Send me your texting horror stories & I will add them to this article. Send to: opeeongo@yahoo.com & please don't send them while you're driving.

Just The Facts:

Every two hours one pedestrian is killed and one is injured every seven minutes all over the U.S. due to distracted driving. 3,000 Americans die each year from distracted drivers. Unofficially, that number could be closer to 20,000. (source)----https://www.togetherforsaferroads.org/ distracted-driving-a-public-health-epidemic/? gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9cmG8Zne-AIVE6jICh3 s6QETEAAYAyAAEgKdOfD_BwE Bus drivers, freight train and subway operators, operators of heavy machinery, UPS and Amazon drivers, Mailmen, truck drivers, boat operators, Men, women, teenagers, senior citizens, criminals, Policemen, firemen, ambulance drivers, the list is endless. A percentage of each one of these categories are texting daily while driving! and often the end result is cataloged as gory. How many times do you pass somebody on any road and notice them not thumbing their nose at you but thumbing their phones. They don't even see you go by. At 70 or 80 miles an hour they are typing a text not only on a high speed internet but on a high speed highway. Efforts have been made to ticket these offenders in many states but there are not enough police to catch them all in the act and some of the police are texting too. What is the fascination with playing the alphabet and numbers game, with so many folks gambling that they won't get hurt or killed or hurt and kill other poeple all around them? What in God's name could be so damned important that you have to text someone while you are driving? The worst case accident I ever saw was on a freeway, two guys in a car, with the driver texting, and I have to guess the passenger was either asleep or texting as well. They ran up underneath a tractor trailer that they never saw all the way to the back of the cars roof. Thier odds of survival were already bad but then their car caught on fire pinned beneath that huge trailer. I slowed down out of respect as I passed knowing that there was no reason to stop because they both were beyond any help. But I noticed in my rearview mirror as I waited in a long line of gawkers, that up on a bridge behind me overlooking that crash I saw men, women and children all taking cell phone videos of these two unfortunate men burning alive. What kind of a sick society have we become. How often were their clips posted on facebook and other social media. Maybe a few of them texted about the crash on their way home never realizing that they could wind up in the same fate. Maybe folks who text and drive feel safe with their seatbelts and air bags all around them but a crash at seventy to eighty miles an hour will kill you. You will be a bloody corpse amidst a heap of useless air bags and even busted seat belts because you were texting and you never hit your brakes. "Can you hear me now." is often what firemen holler at you as they attempt to extricate you from the wreckage with the jaws of life. I sincerly hope no one will be reading this article I am writing, while they are set on cruise control on some highway a week or two from now. You can't read. make a call, text, sext, swat at a bug, reach down to pick up a dropped phone, unwrap a burger, try to find a good song on your radio, put on mascara, study your GPS screen or any other forms of distraction because there are precious lives all around you. You are a reckless speeding missle with no directional control. The worst part would be if you killed someone or a whole family due to your phone habits. That phone will be found and it holds a record of your last text or call and it will be used to prosecute you for vehicular manslaughter. Let us not forget the guilt you will live with when you text your husband (soon to be a has been) as he's driving, just to tell him to pick up some milk for the kids. The responsibility extends as well to the non-driving participants. The kids will be without milk that week and without their daddy forever. I followed a young girl last year who kept driving across the double yellow line for over three miles. She was obviously texting and every time she crossed that yellow line into traffic I blew ny horn and waved at her to get back over. Six times before we reached a light where I could pull up on the right and there she was so busy texting that she never even looked up at the annoying driver who was blowing his horn at her. When the light turned green after another car behind her honked its horn because she had not noticed the light change. She proceeded through the light still thumbing a possible trip to eternity. One would have to be insane to ride any motorcycles in this age of texting. They were always getting hit by cars before cell phones so imagine how many times they are getting hit now. If you choose to make a collect call to God on the road, he will eventually collect you, and the first thing he will ask you is, "Why in my name were you texting and driving?". I granted you fifty more years and you threw it away just to talk to a friend." No one really knows how many unrecorded deaths are caused by texting. If the phone that killed you or others around you is obliterated or burned up so badly that nothing can be retrieved from it or lost in the bottom of a muddy lake, or flung deep in the woods on impact through the same window that you were ejected out of then at least they can't prove you were at fault for texting. Isn't that a small victory....."NOT!!" Phones should be designed to turn off the texting apps and keep them off whenever they are in any vehicle that goes faster them 5 miles an hour, except for all emergency vehicles of course. There is no need to ever text while you are driving. There is this magical place where you can text in your cars that is called a median or a rest area. They even have places where you can pull over and text. I always wanted a small Zapper, that I could point at anyone who was driving and texting. something that would shut down their phone before they ran into me or made me miss a greenlight. perhaps a very loud P.A. system built into the grille in the front of my car and a microphone clipped to my collar so that I could blast them with the words: "Hey the light is green, get off your phone." That might be something I could peddle on Shark Tank. Who knows I might actually get rich off of your texting. And all of you texting and driving folks might live to be ninety. You would get tired of others drivers berating you publicly and embarrassing you with all kinds of nasty instructions about your You all know better but you think it will never happen to you. Until you are flying out of a windshield or side window into a telephone pole or a tree at sixty miles an hour and the person you were texting wonders why you stopped so suddenly. Soon enough they will their answer and they will lay flowers on your grave and wish they had told you to text them later when you were not driving. if they could make a monument to all who have perished by texting and driving, just by sodering all of the cell phones from crashes into a sculpture of the grim reaper. it would probably stand as high as the Empire State building but many other folks would end up trying to get a shot of it on their cell phone and wind up crashing their cars as they passed it. I wish you all Godspeed on your journies and safe passages that are not thumbed into your phones. I'll see you out there cause I am always watching the road and those who traverse it.
