Celebrated!

Poetry is the heart of literature. A story is fine, a poem reaches the soul quickly eliciting raw emotion, and a Poem that is story Rules!

When we were kids, many of us, if not all of us received accolades for doing simple tasks--voiding our bowels! Kids, our kids, genuinely receive praises for going to the potty! The dogs always receive a treat for not barking at odd times, bowel voiding in the proper place, or anytime we want to show them affection

I remember being paid for receiving 100% marks on my overall grade in a school subject. Rewards! Recognition! It feels good to be celebrated!

Feeling antsy about the coming Juneteenth and Fathers' Day celebrations of the great 2021 year, I wanted a dose of commemoration, of sorts--a quick fix of satisfaction.

Intrinsicly, I live between celebrations and pats on my back, similar to the way we give treats to our kids and pets. As insulting as I took it on the first reflection, an understanding, of sorts, sank in after second and onward reflections. Inspiration for the following poem came due to the mundane situations of life. A lack of recognition brought out my muse to admit craving that thing!

One

I want to be celebrated!

That is just simple and plain truth.

Why lie and qualm about it.

Just give me what I want you to.

Crave as I do the recognition,

Pretended embarrassment when given,

Give it to me often and graciously.

For these words and praise, I’m living.

Recognition on my birthday made me cry.

Unexpected praise from the unexpected givers.

Truly felt, the words to my soul, I swear it!

Each reflective moment gives me shivers.

To stroke my ego? Lift my spirits--that is all!

Two

I want to be celebrated!

That is just simple and plain truth.

Each time it happens I want more of it.

Any occasion you will offer it will do.

Say “thank you” to me for some reason.

I blush, pretentiously wanting to know the cause.

Waiting to give your words some pertinence

To stroke my ego? Lift my spirits--that is all!

Another day to celebrate comes quickly, days away!

I stroke my emotions expectantly for the time.

Ties, cards, candies, and more, what will I get?

Rewarded for making kids!that once isn’t just fine.

I want to be celebrated!

Three

I want to be celebrated!

That is just simple and plain truth.

Repeatedly until the day life leaves me.

A celebration to me is your love’s proof!

Is it wrong to be celebrated?

That is what I want? I cannot lie, can I?

Recognition makes life seem worth living.

My reason for wanting it? Who cares, comply!

You don’t have to celebrate me, you say?

Ignore my needs and cravings you will?

Please, don’t do that terrible deed to me.

For as much as I take, I willingly give.

We can all be celebrated!

Acceptance and love, we want them, no lie!

Celebrations and recognition help us care.

Even if, within many of us, we will deny.

Four

I wanted to be celebrated.

Get your body shaking and your mind racing to celebrate!

Life is precious. Only one you exists, rare and unique.

Why not celebrate you? Let it be so! It's never too late.

Celebrate yourself with pageantry and mirth!

Raise hands to heaven and extend your recognition to your health.

Every breath is a gift to know how great you are.

Disability and poverty be damned! Now be a star!

Life has it knocks and rocks!

Pat yourself on the back for surviving the day.

Life is short for some and long and hard for others.

Recognize, to God you are unique and especial either way!

Brenda, giving me an excuse to comment on my own poem without feeling embarrassed by so doing is always a pleasure! I usually am self-deprecating, but not so much anymore. Society taught me not to "try" to stand out. I like recognition, attention whether it is a criticism or compliment.

My goal and drive are not to become arrogant. I have a friend, Chris Heimeindinger, a good writer who published many books, music, and films. In all of that success, he still talks to his fans intimately. I want the celebrity without the possibility of pride ruining it. Thanks for visiting again.

So glad I passes by this one again.

It is great to celebrate...even if we are alone.

For to God we are all unique.

Raise your hands & celebrate.

Great write.

That's a good idea, John. I never thought to do that. I just kept editing the article until it gets featured. I do not know how that happens. I have read several articles featured with grammar issues. Obviously, there is a criterion that supersedes grammar issues.

John Hansen from Gondwana Land on July 11, 2021:

I have done that a few times Rodric, but mainly with articles that are still on the basic HubPages to get them seen and more traffic.

Does anyone else make comments on their own stuff just to bring them back on the feed? I do. I love this poem. I think it is going to be my spirit animal representation. Of course, I cannot tell you who my spirit animal is because it will offend it. Only some will get that.

Sounds great!!

I look forward to reading your work.

Brenda, I had just given up on look for your page and noticed this comment! Talk about coincidence...

Thanks for reading my poem. I am looking forward to reading and participating in the week 17 Word Prompt "Memories."

Goid sentiment.

I think we all want to be recognized now & then.

It's great to know we are important to someone.

Misbah, thank you! You are gracious. Any time you comment it is a pat on my back. I am editing several old articles to make them "evergreen." With over 300 long articles to read, I get to see many mistakes. Thank you for offering your support.

Misbah Sheikh from The World of Poets on June 16, 2021:

Oh, Never mind, Rodric. I was able to understand and I believe many have not even noticed it with the rhythm. It happens to everyone. I myself make a lot of typing errors. It was just a small typing error we all make that.

Well, another line from your poem will suit the situation

"Say “thank you” to me for some reason."

Stay blessed and happy

Rodric Anthony Johnson (author) from Surprise, Arizona on June 16, 2021:

Misbah, thanks for pointing out a mistake. I know you did in to try to do so, but "ad" should be and in that stanza! I need to correct it.

Also, thanks for reading my poem and your encouragement. You are welcome also. I am glad to cheer up things.

Misbah Sheikh from The World of Poets on June 16, 2021:

Rodric, you've done an excellent job with these poems. It's always nice to be appreciated and celebrated. I enjoyed it whole, but I loved the following lines:

Life is precious. Only one you exists, rare ad unique.

Why not celebrate you? Let it be so! It's never too late.

Life has its knocks and rocks!

Pat yourself on the back for surviving the day.

Thanks for cheering up the mood!!

Many Blessings to you

Bill, I am glad you enjoyed the poem. I am trying something new with these poems. John Hansen inspired me to dip into that aspect of writing. I appreciate the comment.

If we are all being honest, my friend, we all want to be celebrated. Loved the poem. Loved the honesty. Well done!

Wonderful poetry Rodric. I loved the last line 'Recognize, to God you are unique and especial either way'. I agree life is precious, rare and unique and we need to celebrate our life even when others don't. Thanks for sharing.

John, way to go to a guy's ego! Thanks for reading my poem and encouraging my jump into something a little different than I am used to writing.
