A retelling of the Grimm brothers' fairytale, The Four Brothers is about how a deal with a mermaid led to four magical and immortal brothers and the woman they fell in love with after they rescue her from a Dragon shifter prince.
I wish this story was longer. I love fairytale retellings, even for fairytales I don't know that well. And this one could have been so great because it was already a cool story.
But as good as this story was, it could have been better. At the beginning, there was a lot of summarizing from Addy, the heroine, to get us up to speed, which was a little frustrating. Actually, a lot frustrating. It was two chapters before we even got to the main story. And while retellings are an excellent chance to expand on characters, the author failed to do so.
I kept getting the brothers confused right up until the last chapter. I really would have liked to see more of their time on the ship, right after they rescue her. That is when they get to know each other, and fall in love, but that time is glossed over.
What the story lacked in character development, it tried to make up in sex scenes. Don't get me wrong, I love some good sex scenes, and these were particularly hot. But sex scenes are a poor excuse for a story. What's the use of them when I still have difficulty remembering which brother does what? I could have done with less sex scenes if it meant more character development.
It wasn't a bad story, not really, but because I know it could have been so much better, I'm giving this story 3 out of 5 stars.
