Smile, a Graphic Novel by Raina Telgemeier

Smile, a Graphic Novel by Raina Telgemeier

A graphic novel series that your kids will read over and over again!

The three books in this series, Smile, Guts and Sisters, are perhaps the most read books in our house. My youngest has read and re-read these books more times than I can count. They are that good!

While these books touch on issues that all tweens and teens face, they are made that much more accessible to readers of all abilities as these books are all graphic novels. There is something wonderful about being able to pick up a book before bed knowing that you will be able to read it all before it's time to turn out the lights.

These are great books to read along side your kid too - they will give you lots of jumping off points to start conversations with your tween or teen.

The Baby-Sitters Club by Ann M. Martin

A series that I couldn't but down as a tween is now a series my kid can't put down either!

First published in 1986, the Baby-Sitters Club books were popular when I was a tween, and I'm thrilled that they have stood the test of time and are still popular with tweens and teens today.

These books focus on four girls who found and run a baby-sitting club to help parents in their community. Each book focuses on a different character and solving a situation unique to that character.

As a mom, what I love about these books is that each of the situations is realistic and age-appropriate, as the babysitters are all tweens or teens in the books and how the girls all work together to help each other through their difficulties. While the books don't shy away from showing differences and difficulties between friends, they also show how to resolve and appreciate these differences and difficulties.

While these books may be hard to put down, don't worry - a whopping 213 books were written in the series! And even better . . . there is now spin-off series as well, graphic novels, and even a series on Netflix! Just don't be surprised if you get hooked on these books too!

This series had so many twists and turns, you just have to keep reading to find out what is going to happen next!

As a parent, I first came across this series when I was looking for a good series to give my older child after they had finished the Harry Potter Series. I was shocked with the speed with which they devoured this series, and how much they loved the books!

While these books and the characters in them seem quite fantastical, they are also a bit more realistic than other fantasy-type series, like Harry Potter, which may make them more appealing to a broader audience. The fact that there is also both a boy and a girl protagonist makes these books appealing for all kids!

Thankfully, there are also companion books available that can help your child continue with their love for these characters once they've finished reading all the books in the series.

This amazing series about a teen-aged chef who also solves mysteries is guaranteed to keep your kids staying up past their bedtime to read!

My kids love to watch cooking shows - whether they showcase masterpieces or failures - they find them fascinating! So when I found a series about a teen chef who also helps law enforcement to solve mysteries, I knew my kids would be hooked! And I wasn't wrong. My kids devoured these books!

While there are only 6 books to eat up in this delicious series, the author, Kevin Sylvester has written a number of other books that I'm sure your kids will consume in short order too!

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

A Young-Adult series that most adults won't be able to put down either!

My eldest bought the first in this series home to read as part of an assignment for his English class. They were so excited by this book, that I picked it up as soon as he was finished and found that I couldn't put it down either.

This is another series that has both female and male main characters and, despite some fantastical situations, also deals with lots of issues that are prominent in the lives of many tweens and teens. This series also has its fair share of mysteries, puzzles, twists and turns, which is why it is so hard to put down!

My kids and I hope that your tweens and teens love these series as much as we all did! And I hope that your kids don't get into too much trouble staying up late to finish any of these amazing books!
