"For Dummies Books" Are Not Just for Dummies

Margaret loves researching and writing about lesser-known aspects of holidays, traditions, and other things we take for granted.

Can you believe there is a For Dummies book for chewing?

Can you believe there is a For Dummies book for chewing?

You name it, and there is a "For Dummies" book to help you with any project or hobby. If you want to learn something quickly, buy a "For Dummies" book on that subject. About nine out of ten people have a "For Dummies" book in their library on some particular subject.

The "For Dummies" is a series of easy-to-read books of instruction intended to help individuals learn and understand what they are interested in knowing. The "For Dummies" books are reference books that are not limited for just dummies. Actually, dummies are those who want to know something about a particular subject even though they might be smart in other areas.

"For Dummies" books are for wise people who know they don't know something, but they seek to learn from those easy-to-use tutorials.

As of now, there are over 2,700 of the "For Dummies" titles that have been published, and more titles will appear in bookstores on other subjects. Combined there are over 200 million books in print. The books are not limited to the English language. The books have been a worldwide success with editions in numerous other languages, and they are popular nationwide.

"For Dummies" books are popular because the step-by-step instructions are easy to understand. There is nothing technical about what to do.

The "For Dummies" books are easy to spot because every one of them has a yellow cover with a logo of a black cartoon figure with an inverted triangular face known as the "Dummies Man."

The reason the "For Dummies" series appeal to most people is because the books are user-friendly. The writing is simple and direct. Bold icons are in the margins to emphasize important passages.

Perhaps you want the information, but you don't want to buy the book for whatever reason. You don't have to buy the book to obtain the same information. You can go online to to get all the information you need.

Like the books, the website is an easy reference guide. It has the same expert advice and tips that are found in the books. Actually, there are photos and videos showing step-by-step instructions that help thousands of subjects.

The website, like the books, is quick and easy and especially good for people who want to see in action how to do a project. There are some interesting how-to videos such as:

  • How to chop an onion
  • How to carve a turkey
  • How to build a compost pile
  • How to clean your dog's ears
  • How to determine a serving size without measuring

There is a book for any subject you have in mind.

The "For Dummies" series started in 1991 with the software and computer books being first to come forward. Later the series picked up general titles. Today there is a "For Dummies" book for almost everything you can think of.

  • sports
  • games
  • health
  • diet
  • exercising
  • dancing
  • cooking
  • painting
  • decorating
  • foreign languages
  • religion

For Dummies' logo is "Making Everything Easier."

So, if you want to learn something quickly, order a "For Dummies" book about that subject. If you don't want to spend money on the book, go online and watch a video.

There is no excuse anymore for not knowing how to do something you are interested in doing.

Olive Ellis on February 28, 2012:

Rev. I did not realize there were so many for dummies books! You have opened my eyes! Vey interesting hub!

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on August 30, 2011:

Thanks, Lady E for your remarks. I don't have a Dummie book for SEO but I need one. Can't seem to get a handle on it.

Elena from London, UK on August 30, 2011:

Wow 2000 is a lot of books. People should know how to cut onions by now though... lol.

I have to admit the books do simplify things.

Ps. Regarding your poll, I don't own one but always borrow them from the library.

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on April 09, 2011:

Treasuresofheaven, thanks for the inspiration to write this article. During a conversation, you mentioned you had bought a For Dummies book. Thanks also for reading and responding. I agree that smart people are the ones who buy the For Dummies books. They are smart enough to know they don't know how do certain things.

Sima Ballinger from Michigan on April 08, 2011:

Excellent! You expressed the For Dummies (which is really not Dummies - but smart people) so well! Thanks for the info - this is very useful!!!

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on March 31, 2011:

teresa8go, there is not a Dummies book for Criminal Minds; however, there is one for forensics:

So you are a fan of Criminal Minds also?

teresa8go from Michigan, USA on March 31, 2011:

I wonder if they have a book called "Criminal Minds For Dummies"? LOL

I didn't know about the website either so - Thanks! I have bought one or two of the Dummies books on comouter programming. I was disappointed by them. I can't remember why though. Hmmmm.

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on March 31, 2011:

SubRon7, I watched the new Criminal Minds also. I miss Emily Prentiss. I wish somehow the team knew she was still alive so they wouldn't be grieving for her. I have to get to know her replacement. I'm sure after a few episodes, she'll grow on me.

James W. Nelson from eastern North Dakota on March 30, 2011:

Revmjm, didn't read your hub right now, but have kept for reference. And wanted to let you know that I watched the new Criminal Minds tonight and that hour went by so fast I couldn't believe it, so, yes, I'm their fan too, and yes, BFF!

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on March 30, 2011:

JoAnn, yes there is a website. I have used it already.

WGCreates on March 30, 2011:

I've never bought a Dummies book, but I have checked them out of our library a lot. I never knew they had a website. I'm definitely going to bookmark that site. :)

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on March 30, 2011:

Betty, I have several For Dummies books, but I do use mine. I didn't know about the website until I was doing research for this article. So I will be using that instead of investing $20 in another book. As usual, thanks for reading and responding.

Betty Johansen on March 30, 2011:

You want to know what makes someone a real DUMMY? Spending $20 on a dummy's book and never using it. That would be me. If only I'd known about the website - alack, alas, and woe is me! Thanks for cluing me in. And, BTW, the chewing food book for dummies may be one that more of us need - I'm thinking of people who inhale their food instead of chewing it. (I won't mention my name this time.) Another superlative hub! Way to go!!!

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on March 30, 2011:

Marcella, yes there is a For Dummies book on almost every subject imaginable. I am glad you were informed.

Marcella Glenn from PA on March 30, 2011:

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on March 30, 2011:

Yes, Johnny, but I won't hold that against you. So now that you know, you can save yourself some money on buying the books. And, you're no dummy because you read my article! Thanks

Johnny Parker from Birkenhead, Wirral, North West England on March 30, 2011:

I never knew there was a website, I guess that makes me the dummy!

Nice hub.

CherylLeKane on March 30, 2011:

Thank you revmjm. I will certainly have a look at these books for dummies!

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on March 30, 2011:, thanks for reading and responding. Yes, it is hilarious that there is a For Dummies book about chewing. There are thousands of other titles, but I chose that one to highlight to give my readers an idea of the wide variety of titles. on March 30, 2011:

This is hilarious! I never knew Rev there were such obscure titles like the chewing! Thanks for the read!

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on March 29, 2011:

FaithDream, yes there is a For Dummies book on just about anything. Can you imagine a book on how to chew?

FaithDream from (Midwest) USA on March 29, 2011:

Hi Rev.. I have a fibromyalgia for dummies book. I was shocked when I saw it at the store, so I bought it.

I didn't realize how many titles they have on pretty much anything. Interesting though, I guess when you find success you capitalize on it.

Thanks for sharing another great article.

Margaret Minnicks (author) from Richmond, VA on March 29, 2011:
