Brickbats or Bouquets

Umesh is a freelance writer contributing his creative writings on varied subjects in various knowledge and educational sites in internet.

Preface

We all work in our lives for livilihood and other accomplishments. Hard work, focus, determination, and sincere efforts are instrumental in achieving success. Even after doing our best sometimes we do not meet our objectives and do not reach the desired goals. That is sometimes expected as destiny also plays its role in an elusive way.

One important thing which we face during our journey of life is the praises or criticism made by other people on our way of working as well as on our achievements. Some people are greatly affected by these brickbats or Bouquets and start correcting and diverting their paths accordingly but that lands them nowhere.

It would be prudent to hear all good and bad that the critics or other people mention about our work and achievements but should not get biased by that. We must keep focus and concentration in our work as scheduled and if a change or modification is required we have to decide it on our own rather than getting unnecessarily influenced by what others say. This poem is the manifestation of all these ponderings.

Brickbats and bouquets

The tough and elusive journey of life,

Struggling ahead in a slow pace.

Getting failures and successes alike,

In the very competitive race.

When success is there, people applaud us,

We feel happy, satisfied, and elated.

But when failures are there, we are ridiculed,

Feel sad, discouraged, and humiliated.

Criticism by others why having so importance,

And why we should attend to it so seriously.

Is it worth to give that kind of attention to it,

Or simply to ignore it apparently or religiously.

If we are affected by the observations of others,

And change our paths after each criticism.

We would lose our identity and entangle in that maze,

We would lose direction and sink in sadism.

Happy the man who takes criticism positively,

But decides his own path himself prudently.

Applauds or brickbats all of no importance to him,

He knows the ways to move ahead deligentally.

Very important message in the poem. We have to decide what is best for us. Criticisms and applauds should be taken in the right spirit. That way they constructively contribute to our progress.

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on May 15, 2021:

Very good poetry.

We must follow our own path.

No matter how hard it seems we can succeed.

Listen objectively, and decide for ourselves.

Words of wisdom in your well crafted poem.

I agree that we should not get carried away, either by praise, or criticism, and think wisely, about our path ahead.

Thank you for sharing.

I enjoyed your poem. I look at feedback as data points. A trend may encourage change as will a significant outlier or two.

VIDYA D SAGAR on May 15, 2021:

Beautiful poem with a good message , bhattuc. I liked these lines

'Happy the man who takes criticism positively,

But decides his own path himself prudently.

We have to decide our own paths to be happy. Good job.

James C Moore from Joliet, IL on May 15, 2021:

What can you do

or even say

wen it comes to poetry

there will be

critics anyway.

Lorna Lamon on May 15, 2021:

A timeless message in this wonderful poem Umesh. We may not always like criticism, however, sometimes it is necessary in order for us to grow. Praise is only necessary if it is meaningful. I enjoyed this poem - thank you for sharing.

John Hansen from Queensland Australia on May 15, 2021:

Hi Umesh, this is a very important message. As Ravi said, we need to weigh up both the praise and criticism and use our discernment to learn from both. I love the quote of keeping our feathers well-oiled too. Good poem.

Misbah Sheikh from The World of Poets on May 15, 2021:

Ravi Rajan from Mumbai on May 15, 2021:

A great poem with a poignant message. As an individual our objective in life should be to relentlessly pursue towards our goals, irrespective of brickbats or bouquets. Yes bouquets are good and it is good to be appreciated but then real success comes when we treat both criticism and praise in equal measure. Thanks for sharing Umesh.

Liz Westwood from UK on May 15, 2021:

This is a thought-provoking and interesting poem.

Dora Weithers from The Caribbean on May 15, 2021:

Poetry with a profound message. We move forward whether or not the feedback on our performance is positive or negative. Your last verse concludes wisely. Thank you.
