Variety of Farms and Boots Can Be Fun to Learn About for Young Readers

Lisl H. Detlefsen's Farm Boots is a fun read that depicts the variety of farms that are found throughout the country and the variety of boots that can be worn in every season. Farming families grow crops in every season. Farming families also grow crops in greenhouses. There are boots that can be worn in all kinds of weather when moms and dads are working on their farms. Kids and babies also have boots. Farm animals and their babies also come in varieties. There are farm animals to be fed and barn stalls to be cleaned. There are boots for the rain and spring plannting. There are boots for cleaning out the barn stalls. Farm Boots engages young readers with learning about all the tasks to be done on a farm and the boots that are worn for each task.

Renee Kurilla's beautifully colored illustrations are a special part of Farm Boots. The illustrations are done in bright pastels that are very appealing.

The text is written in simple short sentences for beginning readers. Detlefsen also includes a glossary of the types of boots that can be worn on a farm for every season.

Farm Boots was published by Feeding Minds Press in partnership with the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture and is recommended for ages 4-8. It has an ISBN of 978-1-948898-11-9.

Bring Farm Boots Into Your Classroom for Learning Activities About Life on a Farm

Teachers who teach in early childhood classrooms and early elementary grades often include educational activities to learn about farm life and agriculture in our country. Their curriculum features food crops that come from our farms, the kinds of animals that are found on farms, and agricultural concepts about growing food. Most children no longer have the opportunity to actually visit a farm. My experience as a teacher in early childhood classrooms is that if you ask children where our food comes from, they will say that our food comes from the grocery store. Agriculture is a very important part of our culture and learning about agriculture in our country can be important for curriculum. Farm Boots is published by Feeding Minds Press in partnership with the American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture.

*Read Farm Boots in a story time session. Call attention to the variety of boots that can be worn on a farm in all seasons. Bring in a collection of boots for children to classify according to the kind of weather that they are worn in.

*Use the included glossary of boots and engage the children in a discussion of the variety of boots. Invite children to bring in their favorite pair of boots. Make a class graph of the kinds of boots that your students have. Making a graph of boots can be used as a math activity to enhance the reading experience with Farm Boots.

*Call attention to the crops that are grown on farms. Bring in fresh produce from the grocery store that was grown on a farm. Have a tasting party for children to taste fresh produce from the farm.

*Take the opportunity to add learning activities about the four seasons when reading Farm Boots.
