Haiku for New Parents

Seafarer Mama/Karen is a poet. She reads her poetry to small groups of friends and to larger groups at open mics.

Haikus for the proud parents of newborns, and what to expect in the years to come

The pain forgotten;

Sweet cherub rests on your chest;

You are greatly blessed.

Relief brings hunger;

Little tyke eats ev'ry hour;

Suck burp suck burp suck.

Perfect newborn babe;

A face full of innocence;

Soft skin, tiny toes.

Velvety soft cheeks;

The shadow of eyelashes;

Many deep dimples.

Hair like the Daddy;

Scroll to Continue

Long fingers like the Mommy;

Eyes of sparkling blue.

New Life at Home

The endless diapers;

Sponge baths and midnight feedings:

Dinners 'on the go.'

Memory absent;

Mind confused from sleeplessness;

What do I do now?

Carry baby close;

Play with rattles and silk scarves;

Prepare tasty meals.

Short bedtime stories;

Rocking to soft lullabies

Brings gentle slumber.

"The ground is moving under me!"

"The ground is moving under me!"

"This wet stuff is pretty cool."

"This wet stuff is pretty cool."

"Another jump in the leaves, please?"

"Another jump in the leaves, please?"

As Baby Grows

First enchanting grin,

Then the rapturous giggles;

Teeth show soon after.

Mushy finger foods;

Toasted O's are ev'rywhere;

Splashes and bubbles.

Crawling and climbing

Reaching on those tippy-toes;

Sea of newspaper.

Gleeful hands "high five;"

Remembering words to songs;

Sings "Baa Baa White Sheep."

Reaching to wash hands;

Pours own cups of water;

Jumping high like frogs.

A beautiful tour de force and remembrance. Try it times three within 14 months! I wonder how it might change, but I identified with each stage you illustrated so beautifully. Up and awesome.

I think this is great. What a wonderful idea for a Hub! You have obviously spent a lot of time working on this so that they reflect what parents love about their babies. Thanks!
