I love reading and writing. I came to writing late in life and discovered a world where I feel like a fish in the water.
Alberto Villoldo, PhD., is the author and writer of the Soul Journeying: Shamanic Tools For Finding Your Destiny and Recovering Your Spirit.
This book was published in 2005 and revised in 2017. Hay House oversaw publishing it and distributing it worldwide.
Alberto Villoldo is a medical anthropologist, a psychologist, and the author of several books and online courses on the various aspects of shamanism and healing. He has travelled widely and studied the healing practices of the Amazon and Inka Shamans as well as from the Shaman Masters all over the world.
The book is divided into three parts with a total of 12 chapters and 186 pages in paperback, but no index.
Part 1 is about Preparing yourself for Soul Retrieval in three chapters.
Part 2 is about The Lower World in five chapters.
Part 3 is about The Upper World in four chapters.
The last chapter —chapter 12— is about growing new bodies inspired another book. In 2019, Hay House published a book for him titled Grow A New Body: How Spirit and Power Plant Nutrients Can Transform Your Health. In this book, he asserts that you can “re-create your body with the building blocks of nature”.
Our destiny is not the same as our future. While the future is what will happen later, destiny is in every instant and we can always make ourselves available to it.
— A. Villoldo
You will find several practical exercises on how to create your sacred space and step outside time and space to let healing happen.
The shamanic concept of time is novel. Learning to travel along the timeline of events is empowering. The difference between soul and spirit is made clear.
You learn how to meet your power animal to use its most powerful feature when you need it in your life.
I recently completed the “Courageous Dreaming” course with Dr. Villoldo where I learned how to carry out the exercises mentioned in this book. This book is a fitting complement to the online course.
The myth of Parsifal in the first few chapters is entertaining and makes for a light and pleasurable reading.
Destiny is saying yes to the calling we’re born with, while fate is what happens when we fight or ignore our calling.
— A. Villoldo
Years ago, I joined a workshop on friendship given by an incredibly old catholic priest. This priest talked about the child in us. The concept of the ‘child within’ stayed with me even though I did not give it much attention nor did I do anything about it. In this book, Villoldo shows the way to uncover the original wound that may have happened to us a long time ago and had disrupted our destiny.
The exercises are not only useful and informative; their poetic language enhances the use of the imagination.
To gain from the knowledge and exercises, the reader would benefit from having an open mind, and being willing to accept notions that differ from conventional western culture.
This is the kind of book that must be read several times with some time in between. With each new reading, the knowledge and exercises can be understood and incorporated at a deeper level.
I found A. Villoldo’s style of writing simple yet powerful; it spoke to my soul. This book gives hope. Having the tools to create healing for myself and others is a powerful and empowering message that is crucial in these days of fear.
I found the Soul Journeying book fascinating and give it two thumbs up. I do practise some of the techniques that I learned from this book and the online course.
