How to Design and Sell E-Books on Your Own

Margaret Minnicks has been an online writer for many years. She writes articles that are interesting to her readers.

There are easy and profitable ways to design and sell e-books on your own. That way you get 100% of the profit right away. Let me show you how I made over $1,000 in just a few days by doing all the leg work myself. Besides, the project was fun and very rewarding to do.

An e-book is very easy to write if you know a great deal of information about certain subjects. It is even easier if you have a lot of information already written in a blog or on a writing website. The good part of electronic books is that you do not need to write 400 or 500 pages to have a great product. They can be as short as 20 to 30 pages to get your message across to readers.

If you have written articles about a variety of topics on your blog or writing site, look through your list and determine which articles and topics are the most popular among your readers. Then consider combining those articles in an e-book and offer it for a small price.

How to Design an E-Book Cover

Look no further than Canva to design your e-book cover. It is free, easy, and convenient to use. Besides, there are plenty of templates to choose from. You can use Canva's designs, make your own, or by using photos you already have.

How to Design the Pages of Your E-Book

Write your e-book in a word processing program, such as Google Doc or Microsoft Word. Let your cover be the first page you designed in Canva, then include text pages with a heading and footer. You can use photos throughout the book if you like depending on the information you provide.

Set up your document to include an automatic table of content. Every time you insert new text or delete text, the document will automatically adjust your table of contents to reflect the changes in page numbers. Any word processing you use will also have a spell checker.

After you are satisfied with your pages, you can export your project directly into a Portable Document Format (PDF). The PDF then becomes the e-book that you can sell. PDF files are the easiest to publish an eBook in. Readers have no problem downloading and reading PDFs.

Scroll to Continue

When customers receive the e-book, there are several formats for reading. They can adjust the font size for comfortable reading. Customers can click on the table of contents to go directly to the page they want to read. There is also a search bar for readers to type in a keyword, and the computer will take them to that exact spot.

You can set your own price, but you do not want to overprice an e-book. A mid-sized e-book generally goes for anywhere between $0.99 and $9.99. It is better to go for volume. For instance, you would do better by getting 100 sales for $9.99 or lower instead of getting one or two sales for a higher price.

Promoting Your E-Book

You can promote your book by notifying your family, friends, co-workers, and other contacts in your e-mail address book. You could send personal letters letting your contacts know about the sale of your book. Advertise the book on all your social media accounts. Be careful not to send the same advertisement to a lot of people at once. The site might consider it to be spam. Send a few at a time over several days to avoid that possibility.

Accept Orders

Orders can be accepted through PayPal, Cash App, Venmo, Zelle, Facebook Pay, Stripe, and many other ways. PayPal charges a fee for each order. Therefore, this writer prefers using Cash App which most people have these days. People who have none of those conveniences could also send a check or money order to a physical address. However, that is the slowest way.

Delivery of the E-Book

As soon as you get an order, send the attachment to the buyer. There are ways to set the book up so that it cannot be edited, copied, or shared with others who didn't order it.

Why I Like My Method

I like my method of designing, promoting, selling, and filling orders for my e-books for the following reasons:

  1. The process is easy.
  2. It is convenient.
  3. It is fun.
  4. I already have lots of information on the same subject that can be combined into one document.
  5. I am in control of the entire process.
  6. There is no long wait to receive payments.
  7. I receive 100% of the profit. I receive very little if I go through a third party.
  8. I know when customers order and who they are.

One Drawback

Selling your e-book on your own is easy and convenient. The drawback is that you will not get the exposure that you would get if you used Amazon. When you do everything yourself, you keep all of the profits, you have complete control over how your book is displayed and distributed, plus you get to retain all of the contact information about your customers for sales of other books.

After you sell your e-book on your own, you can still sell it on Amazon.
