How to Write Inspiring Praise and Worship Songs.

I personally loved singing since I was a child. Now I love writing songs and singing them. The tips here are the ones I use. Be encouraged

If you love singing like me, most of the time you will find yourself singing other people's songs and even nodding your head because of how nice the beat sounds. I have been here before. With the likes of rock music back in high school, I would write other people's songs in my diary and sing them when I'm alone or just wanting to feel happy.

Singing other people's songs is not bad at all. It helps you discover your voice and you are able to point out your area of weaknesses. For example not being able to hold your breath during higher notes like me many times.

Well, since I got born again, I love worship and praise songs. And I'm going to share with you how to write unique inspiring worship and praise songs that you can sing and share with others as you minister to God. Don't worry about your voice, surrender it God and just sing.

1. Listen to worship and praise songs.

Do you love worship and praise songs like me? Yeah, listen to them more often and sing along with them too as you worship and praise God. If you are saved and born again, you will be led by the Spirit of God on which songs to listen to.

We all have our favorite artists, Michael W. Smith, Travis Greene, Hillsong, just to mention a few. By listening to such songs, you are able to learn things about that style of music and it can spark your interest to write songs too.

2. Read your Bible.

Do you read your Bible and how often? And I'm not just talking about any Bible. If it has the book of Psalms, Ephesians, John, Revelation in it, just to mention a few then you have the right book. The older versions are better to use. I can personally refer you to NKJV.

Reading the Bible helps you learn more of the characteristics of the Lord and you can be able to derive words you can use in praise and worship songs. You can also sing verses and Psalms. Doing this is strongly encouraged in the book of Ephesians especially the fifth chapter.

3. Prayer.

Do you love praying like me? Then you are on the right track. You can converse with God and tell Him everything. Of how you love singing to Him and ask Him to help you with it.

Then wait upon the Lord and soon you will be able to know what to do next. You can read His word as you slowly learn to hear from Him. Did you know you can sing prayer? Yes you can. After reading many example of prayers in the Bible especially the new testament, you can learn to pray and write it down and later sing it.

4. Be mentored.

First of all, the Holy Spirit is your teacher and He will lead you to someone to help you in writing songs if indeed it is necessary and is in the will of God. You can share your lyrics with someone who is skilled in it. Then sing. Do this if you just started out and you feel you need reassurance. Still God is the closest to you and He will always encourage you and if something is not right or doesn't sound okay, you will feel it.

If you are an introvert, you can also find some good teachings online. You can read on singing tips online by Roger Love just to start with. This helps in singing what you wrote in the best comfortable way.

5. Join a local church worship team.

If you are part of a local church, you can join the worship team. And as you participate in singing, you can be able to learn on some tips from your friends. You will also get support while writing your own songs and this will help you be more confident. This is a personal decision since some people are introverts while some are extroverts. Some like a team and some like working alone.

6. Do I need a specific style?

If you were to google like I first did when I was interested in knowing how to write songs, you will find there are few approved styles of writing songs. I personally found it to be difficult and never again tried to google about it. So my answer is, no.

And why do I say no? Because when I first started learning to hear from the Lord, I would find myself singing one or three new sentences. I felt it would be a great song if I had the rest of the words. But I couldn't guess the rest of them. It needed to come naturally to me like the first few sentences. So what I did is to just sing what I had.

I encourage you to sing whatever you have. Sing it with your whole heart to the Lord. As days, weeks or even months go by, your gift, talent or ability will increase as you tarry in God's presence and you will write more and sing more. Most of my own songs don't even have a chorus. As long as I enjoy singing what I've written.

7. Keep a journal.

Write everything you sing even if it is one sentence. By doing this, my creativity really increased. So write whatever you want to sing. You can save in your email, notepad, blog or even in your book.

You can write a testimony, inspiring message, about God, about the word of God or even about the Holy Spirit.

8. Don't worry about the tune.

I mostly give my songs different tunes. If you were singing someone else's song, it is obvious you will feel the need to follow their melody and notes. When it comes to yours, just sing however you can. Fast or slow, it's okay. As long as it keeps you in the mood of worship and praise and you love doing it for the Lord, then continue doing it. God will bless it.

9. Be persistent.

Don't quit unless you are faced with something in life that takes all your concentration away. You can still get back to what you desired doing through prayer. By prayer and supplication and presenting all your requests to God, you will be back on track again. Write all you hear and whatever inspires you while reading the Bible. Keep writing and minister to the Lord.

When the time comes, you will be able to have a platform to let the world hear you sing your blessed creativity.

10. Thanksgiving.

Don't forget to give thanks to the Lord for the few lyrics He has blessed you with. He is the one who gives the increase. He blesses and will also annoint you. He searches hearts and knows your deepest desires. So always go to Him in prayer thanking Him for everything.

In conclusion, writing inspiring praise and worship songs isn't that hard when you follow the guidelines given here. The guidelines here work for me. I believe they will work for you too. May the work of your hands be blessed. May the Lord keep you and bless you.

Thank you for your kind words. I agree about learning to listen close enough. This is something I should also learn to do and the best way to achieve it, is to find a quiet place with no distractions.

Thank you for your warm welcome.
