Good Night, Honey!

Preface

If lived in a cordial way married life is a bliss. But everyone is not so lucky. Human mind is very peculiar. It starts imagining and pondering matters which are actually required to be ignored or avoided. Lack of cooperation and maturity lead to disintegration of close relations. The consequences end with evil and destructive thoughts which are often the roots for crime. This story is crafted on the same premises. Though the theme is not new but I have tried to keep the presentation fresh.

Good night, honey!

Andrew:

Andrew finally considered the second option as best he could devise. It was an easy and sure way to get rid of her. They were married for last so many years but now he was not able to tolerate her demanding and irritating nature. After the children went away for jobs she was fully concentrated on his actions and was criticising them vehemently and many times even condemning them. It is not that she did not love him. She even took care of his needs in the house but her behaviour was becoming intolerable for Andrew. Now he had decided to do the act to silence her for good. He also decided the weapon as a small soundproof pistol which would serve the purpose well. He avoided the main market to buy it as many shopkeepers there knew him. He went to the crowded and busy market in the downtown and bought it there. From his experience of working in Intelligence Bureau for 5-6 years he knew well how the sleuths were able to catch it from one lead to another.

Last week he had visited the river bank marshy area where thick mangroves were there. It was hardly one hour drive from the house. He found it the ideal place for disposing the dead body as there were already some animal dead bodies rotting there. That was definitely a suitable place for dumping her after which he could comfortably lodge a police report about her mysterious disappearance.

Sarah:

For quite some time Sarah was contemplating various ways that she could kill her husband. She was not happy with his authoritative and commanding ways. He never listened to her and treated her like a child. She hated the preachings he made. He was so indisciplined but wanted everything well done by her. Now that she made her mind to kill her, It should look like a normal heart failure and things like that so that no doubt is raised in the neighbourhood and cremation could be done quickly. Sarah being a net surfer knew many ways of killing at least theoretically but finally settled for this easiest fool proof method. What needed was a wide cotton belt to be tied around the neck and to be tightened vigorously for a minute or so. She had done some practice around a kitchen pan few times. It looked easy. It does not leave sharp marks on neck usually searched by the police in case of doubts. She had to do it after some time when Andrew takes his sleeping pill and gets asleep. They usually went to bed sometime at 10 PM usually with a difference of 15 to 20 minutes and whoever left first courteously said ,"Good night, honey!"

It was a routine they were sharing for quite some time and Sarah knew that this time she has to wait and let him leave the drawing room first and she would follow him after a while.

Andrew:

Andrew chose Tuesday for the execution as by Wednesday and Thursday some guests were expected. Tuesday he would wait for her good night and would follow her and then two shots of cold lead would make her silent for ever. As planned he had to lift her along with her mobile phone and put in the car dicky and dump at the marshy mangrove spot as identified earlier. He remembered that he had to damage the phone and throw it there only. He had to drive fast and come back quickly to lodge a complaint in police station that she has not returned from her evening walk and that he was much worried and perturbed.

Sarah:

As her mother and aunt were expected on Wednesday evening Sarah decided to do the act on Tuesday itself. She wanted them to come and other people would find them supporting her in such an apparent sad situation. It would look so natural and she would be able to gain sympathy.

Andrew and Sarah:

It was Tuesday. After dinner Andrew took his book and settled in his chair. Sarah started her internet quest. It was hardly 9 PM and both were waiting for the next half an hour after which action would be there as per their individual perceptions.

It was 9:50 PM. Andrew spoke with excitement, "This is going to be very interesting. I may stay longer today with it."
Sara was surprised, it was unusual for Andrew to go to bed late. In that case he may simply sleep without taking the usual pill. Sara got uneasy in her chair. May be she has to wait one more week till guests leave the house. She knew Andrew would not be able to stay long now and she decided to take a chance by waiting some more time. She was just thinking to make some excuse to stay longer. She remembered her incomplete blog. She smiled to herself. Clever girl Sarah.

"Oh, wow, I am also staying late as I have to complete my blog today." Sarah almost cried.

Andrew was shocked, if she delays he would not be able to come back in time and going to police station so late in the night would raise the brows of sleuths, he knew that much by sheer common sense. Andrew was feeling uneasy but just grinned at Sarah.

Both were pretending to be busy and it was almost 2 AM that both of them realised that whatever plans they had individually had gone flop and only after the guests depart there could be a review.

"Great, I have done it." Sarah put off her computer.
"I have also finished. " Andrew retorted with great efforts.
Sarah told, "This was unprecedented. Now we should have some sleep. May be few hours and then we have to arrange things for the guests. You know your part well Andrew?"
Andrew simply nodded.
"Good night, honey!" Sarah yelled.
"Good night, dear." Andrew simply murmured.

When peaceful means are AVAILABLE for seeking separation for incompatible parteners ,why such thoughts should creep in their minds indicate they require some serious counselling.

It was a very absorbing story but ended totally unexpectedly. Language through out is excellent and very well knitted. You can surely write part two of this story about their reconciliation so as to help many young couples who end up their lives in a disaster. Enjoyed reading it and wanted it to continue. All the best.

A clever ending! I suspect one of them will end up victorious, however. Give them another week or so. Nicely written.

It's sad that the couple had such evil plans. The ending of the story is creative!

This is an intriguing and almost comical story. You build the plot up and then drop it with a surprise at the end.

Peggy, thanks for your keen observations.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on August 19, 2020:

Although their evil plans were temporarily thwarted, it is deplorable that both of them even considered and planned what they were thinking to do. You made this appear real.

Great writeup!!

Lorna Lamon on August 19, 2020:

It's sad that they did not sit down and discuss their issues, or perhaps attend marriage guidance counselling before taking such drastic action. Many couples focus solely on their children and forget to keep their own relationship alive. As the children grow up and leave home the couple realise that they are now strangers. Your story highlights a tragic relationship. Well written Umesh and thought provoking.
