I Make Money Writing Online on Medium and I Fell in Love With the Site

I've been writing online for more than twenty years, both casually and professionally.

What is Medium?

Medium.com is a site filled with interesting articles.

It's for readers. But it's also for writers.

It's a membership site. But it's also a free site.

As a reader, you get to read without advertising.

As a writer, you can make money! Or you can use it to promote your other ventures in making money online by writing.

Why I Love Medium as a Reader

Personally, I hate advertising. I use an adblocker but there are many sites that won't let you read if you have one installed.

Now, most of the reading I do online is through Medium.

There are never ads on the articles, whether you are a member or not.

As a non-member, you can read three articles for free each month. As a member (free sign-up ) you can read five articles for free each month.

But as a paying member, for only $5/month or $50/year, you can read as much as you like! That's less than a cup of good coffee each month.

The part I love about being a paying reading member is I know with each article I read, I'm supporting that writer. And that's important to me, because I believe writers should be compensated for their work.

Medium has articles on every topic you can imagine.

A cool new feature on Medium is the ability to listen to articles, too. Sometimes, it's nice to sit back and just listen. Each article or story on Medium has an audio button at the top of the page.

Why I Love Medium as a Writer

As a writer with ADHD, one of the things that inspires me is instant gratification. I hate waiting for editors to respond. I hate waiting for my articles or stories to get published. I hate waiting to see if people are reading my articles.

On Medium, I don't have to deal with all of that. I publish what I want, when I want (sometimes I schedule posts for later). There's no editors. And that stats are good enough so I can almost immediately see what stories are getting read.

I can even check my earnings daily.

And the thing I love the most is getting paid every month! No waiting two months to get the money. Whatever I earn in one month is paid by the 10th of the following month (sometimes sooner).

Of course, I also love the fact that I can write whatever I want. I can write short articles or longer articles. I can write on any topic. I don't have to worry about breaking Google's content guidelines.

Not every topic will have an audience and get lots of reads, but most articles get at least something. And if a story isn't performing well, I can always tweak the title and add some content and that will often give it some new life.

As a writer, you can join the Partner Program if you want to earn money. You have to have 100 followers and at least one article published to be in the Partner Program.

Once you're in, you earn money from the amount of reads on your articles. You don't earn when people are not members.

How much do you earn from writing on Medium?

That depends on the people who are reading it.

Each time a paying member reads your article, you are paid a portion of their membership fee. How much of that fee your earn depends on how many articles they've read that month.

For example, if a paying member logs in and reads only your article that month, you'll earn more than if they read a hundred articles.

The Medium Community is Amazing

Overall, the best reason to read or write on Medium is the community.

I have made some great friends there - both readers and writers - who share ideas, talk on Twitter, and comment in posts.

As a reader, I love the exchange of ideas.

As a writer, I love the feedback.

You can follow writers you like and you can always comment on articles.

Being a paying Medium member has helped me learn as a reader and grow as a writer. How can you ask for more than that?
