Comic Investing 101! My Top Picks of Key Bronze Age Marvel Investment Comics to Get in 2012 Part 1!

An avid comic collector and fan for nearly 20 years, Vic started collecting comics around eight years old. Comic investing since the 2000s.

As more and more high grade silver age comics become too expensive and out of reach for most comic collectors, comic investing has been seeing demand for high grade bronze age comics steadily rise. Trying to duplicate the success of the foresight of past comic investors who bought certain high grade silver age comics during the 70s for cheap, this new focus in seeing investment comics from the bronze age of comics isn't such a bad idea.

However, in order to duplicate those who profited highly from the silver age gold rush, which is still being mined and going strong, the highest of bronze age comics must be sought out and acquired. Unlike silver age comics, there are quite a number of high grade bronze age key issues that are already registered with CGC.

Getting these cheap now, before they start hitting insane prices like the not so distant past is the key in comic investing. Also choosing the right comic investments to make is another crucial part of the game as well.

Do not go broke over this stuff. All investing has risk. You can lose money, but establish a budget.

So let the hunt begin for bronze age comics. Here's a list of comic books that are my top picks of Marvel bronze age comics to consider as investment comics!

The Incredible Hulk #180 1st Brief Appearance of Wolverine!

This bronze age key issue comic book is in extreme high demand as it is, and this comic book is rapidly starting to be seen as the real first appearance of everyone's favorite X-Men mutie - Wolverine! This comic book isn't cheap at high grades. It's guided at $350 for a low NM 9.2, and anything above will be even more expensive.Expect to pay near or over a thousand dollars for a CGC 9.8 of this book.

Yes, pretty expensive, but if we're going to compare it to the cost of some silver age key issues, it's not even close to the ridiculous price of over a million dollars like the first appearance of Spider-Man in Amazing Fantasy #15 at the grade of CGC 9.6. That comic sold for that price just last year.

Will this comic book continue to rise in value over the years? The answer is an absolute yes, as Wolverine is one of the most popular characters in the Marvel Universe, and with the X-Men movie franchise being such a success, you can expect more X-Men movies in the works.

But do not get me wrong here. This is an investment comic, which means it will be best to hold onto it for the long-term. In 20 years or so, I'm predicting the highest graded copies of this book to be close or above ten thousand dollars.

Incredible Hulk #181 1st Full Appearance of Wolverine

As you can see from ebay price above on this highly sought out bronze age key issue comic, it's well over a thousand dollars for a high grade book. This is the first full appearance of Wolverine, and the price of this book keeps getting more and more expensive. Yes, this comic issue is an investment comic for sure.

Overstreet guide is behind on the value of this book. The ebay listing is bid up to $2000 dollars with 3 days left. It will be more than $2000 when the auction ends for sure. However, currently guide has this book's grade of 9.2 at $1700. Overstreet needs to catch up with the market's demand on this book, because if you can't get it cheaper or around guide on ebay, you won't get a high grade copy near guide anywhere!

In 20 years, I'm predicting this comic at a 9.8 CGC grade will most likely near the $60,000 to $70,000 mark. It's already around $15,000 at this CGC grade.

Iron Man #55 1st Appearance of Thanos

Okay this key issue comic book just doesn't have the first appearance of Thanos. It also has the first appearance of Drax the Destroyer, Starfox, Mentor, and Kronos! This book is now in great demand!

Thanos is a very popular character, and I believe demand for this bronze age key issue will begin to climb and get more and more expensive as the years progressive. It's already not that easy to find. It's truly time to buy this 1st appearance of Thanos while demand is soft.

However, as the president of production at Marvel Studios has said, Marvel is seriously interesting about making movie's for Marvel's more cosmic characters. I have no doubt that Thanos will be seen on the silver screen in the not so distant future.

UPDATE: Since Thanos made a cameo in the smash hit Avengers movie, there's no doubt that this cosmic villain is slated to have a more serious bad guy role in future Marvel Movies coming soon. The rumor is that Thanos will appear in both the Guardians of the Galaxy or the Avengers 2 sequel.

The first appearance of Thanos is hot right now! This comic book also boasts the first appearance of Drax The Destroyer and Drax is a well-known team member of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Marvel Premiere #15 1st Iron Fist

Yes, this has the first appearance of Iron Fist as well as the character's origin, but why this bronze age comic as a top pick for an investment comic? Good question, and the answer is that Marvel Studios has leaked out information that they are very interested in opening up their martial arts world when it comes to post Avengers movies.

Yep, they're talking about an Iron Fist movie, and right now, this comic book is not in high demand. I have a feeling it will be though. Right now it's guided at $160 for a low NM 9.2. I'm highly expecting this comic to rise in value in the next few years for higher graded books above a low NM.

Higher grades above low NM are already going above a thousand dollars, and this will only get worse as the years go by, especially if Marvel Studios does release an Iron Fist movie. Ah, investing in comics can be a drain on your wallet.

1st Appearance of Sabretooth!

1st Appearance of Sabretooth!

Iron Fist #14 1st Appearance of Sabretooth

Although Sabretooth first appeared in Iron Fist, the character became extremely popular as Wolverine's arch nemesis. This comic is in high demand and sought out by many comic collectors to add their collection. It will only get worse.

The price for a low NM on this comic is guided at $300 dollars. Not cheap at all by any standard. The 35 cent variant is $1650 for a low NM 9.2! Yikes, but the variant copy was printed in very limited copies.

Either way, because Sabretooth is an extremely popular villain, this book will only continue to rise in value, and those who know comic investing either are seeking this issue out or already have it in their collection.

Marvel Spotlight #2 1st Werewolf By Night

Can we say Halloween comes around every year, and also Hollywood always has some werewolf type movie coming out? It's true, our fascination with werewolves always seems to get revived, and because of that fact, I'm putting this bronze age comic as a top pick investment comic to think about investing in.

Although this character really isn't one of Marvel Comic's most popular, the comic is guided at $425 for a low NM. That's a pretty big chunk of change considering. However, are lower grades or even mid grades a good comic investing choice? I would say so.

You don't have to get the highest grade book. I only get the grade of a book that I can afford. However, a 9.8 of this issue will be around $2000 to $3000 smackers. That hurts, considering this key comic issue isn't in huge demand at the moment.
