How I Make Time for Writing After Having 12 Hours of Coding Job

As a software engineer, sometimes I feel frustrated because I don’t get time for writing. Writing is a complex process. You have to research, write and edit again and again before publishing your work.

It sucks if you’re a part-time writer like me.

If you want to fit in the definition of a writer, you must write daily. Sometimes, I too feel frustrated with my daily writing, After doing my 9 to 5 job. I know there is no way around.

Achieving our writing goals can be possible if we write in our spare time. We don’t need a writing time or schedule. I always prefer to remain out of morning and evening routine kind of motivation.

It’s too expensive for me.

When I was running out of time, I started analysing how I spent my time. I noted it down. After doing it for 5 days. I realized,

  • Most of the time I spent watching the news
  • Social media
  • Thinking and doing nothing
  • chatting with a girlfriend for hours

And the list goes on…….

I realized it is possible to make some room for my writing, which can support me to pay my monthly bills. Some writers make living by writing, we call them a prolific writer. I’m trying to join their tribe. I use different writing methods to find out time out of my busy schedule and also examining which works best for me.

1. I Use 13 minutes Method to become productive.

I am applying this method and writing stories in 2 or 3 rounds. It really helps you, even you are new at writing. If you have good typing speed, then you can finish your story as soon as possible.

This technique works because you get time in between your writing process, which speeds up your thinking and idea processing. You can do this in between completing your daily task.

2. I Make the outline before going to sleep

Before going to sleep, I make an outline. I use this formula to get more work done. It’s like starting off a new story. You don’t need to stress much about writing ideas and from where to start your story on a writing day. I use the below process which helps me in my writing.

  1. I make an outline before going to bed with title
  2. Read 20 minutes about writing topic (research)
  3. Write a story in 2 or 3 rounds (13-minute method)
  4. Edit in the morning (15 minutes)

I outline my story while reading and researching about the topic. I use Outline.com for taking notes. It’s always better to take notes for your topic. It helps me when I outline my story.

3. I keep Sunday to find out writing topics

Every Sunday I sit to find out relevant writing topics for the entire week. I open my Trello app and write at least 20 writing ideas.

It's worth to note down writing ideas.

When I start my writing day, I choose the best idea from my list and work on it. It removes writers' block because I never run out of ideas. I get free time on Sunday; it helps me to find better writing topics.

4. I edit Articles In the morning

I like to edit the story in the morning; It helps me feel better as a writer. Also, either I publish it or submit to publication as a draft. It worth editing your story in the morning, you can find errors and typos in your writing.

Editing helps if you are doing it after 24 hours of writing.

Morning time is best for editing, and night time for writing. I wake up 5 a.m for editing purpose; It helps to deliver bulletproof content to readers.

Writing takes time and effort. I become more productive at my writing work by applying these steps to my writing work. Let us rewind our story,

  1. Research and take notes for your writing topic.
  2. Make an outline.
  3. Use 13 minutes formula to write faster and without panic.
  4. Edit your story after one day of finishing writing
  5. Find new writing ideas regularly.
