Carolyn, the Special Girl

I love to write essays, short stories, and fiction. And I am glad to share them here.

There was a phone call from Carolyn’s school. Her father picked it up.

“Hello. This is Judy, among the staff, from Saint Joseph School.”

"Oh, hello! This is Carolyn's father."

"Yes, I would like to talk to you about something important regarding your daughter. She is not fit for a regular school like ours. She requires special needs and a special school. We have tried everything and tested her. She isn't fit for a regular school."

“Oh!” exclaimed Carolyn’s Dad in utter shock. “That is very sad to hear. We will withdraw her from your school as soon as we can. Give us a little time.”

"Yes", said Judy. "You have a week."

“All right”, said Carolyn’s Dad, feeling downtrodden.

Carolyn’s parents discussed the matter over lunch. They were both very concerned about their daughter. Their budget wasn’t too high, and admitting her to a special school supplying special needs meant more expenditure. The parents decided to break some of their invested savings bonds to cater to Carolyn’s sudden demands.

The next day, Carolyn's parents dropped her at the regular school and began their journey on the quest for an appropriate school for their daughter. After three days of thorough searching, they decided the school suitable for Carolyn. They took her to this school.

They saw lots of handicapped and/or mentally retarded children. Inside their hearts, the parents felt happy that their daughter was in a much better status than most of these children. They admitted Carolyn to the school. They also kept a home tutor for helping her further with school lessons.

Carolyn's parents believed that their daughter could make it again in a regular school if she was taken care of properly and lovingly.

After two years, with Carolyn's new school's permission, they admitted her to a regular school. They retained her home tutor. It looked like they were right about their daughter. She was coping well with her lessons. She was still a little slow, but she didn't do too bad in the quizzes and exams.

Carolyn’s father was so happy that he called in a party at their home to celebrate her achievement. He overindulged in food and drinks, and after guests were gone, he began to feel a chest pain. By late night, he was all sweaty and also in pain. The older brother of Carolyn, Ryan, called an ambulance, and the father was taken to a hospital nearby.

The doctors reported that he had a massive heart attack. He stayed in the hospital for a few days, his family caring for him every day. And then, in the span of the next few months, he had more heart attacks. He was in and out of the hospital when he succumbed to his ailment and passed on.

The mother heavily grieved. She was dependent on her husband and loved him very much. Her world was shattered. She couldn’t take the pain and almost lost her mind.

Ryan, Carolyn's brother had passed university, and together with his best friend, Jamie, they sorted out the documents and files of his father. Carolyn’s Dad hadn’t left a will. So, the brother took custody of everything, giving little of their assets to Carolyn and their mother.

Jamie, Ryan’s best friend, started to pay attention to Carolyn. She looked like the most beautiful girl in his eyes. The mother and Ryan always had fights about assets and properties. She accused him of stealing everything away from her.

Meanwhile, Jamie and Carolyn started spending good times together. They were clearly in love, but the mother and Ryan were so busy with their arguments every day that they failed to notice the couple.

One day, the mother and Ryan were having their rows as usual when Carolyn started to faint, and Jamie caught hold of her gingerly.

It was then the mother and brother felt suspicious for the first time. They took her to the hospital. After Carolyn regained consciousness, the doctor declared that she was expecting.

The mother and Ryan felt enraged at Jamie, but finding no other alternative, they took Carolyn and Jamie to a nearby court and offered them a court marriage.

After nine months, Carolyn gave birth to a baby girl. Carolyn was thin and frail and didn’t eat much. But Jamie took care of her and the baby.

As time passed along, the mother and Ryan became bitter enemies, and she was on the brink of losing her sanity. She no longer protested or argued. Her health failed her. She was sick in bed for several years until she passed on.

Meanwhile, Carolyn and Jamie had two more children over time. Ryan behaved rudely with them and asked them to move away and find an apartment of their own.

On weekends when Jamie was free from his regular work at the office, he looked desperately for a cheap apartment, and, finally, after a prolonged search, he found one.

He bought furniture and had his home cleaned by a maid and then brought his family to their new residence.

He took good care of his children and his feeble wife. And by and by, the children started to grow, and the wife was well-nourished to get back her health. Jamie made sure his family was well-equipped with food, clothes, and other necessities. None of his children had problems like Carolyn had initially as a child. They went to a regular school, and they had a home tutor to guide their lessons.

Jamie was a blessing to Carolyn, and one night, when her husband and the kids were sleeping, she tiptoed to the living room, opened the large window, looked up at the starry sky, and said a prayer.

"Thank you, God, the Almighty, for the wellbeing of my family. I am grateful to You that You have blessed me with a good husband and three children. I am also glad I am in good health and good shape. Thank You, God, for all the blessings. You couldn't have made me happier. My parents may have gone; my brother may have cheated on us, but I will always have faith and trust in You. Thank You for making things easier for us. After all, we all survived and are now thriving. I am eternally grateful to You! Amen."

Even though the greedy brother behaved so dishonorably toward his mother and Carolyn, I was so happy to read that in the end Carolyn and her family due to her very loving husband and the will of the Almighty ended up thriving. I love stories with good endings and your story certainly fits that category! A very nice story with some very good insights, Rosina.

Yes, some may have differing opinions about where to end the story. And I am sorry to disappoint you. But I think it is a fitting end to the story as I wanted Carolyn to be the focus of the story.

Thank you, Denise, for reading and your comments. Truly appreciated.

Denise McGill from Fresno CA on July 28, 2021:

It seems a strange place to end. I was looking for more, like they found the will the father had left but the brother hid so he could have control of everything. Or one of the kids turned out to be a prodigy with musical ability or artistic ability.

Blessings,

Denise

I like your analysis of my story. I especially love your concluding line: God finds pleasure with those who never give up & have faith that he is walking with them.

Thank you so much, Brenda, for your most insightful comments. And I am happy that you enjoyed the story. God bless!

Rosina

Carolyn indeed had a very rough life.

Her parents did care for her, but the death of her father out a great hardship on her & her mother.

No doubt her brother was only thinking of himself.

Especially when he made her & her husband move out with their children.

But in the end...all works out because they helped themselves.

God finds pleasure with those who never give up & have faith that he is walking with them.

Great little story.

I am delighted that you enjoyed the story, Chitrangada. Yes, I have referred to Carolyn who required special needs to cope with her lessons. She studied in a special school for two years and then she was well on her way to regular school again.

Thank you so much for your insightful comments. I appreciate them, as always.

Chitrangada Sharan from New Delhi, India on July 27, 2021:

Hello Rosina!

An interesting and engaging read, and you kept the curiosity till the end. I liked it very much.

You have referred about the special needs children. Yes, it’s slightly difficult for them in the regular school. But, if the teachers are considerate and compassionate, it’s easier for such children to cope up.

Thank you for sharing another wonderful story.
