poetry is about me, but every now and then, when I am listening to someone else talk, or a phrase in a song catches in my brain and won't let me be, or whatever other little muse grabs hold of me and brings inspiration, then I might write something that isn't really about me. Such is the case with this piece. I was listening to a girlfriend complain about what was going on in her marriage and the phrase "I'm alone anyway..." kept playing in my head, and as I've been struggling lately with writer's block, I just went with it..... I wrote it in about twenty minutes, and was so happy to complete a piece....(it's been about three weeks) That I immediately published it. But this is her story, and not mine. I am happy to report that Michael and I are doing just fine, and continue to be happily married. I am sorry if I have unintenionally worried anyone....I didn't mean too! Thank you all once again for your concern, it is good to know that so many people care...Restores my faith in humanity!

Poohgranma from On the edge on May 08, 2011:

If someone is feeling this way I'd say let the other know clearly how they feel. You'd be surprised how many relationships just get shoved to the back burner without the other noticing while they plod through life putting one foot in front of the other.

Daydreamer Too on May 08, 2011:

Very sad to read.

The rawness of your emotions is oozing from each line. There is nothing worse than being with a partner yet, feeling utterly, alone.

Brenda Barnes from America-Broken But Still Beautiful on May 08, 2011:

Sadly, this happens in many marriages. Or so I have heard. Being single, I only know what my married friends confide. I hope the romance rekindles for every married couple. The heart needs tender care.

Annette Donaldson from Northern Ireland on May 08, 2011:

Oh beautifully put Kris, you could have been talking about me here, no one knows what goes on behind closed doors do they, especially when all the world around you thinks that you are the perfect couple. Hugs and respect for sharing. Voted up and beautiful. x
