Heaven Knows - a Short Story (Warriors in Heaven)

Swords into plowshares?

"Those who live by [for] the sword, shall die by the sword."

"Those who live by [for] the sword, shall die by the sword."

The plowshares....

Originally the question of what to do with the warriors who actually made it to Heaven posed quite a problem of resettlement.

A warrior who had just lopped the head off another warrior (not one of those nincompoops who just go around lopping off anyone's head....those don't make it to Heaven in the first place) and then finds his own licking dust, was the sort of case that seemed to defy solution.

The original warriors had been defending hearth and home even before there was fire in man and woman's arsenal. Obviously love motivated them, and they were happy to give up any thought of being warriors in Heaven, even if it could have been allowed.

When warriors of those times went out looking for more hearths and homes to conquer, there arose a heavenly discussion of what was blood lust and what was righteous intent in keeping with man's dictum that "the best defense is a good offense."

When some later warriors were first knights in shining armor defending their castles and damsels in distress, the Heavenly Host considered that to make them similar to the cave dweller defending his cave. But that changed with the Knights Templars seeking the Holy Grail and laying waste even to Middle East Christians they came across.

So once again discussions followed.

If intent became hard to judge, there had to be a way to wean these new arrivals of the adrenalin rushes they derived from dangerous combat and introduce them to the ideal of Heavenly calm.

Originally it was decided to have them work off that adrenalin by having them beat swords into plowshares and pruning hooks.

It proved a temporary solution, until finally a permanent solution was chosen: make them into guardian angels.

Those warriors deemed worthy to be accepted into Heaven were given extensive training in how to solve critical challenges without resorting to violent measures, or in other words to find a loving way, occasionally with miracles included, to protect the innocent when at all possible, by inspiring words and deeds which could protect hearth and home without irrevocable injury to any party involved.

These warriors found this more of a mental challenge than their former physical challenges of just overcoming opponents on fields of strife. Some took to their new task quite quickly, rapidly becoming full-fledged guardian angels, while others progressed more slowly and quickly realized why those in Heaven have all eternity stretching out before them.

Eventually, inspired by the heroic and successful tales of the full-fledged guardian angels, those other apprentice guardian angels joined their ranks and now perform well for the benefit of so many of Heavenly Father's children in mortality.

A key responsibility of these retrained warriors has been to assess the intent of mortal warriors, and to intervene as needed on the side of the righteous ones in keeping with Heavenly Father's will and His wisdom. That takes the extensive training, for as man has been taught: "God's ways are not man's ways....and, "the natural man is at enmity with God."

In eternal time, the guardian angels have their work cut out for them....with, of course, no cutting allowed.

The Earth is both beautiful and brutal as man envisions it.

Back in my Correctional days it was the same and remains so. Utah has restored (or is restoring) the firing squad, though it remains unclear to me how a relatively young woman could die of prescribed medications and that can't be administered intravenously to the inmate being executed.

Homo sapiens will always have that beast within, lusting after dark things and being intrigued by fighting and violence. Back in my police days, it was amazing hoiw many people would find out in front of the state prison waiting for the word on an execution. The times were never given when this would occur, and people would be out there at all hours of the night holding vigil...

Ghaelach - If you are correct, then it must follow that mankind is manterrible, and must remain a dying species likely at some point to entirely kill off mankind. The capacity to do just that has existed for quite a few years already. Our generation called it "Mutual Assured Destruction" or MAD for short.

Nice hub Perspycacious.

Although we have our Guardian Angels to help out, mankind hasn't learnt very much over the thousands of years. Man is and will always be a warrior, a fighting species.
