Happy Birthday to My Daughter - 2001

There was the garden -
our very first real garden.
We’d pick green beans and
you’d ask, “This one, Mommy?”
I’d show you how the peanuts
and potatoes grew,
and tried to make you
less afraid of worms,

We had the luxury of looking
through the catalogs to find the perfect
pink-checked bedspread for your first bedroom;
You helped me paste the red felt roof
on the cardboard house and church we made
and we tacked it onto your bedroom wall.
It was just your size, and I think it made you
feel secure and loved.

I showed you how to flour the tin
for the pie crust we rolled out together,
and how to carefully pour the can of cherry filling,
And how to work the spring-loaded torte pan
for our favorite cheesecake- the one that got so high.

One time we made a graham cracker cake for grandpa
from a recipe no longer on the cracker box -
his fellow patients on the psyche ward seemed to like it.

And we’d read from books that I wish had all been more classic,
but Disney had a sale, and you seemed to love cute Mickey so.
And I was careful not to sing the sad songs grandma sang to me;
I played Cat Stevens and the Beatles on the stereo
And Firebird because someone said the dissonance was genius;
There was Peter and the Wolf -- the one played by a fancy orchestra,
but I added Frankie Lane and Denver’s songs because they spoke to me

A thousand things we did; ten thousand days together and apart,
Each day a new adventure because of you:
Watching out my taxi window on Broadway in New York as you
roller-bladed past behind a bus shouting,
“See you up at the apartment, Mom.”

And countless things you say and do
that make my world and that of others, a much happier place
Each year - a promise of a new adventure that you bring
which I experience, not really so vicariously,
all because you are my daughter!

This is very sweet. It makes me think of all the things my mom did for me when I was young. Well done.

Hi, yes that was me! Sorry. I'm not quite sure when or if I'll get around to that hub, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks for writing. Sorry I missed this email.

Yves on November 05, 2014:

I received an email in my spam folder recently which I think may be from you, Billie. The email graciously asked about one of my hubs. Was that you? I will respond back, if so. :)

Savvydating, I thought I had responded to your comment, but this page shows I didn't, so here I go (maybe again) Thank you so much!

This is a beautiful tribute to your daughter, Billie. I read your profile & discovered that you daughter is quite a talent. Congratulations!!! Your love for her, no doubt, has spurred her onward and upward.

"..a promise of a new adventure that you bring

all because you are my daughter!"

Lovely! (And I know what you mean because I feel the same way about my adventurous & talented son, whose picture is featured on my hub that you visited...isn't he the cutest thing?)

Your daughter is fortunate to have you. Sigh. I wish more parents out there would get their acts together and begin loving their children as you do your daughter.

Up, awesome, beautiful.

Sunshine, Thank you so much. Just realized that you're the writer of the great article I read for writers by writers. Do I have enough "writers" in this post? Cheers!

Billie Kelpin (author) from Newport Beach on January 22, 2013:

Pamela, You made my day! Thank you so much. I so appreciated you quoting the parts you liked. Those were two of my favorite lines too (tee hee). Best wishes to you. Again, my thanks!

Pamela Dapples from Arizona. on January 21, 2013:

This is so good! I felt like I was there -- like a bird sitting on the windowsill at an open window.

"...Dad said the dissonance was genius..." and "...not really so vicariously...." were my favorite parts.

Voting up, beautiful and sharing.
