Contemplating the existence of God

Way back in the 1960s, every evening, my mother used to raise a question, ‘did you pray to God today? You must do so for the divine guidance.”

‘Yes, I did mom. I offer my prayers every day, which was my answer, as an obedient son. At my age of 10, I religiously used to recite hymns from the scriptures.

One day, while walking down the road from my school, a thought came to my mind. Why does my mother insist on me to say prayers every day? What is the meaning of the prayers I recite and who is God, where is he?

The thought consistently bothered me, because I knew nothing about it. There must be some mystery behind it, otherwise, my mom would not have insisted on me in prayers.

For us, our mother has been the center of the family and our highest ideal. She is to us the representative of God, as God is the mother of the universe. Sometimes, the power of the mother is overlooked. Now I realize the mother’s impact on child development to understand who we are.

My father was considered generous and had a liberal and progressive outlook in social and religious matters. He influenced my thinking by his rational mind, and my mother, by her religious attitude. Since my childhood, I have had an inclination towards spirituality, to understand my soul, my inner life, and God-realization.

Whenever people talked to me regarding spirituality, I reacted with great interest, because, I knew nothing about it, and was keen to know the importance and power of spirituality.

It is said that unless there is an intense quest for the existence of God, you can’t seek the truth. I tried to find my answers through the books and religious discussions, the conviction about the existence of God somehow did not appease my rational outlook. I never received any satisfactory answer to my questions, until my age of sixteen.

What is the meaning of ‘liberating our soul from our body, why one should try for it? But, at the same time, it is said that the key to our liberation is in the hands of God and this lock will open only when our purpose of coming into this world is achieved.

When my parents realized that I’m wondering, asking people around about the truth behind the existence of God, the following Sunday, they arranged my meeting with a saint from the nearby village.

In that village, many people were waiting outside the hut, surrounded by trees. I entered the room as signaled by the man standing at the door. The room was filled with a pleasant fragrance of incense. The saint with orange robe, and a pious-looking face, shaven head, was seated with folded legs, meditating composure, eyes closed.

He gave a casual smile when I entered the room. “Sit in front of me, my son”, he simply pronounced. You are lucky to have such wonderful parents. Your thoughts and inclination towards God have inspired me,” he said.

You must keep one thing in the back of your mind that God is everywhere, all around us, constantly reaching out to us, even in the most unlikely situations.

Master, I questioned, “What is the meaning of God?”

He smiled and said, “God is a spirit, invisible, untouchable. But when we are alert, we can sense his effect on us. He is everywhere.”

“If he is everywhere, why can’t I see him now?” I asked.

“You can and you see him right now. The only thing is, you do not know about it,” he said.

“It is possible for one to see and talk to Him, but there are hardly a few, who showed keen interest in seeing Him.” He was explaining.

I could sense the ringing of truth in the master's words.

“Remember Shyam,” He said, “Service to man is the most effective worship of God and this is explained in all the religions. Have equal respect for all religions. Do not believe in the myths and superstitions with which, the religion is generally associated. He tried to combine all the religions, just as beads are combined into a single rosary.”

I have put plenty of thought for several years thereafter to understand what the master said. But, I constantly followed what I always perceived and believed. I was always seeking a chance to experience all the events myself, and eventually, I decided how to perceive them.

In the prevailing situations, there are abundant problems and challenges faced by us from every social class, background, and location. Each day we confront issues related to safety, security, financial constraints, food adulterations, mortality, and health. Due to these frequent challenges, we are compelled to think, what life is about and what is the true purpose of our living. Religion stands as a universal device to explain these things and the truth, which we fail to understand and realize through the discussions, debates, related to the observable physical world.

Death signals the eventual zenith of our life on this earth. In a compact form, it depends entirely on how we lived. Hence, only a few will die naturally, because very few lived naturally. Our existing conditions don´t permit us to be natural.

This whole world is a form of illusion and we all human beings are mesmerized. We like the audience are completely spellbound and enthralled by the sheer force of worldly presence. This world, what we see with our eyes open, is like a mirage. It does not even exist. Know this for sure, our entire thoughts and attention is fixed as if by its mesmerizing spell and we are completely influenced by its appeal, fascination, incantation, and charm. Its intensity, its brightness has mesmerized the complete humankind for several millions of years, and still, we continue to indulge in this worldly action as if the entire things are true. This whole world is ASAT, which means delusion. Besides this awareness glow, nothing really exists.

We are influenced by the delicate effulgence and brilliant radiance of all the objects that shine and glorify our senses. Visual perception of substances has enthralled our senses and hence we are fascinated by its sheer force of attraction. Being careless of the truth and actuality, we keep wondering like vagabonds in search of worldly gains in this dream world. Our Mind misinterpreting the entire world that we see, and we refuse to see it as it is in reality. When the supreme truth shines and the awareness takes its course, there will be no bondage of any sort and the question of liberation will not exist. Due to our split intelligence, we observe constant changes around us.

One who has transcended the real understanding of the universe and acknowledged the supreme spiritual truth has achieved the real goal of life by abolishing Ahankar and egoism, and he will be free of all desires.

Interesting. Yes, Aspiration is the beginning and the end of the journey. That longing, that inner cry, that burning yearning or inner hunger, without which nothing can be achieved. We want to swim, but few get into the water. Lovely ideas and inspirations

As it happened to you, it also happened to me and many others...My inquisitiveness to know God and many of the things I heard and read He does make me also sunk my life in serious prayers for decades... This essentially will keep happening to inquisitive minds globally.

Good work.
