Tasks of an editor
The tasks of an editor vary of the kind of publication you are an editor for. But generally, these are the tasks you need to do:
- Getting to know the writer
- Reading the article carefully
- Looking for grammar issues
- Good sentences
- Structure of the article
These are very important elements of an article, so the reader has a good experience in reading the article. It is good for your site, as they will get back for information to your site. And the more reader you have, the more traffic of the articles. Your site's name is out there.
Getting to know the writer
The first thing I do when I look into the submission of a writer is to get to know the writer. What did this writer write before? Is it a plagiarist? Is this a storyteller? Does this writer write articles in a certain niche? If yes, what niche and does this niche fits in the publication? For all these questions I look into what kind of writer he or she is.
When I have done that, I look into other articles of the writer. Mostly, they also reveal who they are and what kind of character the writer has. The writer writes like he or she is and you'll see and read if he or she acts towards what the writer says it does.
I see when the writer makes grammar mistakes, and when there are a lot of grammar mistakes. When I have read the full article I check on plagiarism. When I found one, I'll let the writer know to make the article as unique as possible and make it's own.
Reading the article carefully
Read the submitted article from the writer carefully. You have to know and understand the content the writer writes about. It is important to know more about the content the writer submits. When I write about classical music, then the editor must know a little bit about the content I write about, but also do your research about the content. Then you'll know what you should edit.
Also, reading the whole article first before going to edit it. Editing the article doesn't mean you are going to edit and make the needed changes. Give the writer suggestions. The writer needs to make changes.
Looking for grammar issues
When I read the article, I look for grammar issues. One tool I use frequently is Grammarly. This tool is great for fixing all the grammar mistakes. But when they are too much, I'll let the writer know about it and ask them to fix these mistakes.
Another tool I use is LanguageTool. This is a tool that shows other issues I haven't seen in Grammarly (or the other way around).
Suggestions on how you should say a sentence is a great way to let grow the writer in their writing skills.
I love to give suggestions and see how a writer grows in writing skills. There are writing willing to grow as a writer, and there are writers who think they all know it.
Good sentences are important for a good article. Giving suggestions for a good article is a great way to improve your editorial skills, as well as your own writing skills.
Structure of the article
A structure of an article is very personal, but when publishing in a publication, they also have a favor of a certain structure. This structure is what you have to have in mind while editing the articles of the writers. When the writer doesn't use the right structure, you have to say him or her what to expect for the structure.

You're welcome. Yes, it is a great and fun job to do. Are you on Medium, the website?
Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on December 11, 2020:
I think this is great advice, Agnes. I have never been an editor, but I think I might like that job.
